    Imagine seeing a huge creature making a sound loud enough for the entire town to hear, but when you tell your friends and family no one has seen or heard anything. That's just terrifying in itself. How something that should be so noticable is only noticed by you.

    What I also like about his creations is that he doesn't focus on the "horns, sharp nails, pointy teeth" formula of character design. He contorts what we usually see as average proportions of living beings, twisting them to surreal degrees of uncanniness.

    Maybe Siren Head is fascinating because sirens indicate that some disaster or emergency is taking place, and so seeing a creature that is part siren gives us the sense of incoming danger, or a frightening situation.

    • @DeathnoteBB
      @DeathnoteBB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      Yeah I think that’s it. It’s meant to trigger your fight or flight response, imo. The dead body looking body, the emergency siren, it comes together to form a thing that both shouldn’t exist and is telling you so.

      I like it because of the idea. I wouldn't expect to see an alarm siren as an alive creature of all things. Usually scary creatures (or the one I remember most) do resemble some sort of animal or human. But this is different, which is why I like it.

    I feel like the siren head is not used properly honestly. The 'horror' of it comes from how it feels like a part of the environemnt, but at the same time is artificial and shouldnt be real. It should be slow moving, not like the fucking lanky king kong like rigs they use, where it runs and beats you like a bad gmod model. It also doesnt work as a direct thing, because lets face it, a lanky wooden boy bashing you isnt that unsettling, more just direct and blunt. I feel it would work better like long horse, where it was a bad omen of things to come, and plays into the whole siren idea, with how sirens playing due to or right before disaster. You can see this espicially with some sirenhead game mods, where they look and sound fantastic at a distance, thenwhen you get close, its back to janky long thing

    • @Joghurt2499
      @Joghurt2499 4 ปีที่แล้ว +149

      I agree. He'd work better as a side character, just appearing and warning. Make it look like he is the instigator in the beginning but making it more clear that he is only warning the protagonist as the story progresses. It will kill you if you get too close but if you stay at a distance all is dandy.
      I do think that this kind of approac wouldn't work anymore as people already have an image in their head of what he looks like. I HATED the audio from the original clip. That shit is unnerving and creepy to me. But by now it's already lost that appeal and feel.

    • @aviinthepast
      @aviinthepast 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I thought of him more as a lure, something that kills by making people go towards it, be attracted to it. It wouldn't work in a game because you have the power of contextual realism, wherein you know that you have to escape. Also the name "Siren Head" implies to me something along the lines of an Amber Alert, making me think more of a "Crocotta" rather than a typical horror monster

    • @fluidthought42
      @fluidthought42 4 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      I feel this. The character really works well as possibly even a background thing, not something ever directly addressed but just sort of part of the world, a clear sign that something is terribly off, but that the least of your concerns is the 40ft monster that seems to not care about your existence. A sort of Lovecraftian horror vibe instead of "seeing a rabid wolf in the forest at night" sort of response that is easily processed by our monkey brains. It's the rustle of the leaves that's the scariest, not the snarl or show of fangs, since we've long learned to dominate the latter but are still reduced to our base levels, basically no better at the situation than our ancestors, when we notice something wrong and wonder if danger lurks nearby.

    I think the reason why Siren Head is so scary to a lot of people is because of what it represents: the siren. We associate the sound the siren makes as the coming of something dangerous and ominous - usually leading to some sort of tragedy or disaster. This is the fear the Siren Head taps into and that's what makes it both so scary and interesting to us.

      There was also a perfect Siren Head scary short - but I unfortunately can't find it anywhere.
      Lastly I felt compelled to say that anything with such a long lanky figure should definitely be able to run like the wind. Furthermore Siren head is likely incredibly light for its size being that it possesses a near-skeletal frame. This is one instance where the phrase "just skin and bones" can be applied literally! :)

It can be the modernized fear of atomic weapons, where the civil defense siren is the single most horrific invasion of normal life and the natural environment imaginable, one which, on the day it goes after you, it's much faster than you can ever hope to escape. It can be the fear of bots, as it may-or-may-not have the ability to control radios and phones, faking the voices of others in order to hunt down it's target, make them do what it wants so that it can get them. It's an impossibly tall human, body emaciated to the point it blends in with trees and telephone poles, it's head viciously replaced with a piece of technology that represents government, authority, warning (which one can't know to be real or manipulation), and communication. And it's not singular, you can kill as many of them as you want but there might still be more. It's a daylight fear, one that is best used not as a sudden fright, but as something that was always present, something that you watch coming when it charges, completely unable to stop it.
      It's the internet's now, so 99% of what can be found on it is crap, but that 1%, the 0.2%, is horrifying. And I love it.

