  • Video Tutorial of how to remove and install a steering wheel on an Audi TT Mk2 8J.
    Tools required:
    1 large Ratchet/ Socket Wrench
    1 M12 triple square/ triple point bit
Socket to mate socket wrench to the triple square bit.
1 small pick or any small hook.
1xT25 torx Screwdriver or bit with extension.
A small screw driver as standby.
    1. With the car engine on, turn the steering wheel 90 degrees to each side and remove the cover plugs.
    2. Unscrew the Torx 25 screws holding the airbag in.
    3. Ensure airbag is no longer held in by the screws. Return wheel to the straight ahead position
    4. Remove negative terminal lead from the battery and allow power to discharge from car.
    5. Use the pick to remove the airbag plug from the clockspring and the button plug from the airbag. Place airbag in a safe area.
    6. Remove steering wheel bolt with M12 triple square bit and socket wrench. Do not remove fully, ease steering wheel from side to side to loosen it before pulling it out. Fully unscrew the steering wheel bolt, note down the steering wheel’s position marker and remove steering wheel.
    7. Place new steering wheel on to the steering wheel rack. Ensure it is lined up correctly, if your old steering wheel was not perfectly centered on the steering wheel rack, you can choose to align the new wheel to the old alignment or to the steering wheel alignment mark (but you will need to do a wheel alignment after that). Screw in the steering wheel bolt, (replace with a new one if necessary or put in new loctite blue)
    8. Connect airbag to the button plug (black plug) then connect the airbag plug to the clockspring.
    9. Connect back the negative terminal to the battery.
    10. Test functions of the steering wheel buttons with the engine running
    11. Press in to clip the new airbag into the steering wheel.
    12. Clear all error codes.
Please note that for safety, you should disconnect the negative terminal on your battery and let the car discharge all power before removing the plug of the airbag. Failure to do so may result in the airbag activating.
Do not attempt this installation if you do not have the proper tools or knowhow.
As you are working with potential explosive materials you will need to take all caution, including discharge of static electricity and prevention of any static or current charge.
By undertaking the removal and install of the steering wheel, you assume all liability, and undertake such risk to life, injury, or damage upon yourself.
We disclaim all liability from any injury, loss or damage which may result in your use of this video.

Thank you for this video. Apparently to remove any part of the ignition, the entire steering wheel must be removed in order to do any repairs. Another video mentioned something about taping some part of the clock spring?

I see a wide selection on your website. Will your 8J wheel work on cars sold to the North America market? 2010 TTS specifically. Also stupid question but is the horn functional?

Hello, again. I see you have an "Audi TT MK3 S-Line Steering Wheel and Airbag" for 2016 and up. I also saw that you have a converter. Does that mean it's possible to use the MK3 steering wheel on a MK2 2010 TTS for instance?
Or would I be better off buying "Audi RS Flat Bottom Steering Wheel for Audi TT Mk2 8J"?

@@mightymulatto3000 hi, It is possible but not recommended as the airbag of the Mk3 is only a single stage, whilst MK2 uses dual stage. Also it will require a decoder to be installed and the space in the MK3 wheel is very tight. We do recommend the RS units as the airbags are dual stage and the buttons themselves are programmed to natively work.

pretty sure you forgot to add the two screws back to the back of the wheel to secure the airbag - if it goes off now - it will be useless.

If you have a faulty plug or airbag you can risk it detonating, but the major risk is static electricity to be honest. I’ve removed the airbag plugs without disconnecting the battery on hundreds of cars without issue. But you need to make sure the power is off

    • @modhub3427
      @modhub3427  2 ปีที่แล้ว

That is up to you to decide to do, but out of the hundreds of airbags removed there has never been an issue, usually once the car is turned off, with no live power going to the clockspring there is no power going to surge through. Static electricity on the other hand is the thing you will need to look out for. Ensure you have fully discharged any static current before dealing with the airbag.

@@deanprice3811 we’ve removed hundreds of airbags, and we have swapped hundreds of steering wheels, so I think we know what it is we are doing. Further pointing out a stupid youtube video where the circumstances are odd if not dangerous are circumspect at best. Taking a screwdriver to the front of the airbag where the logo is and levering hard is bound to puncture the weakest part of the airbag cover and go directly to puncturing the charge canister. Also in my detailed instructions in the description, it clearly states to remove the negative terminal from the battery. The main mistake in the video is that I did not remove the key from the ignition. The video was a single take done to explain the process of undoing the screws and bolts of the TT 8J steering wheel and replacing it. Generally speaking, killing the power to the bus would prevent any deployment of the airbag. That would generally be done by simply removing the keys and locking the doors.
