I’ve come to realize that when it comes to fantasy(especially, high and adult fantasy), I actually like it better if the romance is in a background a little bit. Idk if it makes sense, but that way i have something to look forward to with more excitement ya know? Some of my fave high fantasy couples are Vin & Elend from Mistborn, Siri & Susebron from Warbreaker.

I've realized that as much as I love genre books with a strong romance element (like Spinning Silver), I never read straight up Fantasy Romance books. But I suppose others that would fit into this would be the Simon Snow trilogy or the Strange the Dreamer duology for YA, and then Parasol Protectorate series (or the related series by Gail Carriger, which is like Victorian London + supernatural creatures but steampunk) or Kushiel's Legacy (and the related series by Jacqueline Carey, which is like an alternate fantasy history of France featuring a courtesan spy and heavy politics).
And technically it's scifi, but whatever: Winter's Orbit packs a bunch of great tropes into a story that is centered on an arranged marriage.

Oh my god FINNIKIN OF THE ROCK!! I read that book a million times over when I was younger and first getting into fantasy - it made me realize what the genre could do and what an excellent heart-wrenching book feels like. I remember sitting up in bed reading passages over and over again. You're right, it's criminally underrated, I haven't heard anyone talk about it before. This is my sign....it needs an immediate re-read

  • @feylights166

I feel like most fantasy has some element of romance (ymmv). Some have it in the forefront, and others have it more in the background. I wouldn't consider Green Bone saga a fantasy romance story. The romance is very much in the background (mind you, I have only read the first one so far, but I don't think a couple of steamy scenes equal a romance. Great read, nevertheless, and as I said, most fantasy has some element of romance, it's just definitely more in the background in Green Bone--at least so far. Personally, I am hoping Andon finds some love). I read a lot of books with queer romances (either subplot or central), whether it is the main romance, or side romance. I have heard good things about Ember in the Ashes!
If you want epic fantasy with a good romance, check out Nightrunner series by Lynn Flewelling. It's an older series, but I love it. Also check out the YA fantasy trilogy Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kegawa. It's inspired by Japanese mythos, and has both a main and secondary romance.

  • @Walkinjoy

The Tales from Verania by TJ Klune is probably one of the funniest books I've picked up (especially book one: The lightning struck heart). The humor is definitely 18++ so if your looking for clean humor, don't pick this up! Its also got some angsty will they, wont they M/M romance. There are currently 4 books out (technically a completed series) and he recently released some short stories (which I haven't read yet). I just commented this somewhere else, but I cannot get enough of T. Kingfisher’s books set in the world of the Temple of the White Rat! They’re fantasy, but also romance, and are extremely funny and kind while still featuring characters with real depth to them. My favorites are Swordheart and Paladin’s Strength. So if you’re interested in kidnapped nuns who turn into bears, perfumers getting involved in murder mysteries, or tattoos that can eat people, with a side of sweetness and romance, and all within a well-constructed fantasy world, then T. Kingfisher may be for you.

And to see how the relationship evolves cause as we know SJM doesn’t usually keep her heroine with just one love interest. 😩And I love these two together! A Song of Wraiths and Ruin - so happy to see you have this on your list. I don’t think this book has gotten as much love and attention it deserves. I can’t wait to read the final book, A Psalm of Storms and Silence which already came out. I need to continue the Ember in the Ashes series too. I’m trying to read A Discovery of Witches but I read it and put it down after a few pages. I think because not much is happening yet and it’s a little slow. I really want to get into it. I am not sure if I agree with inclusion of it on this list because having just finished Jade City and Jade War (obviously in anticipation of Jade Legacy, CANNOT WAIT) I feel like I could count the romantic scenes within both these books on one hand? Maybe I'm crazy idk, I feel like this series has really well written characters so I feel things when bad things happen to characters but the adjective steamy just does not seem like the correct way to describe the romance in this series. But that's just my opinion, obviously you felt differently but that's all good, we are all allowed our own opinion. Great video as always! :)

Ohmygosh, I'm so glad you mentioned Finnikin of the Rock. This series is SO GOOD. It steals your heart and is just a great autumn read. The second and third books in particular are just perfect. Please please try them if you're looking for an immersive, heartfelt story! I can't recommend it enough.

I would recommend the Glamourist History series by Mary Robinette Kowal--set in the Regency Era, it's a bit like Jane Austen with fantasy :D

I love the romance fantasy trope. The only thing I have an issue with is violence and fowl language but finding clean fantasy romance books is harder to find. If anyone has any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater is a very sweet Fantasy romance with a central romance plot line. It’s a very sweet romance and has no steamy scenes so it seems perfect for you if you want something “clean”! It’s a historical romance set in England where Fae have a land parallel to ours, and involves magic!