      @@Mace907 I think its more like; take an Imagine Dragons song, like Believer or Thunder. Objectively they're pretty decent songs. However, they got played over and over and over and over to exhaustion and now everyone hates them.
      Same thing here. Slenderman ain't scary anymore and neither is Sirenhead, both for the exact same reason: oversaturation. We know them, they're everywhere, they're dancing to whatever meme song is hot right now... terror exists in the enigma. To understand a threat is to remove the fear of the threat.
      Wolves were once this horrible monster that prowled the dark... until someone found their pups and realised they were just animals too and now we have dogs. Bears were these massive terrifying beasts of teeth and claws and hunger that could rip a man to shreds... who we now know to be a bunch of goofballs and scared of cats.
      We still have respect for them as predators and threats to ourselves, but we are no longer terrified of them. We know what they are, how they hunt, how they behave when not hunting, how to avoid being hunted or angering them, and how they can be killed if push comes to shove. There is no longer any mystery, thus there is no true terror.
      Well, except for wolves. There are a few videos taken by hikers who got surrounded by wolves. There is terror there. The reason? Wolves never let you see the entire hunting pack. You'll see one dart in front of you, then hear another behind you. You turn and see a glimpse of it disappearing into the brush, only to hear movement from a direction the wolf *didn't* move in. You know you are surrounded. You have no idea how many wolves are around you. The mystery combines with the imminent threat and creates terror.
      How do the hikers react? They're scared alright, but they're also pretty calm. They *know* this behaviour, been informed of what to do if it happens. They know that the wolves aren't hunting them, in truth they are trying to scare the hiker off. The right thing to do is to stop and slowly walk back the way you came. Sure, they're scared, they know one wrong move could see the pack attack them, but really the wolves are far more interested in whatever they were *actually* hunting, usually a deer. They know if they were actually hunting the hiker, the wolves would *never* let themselves been seen. They would just attack and that would be the end of it.
      Hikers know that this behaviour means the wolves are treating you as a *rival* predator, not prey, and are simply trying to look big and tough to scare you away.
      Thus, the terror is gone. There is no more mystery, just facts you can act upon. The more you know, the less fear you have.
      Fear, *terror*, comes from not knowing, from not having a plan.
      As such, we know too much about these creepy pasta monsters and so there is no more fear. We know Sirenhead is slow and cumbersome, hunting by ambush. We know how it lures prey, the sounds it makes and the voices it will mimic. We know it is still an organic creature, vulnerable to bullets and fire. The lore is too comprehensive.
      Furthermore, we see it everywhere. In music clips, memes, even a dating sim. We defeated our fear with humour, a very common thing for humans to do, and thus it holds no terror for us anymore. We see past the shock to the silliness behind it and thus the power it holds over us is gone.
      So yes, in short, a horror monster is indeed scarier the more obscure it is. *That's* *the* *point*

    This makes me realize that Steven King’s stories aren’t as scary as they used to anymore.
    But R.L Stine still has his horror feeling, and also H.P Lovecraft. Despite being dead.
    By my opinion H.P Lovecraft is the best at writing horror stories. He has this imagination like no other, because his creatures aren’t things you would imagine from under your bed, wanting to kill you. Or a monster in the closet or basement that wants to eat you alive. His creatures are out of this world. Literally.
    While, Trevor Henderson’s creatures are Bizarre than how you would expect a monster to be. Trevor’s Monsters fit with the atmosphere and environment they are in. Creating that Nightmare feeling you don’t want to have ever again.

    I think sirenhead blew up so much because it’s extremely memorable. A lot of these other design are all pale, fleshy, unusual proportions, somewhat skeletal... They blend together a little bit, especially with prevalence of already popular creepypasta monsters, critters from the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, and SCPs. Sirenhead is (at least in my experience with horror art) quite unique and I’ve not seen anything else quite like it.
    It’s also a matter of personal preference. I don’t find sirenhead particularly creepy (I also share more of the fascination reaction, like I want to read all about it in a monster encyclopedia) but I find long horse even less scary, especially considering it’s potentially infinite body. 6:12 tbh the creepiness of the creatures itself in like most of those examples makes up for it not being super hidden, i think if everything was hidden itd get old fast, i think the fact that that creature in this case is just RIGHT THERE and heading straight for you adds a lot to the creepiness, which it wouldnt have it it was hidden, also its just impressive to still be creepy even without having to make it super subtle and hidden
