Lovely video! I am wanting to try growing a Japanese Maple in a pot this summer, and it was fun to watch this video of what some of the varieties look like.
japanese maples are generally light feeders. They dont need too much. Fertilizers have three numbers, usually described as up, down and all around. (shown as N-P-K). A fertilizer with a high first number builds stems, trunks and leaves. A fertilizer with a high second number would build roots, flowers and fruits. The third number improves all around plant health. the correct fertilizer really depends upon what you actually want to achieve with your plant.
I want to plant a bed of flowers and a tree for my mom and dad because I wanna tell them how much I love them. But the only trouble is, is that I live in England and its quite cold over here and we have a small garden. Any tips because I wanna get it done this month :)
p l a n e t z o o m I have a selection of Acers planted in my garden and in pots on the patio. They do well in the UK climate and need next to no care. You can get Acer Palmatums from Asda and Morrison’s from £3-£12 depending on size (small)
En casi todos mis diseños de jardines cuando trabaje en Richmond,Virginia inclui un Japanese Maple. porque son espectaculares, especialmente en otoño. mis favoritos, Bloodgood, Coral bark y el Osakazuki.
Very very informative video. I love this plant, unfortunately hare in Pakistan I think it's not available. only Red Mepal(Japanese Mepal) available here. I am very Grateful if you give me more information about this. Thanks Fakhir Zaidi
Hi thank you for your video. I bought an Acer but don't know where shall I plant it. I live in UK. Does it need full sun or part sun part shade and how often do I need to water it. Your reply would be appreciated. Many thanks .
It all depends on your growing zone and microclimate. In the wild, JM is an understory tree, meaning it typically grows beneath or near a larger tree which can provide a little respite from pounding direct sun. They will grow in full sun if you live in an area that doesn't get high 90 or triple degree temps. And they can be made to grow in a hot dry climate if you give it enough water, but that kinda defeats the purpose of a drought-tolerant landscape. For instance, I live in northern California, slightly inland but close to a river which provides a slight marine influence in what tomorrow will be high 90-degree weather and to keep my JM alive I must water it well at minimum once a week and more often to establish. But I think you in the UK would not have much of a problem and it might like full sun as I think your temperatures are more moderate and you get more rain, provided it had shelter from any driving winds or cold. (I'm willing to be corrected by anyone if you think I am wrong.)
help are there any that grow in central florida zone 9b ? regular maples do great here but would love a small variety to replace a crape myrtle i removed that was dead from age
If I wanted to purchase a small Japanese Maple and get it set up in a nice large pot, is there a specific type of soil I should use? And how quickly do these trees grow? I am based out of California, northern part of the central valley.
+Dog lover It's best to use an ericaceous compost, mixed with a little soil based compost and (about 10%) perlite or grit to help with drainage. Acers do not like soggy bottoms!
To make a simple potting mix for ericaceous plants, begin with a base of half peat moss. Mix in 20 percent perlite, 10 percent compost, 10 percent garden soil and 10 percent sand--what acechadwick said.
Hello! Wanted to ask you, to clarify. I found on acer dissectum strange white coating on the reverse side of the sheet in the form of ingrown villi 1 mm., tell me, what is it and how to treat? I treated herbal acaricides, Trichoderma. Sprayed and poured at the root. Nothing helped. But the leaves do not dry, do not twist. A white coating on the reverse side of the sheet in the form of ingrown villi, can only be removed with tweezers, it leaves a mark. A finger or fingernail can't be deleted. What is it?
The tiger one, suppose to look like a tiger or lion when mature, well I found that yours looked like a Chinese lion/ tiger. The ones they use for shows made of paper?
You explain and describe so well that I have surely fallen in love with Japanese Maple -- Thank you so much -- I wish I was at a place which the Japanese Maples grow the best -- I need to do some basic home work I am a Nursery man from from a Place close to Mumbai - India -- Florida type climate --- but now on a short Visit to Canada till the Nov --
Hello Mr. Mullica, These maple plants grows best in Sikkim and Darjeeling has best grown trees nearing 90 to 100 years old or more but not many varieties. I had tried all these varieties of seeds from Sheffield nursery USA., but no luck or maybe the seeds weren't fresh. Can you throw some light on where to buy sapling of these variety, if possible in India.
Hi love your Vlog. I have for many years wanted Acer trees. My Darling Hubs bought me 2. One called Acer llBeni -Maiko they are both in Pots. I have noticed white marks on the leaves. I always water below. I think it could be Powdery Mildtee. . It was planted in a large Pot. I think we my need to pkant it eve in a laeger Pot. Any help would be gteat x
Hi. I was hoping you could give me some advise on what was sold to me as a bloodgood Japanese maple. I live the in Gastonia North Carolina and it 12/10/16 and my tree has lost all its leafs. Is this typical for the winter months or what I should I be doing for her. Thank you
I would be ecstatic if my Acer palmatum trees still held leaves on Dec. 16th! Here in coastal Maine they barely hold into the first days of November. You own a deciduous tree and it is behaving normally. If you want winter leaves get conifers or rhododendrons and mountain laurel.
This spring, after the cold winter in Canada, I just realized that two of my 4 backyard Japanese maple died. A dragon red Japanese maple and a shrimp Japanese maple. Now I’m concerned about the other two. I’ve been watching some videos I some address that the damage can be caused by fungus. If you could help me: How can I know what killed them? In case it is fungus, how can I get rid of it?
Hi there! I'm in Asia and since I don't think my nurseries sell the J.Maple plants at all, would you be able to advise how I can purchase some seeds that will grow true to its parent? I don't suppose there are any sites who will ship the plant to me without costing a newborn child eh? Thanks so much!
J Maple seedlings generally do not grow true to type although they may resemble the parent. For a true match, propagate by grafting, budding or cuttings. To the best of my knowledge, the tree should produce viable seeds.
Seed of any of these trees will not come true. You'll get lovely, worthwhile Japanese maples, but they will not precisely match the tree that produced the seed.
If *Acer palmatum* is suited to your climatic zone, any local nursery should be able to sell you one. Small ones are affordable, unusual ones and larger ones, much less so.
I'm from Himalayan mountain range in India and there is no option available as suggested by you. I want to give a try to see if it can adapt cold weather here . I tried with seeds many times by providing artificial climate condition but nothing happened. I guess problem was with seed.
I have a new Autumn Moon Japanese Maple that has put out several new branches,,,all of which ate wilting.....What should I do????? Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
The leaves are wilting probably due to the heat. To combat this, you would have to water more. Or it could be a drainage issue if you're already watering sufficiently. If you have heavy clay soil, you would need to amend it. JMs don't typically like hot, full sun areas unless there is a larger tree to give a little shade nearby, fog, cooling nights, or a marine influence to mitigate the heat, but those of us who live in high heat areas will still try because we love them so much. Concentrate water on the roots not the trunk. If no luck with this one, look for a more heat tolerant tree that can stand full sun.
Please answer me, ITS VERY IMPORTANT: does Acer Palmatum Osakazuki give fertile seeds? I heard that it doesnt give seeds because flowers aren't fertile, is it true?

Please answer me, ITS VERY IMPORTANT: does Acer Palmatum Osakazuki give fertile seeds?

I suggest you air layer. You have less chance of surviving from seeds.
And takes longer.
Good luck!
