  • In this video, I demonstrate how to loom knit a basketweave scarf. I tell you what you need and take you step by step through the process. This Project consists of two loom knit stitches. The loom knit E-wrap stitch and the loom knit purl stitch are the two stitches. This is a good beginner and fun loom knitting project.
    On this channel,l Wambui shares various crafts and crafting tutorials, emphasizing loom knitting.
    ⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳⤳
    With this pattern, you may not only need a counter but also some kind of physical/visual marker that tells you which pattern/ plan you are doing. It could be putting a safety pin or knitter's marker at the beginning of the rows when you are working on plan B. Or, you might remember to put a sticker on the counter when making a specific pattern so that if you are interrupted, you have a visual marker to let you know which plan/pattern you were working on.

    Sitting here watching this is reminding me of when I was ten-years-old and being taught how to knit by my neighbour, who grew to be like a grandmother to me. I'm tearing up a bit as I'm writing this because she passed away last December. She would have loved loom knitting. She would have enjoyed learning how to from this channel. And she would have loved it if I made this basketweave scarf and showed it her. I can imagine her feeling along the stitches and telling me if they were knit or purl. Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it.

    43 years ago, I needle knit my son a basket weave blanket. I think he still has the blanket. I could not remember how I knitted the blanket. With this tutorial, I can loom knit a basket weave a blanket again. With your lengthy tutorial, this will be one of my next blankets. This is really wonderful to view.

    You explain everything so well and so clearly. I really like that you provide many quick and simple projects. As I Loom knit for two charitable organizations. Therefore I need quick and simple patterns in order to produce more items of warmth. Such as as blankets and warm outer wear. Including house socks. I do enjoy the more complex patterns as well but my passion is to help those in need.

      Hi Linda! Thank you so very much for watching and for the lovely comment. It means a lot to me. Thank you for the DVD order. Your DVD will go out first thing Monday morning! As far as making the stitches tighter, the best thing I can suggest is to go up a yarn weight or loom knit on a loom with a smaller gauge (pegs closer together). This pattern tends to knit loose. Wishing you a great weekend!🧶🌻🧶

Where some have a little frustration is, when being interrupted, trying to remember what row that were on and whether they were knitting or purling. Omg! Is there a big reason why we need to knit-in the tail extra long?, because my yarn is a size 6 so its real thick on a 24-peg loom. I really love your video's!. This past week I actually finished my first scarf! Woo hoo!. Me & my Bo can't believe it 😂😊👍 Now I'm on a roll, making more including 1 for him lol. Thank You! & God Bless...

      @WambuiMadeIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sandra! Thank you for watching. Congratulations on your first finished scarf 🎉. No, you do not have to leave an extra long tail yarn and knit it in if you are working with a really thick yarn. I merely suggested it because if using a thinner yarn or worsted weight, it could save time in the end. However, I believe with a bulky yarn, you are right to weave the tail in at the end to avoid too much bulk. I appreciate the lovely comment comment. All the best to you!!🌻🧶🌻🧶

    Thank you so much for your friendly, patient teaching and your enthusiasm! I have a question about loom gauge size. My beginner set includes looms with large and extra-large gauge looms (spacing between pegs 5/8" and 7/8"). What gauge loom do you use for the basket weave scarf in this video? It seems like a regular gauge or even a small gauge loom would be good to have for some projects. What's your advice?

  • @lindarhudy4725

    Now that I'm started, I have done some research. You may already know this, but loom, or board knitting dates back to the 11th century. The Egyptians started it, and there has been a pair of red knitted socks, in surprisingly good condition. LR

      Greetings! Thank you for watching. I am happy that you like the pattern. I have not done an ‘exact’ yarn usage calculation. However, from working on it, I would say to allow just about a yard more to be safe because of the purl stitches. However, it should be very close to what an e-wrap scarf would take.🌻🧶🌻

      Hi Lisa! Thank you for watching. I am using a 5/8 gauge loom. The yarn is by the Plymouth Yarn Company. Interesting, not much info on the label. They just refer to it as chunky. They do distinguish it from their worsted. However, I would compare the yarn I used to what I normally think of as a 5 weight. It appears to be a 3 ply. I hope this helps. 🌻🧶🌻🧶🌻

    I get a lot of interruptions. Does anyone have any suggestions on a technique for me to remember if I’m in Plan A or Plan B?

    • @WambuiMadeIt
      @WambuiMadeIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Klaudenbach!! I started having the same issue. What I did was put a sticker or rubber band around my counter or on the loom - something that would let me know when I was counting 5 for plan A or plan B. It is going to slow you down a bit. However, you will always know what plan you are on. In other words, whenever you switch plans - in addition to resetting the counter, mark the counter or the loom in a way that says to you, this is plan A - or, this is plan B. That way when you come back from your interruption, you will not only know what number row you are on, but what plan you are on also. I hope this makes sense and that it helps. 🧶🧶🧶🌻🌻

  • @nemkess
    @nemkess 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Miss Wambui, I messed up! I didn't forget how many rows I had, but I had to stop for work and I forgot what direction I was going. I think I guessed wrong when I restarted. (that was row 18, now I'm on row 21) Do you think it'll be okay or should I just start over?

    • @WambuiMadeIt
      @WambuiMadeIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nemkess! I am sorry to hear of your dilemma. It happens to the best of us - especially when working on a project that involves counting and changing the stitch pattern. If you are at row 21, I think it would be best to start over and chalk those original 21 rows up to practice.
      Ok. With this pattern, not only do you need a counter but also some kind of physical / visual marker that tells you which pattern you are doing. It could be something like putting safety pin or knitter marker at the beginning of the rows when you are working plan B. Or, you might remember to put a sticker on the counter when you are doing a certain pattern so that if you are interrupted, you have a visual marker to let you know which plan / pattern you were working.
      I am hoping this will help. I did the same thing myself on one of my scarves. Toward the end, I have on section that has 3 rows instead of 5.
      This scarf works up real pretty and I think you will be happy that you started over. Let me know if you have other questions. I will try my best to help. 🧶🧶🌻🧶🌻

      @@WambuiMadeIt thank you. ^_^. I was pretty sure starting over was going to be my best option, but I'm still new so I wasn't sure. I think a directional marker is going to be a must since I do get interrupted a lot. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi when you say ewrap does that mean knit also n could it be done in any size loom do you by any chance have a written pattern thanx

    • @WambuiMadeIt
      @WambuiMadeIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Brenda! When I say ewrap, I mean knit. There are 3 ways to make a knit stitch in loom knitting. I say ewrap because that is the type of loom knitting stitch that I am using - where the peg is wrapped with the yarn in such a way that it looks like the small cursive letter e before the bottom loop is pulled over.
      This scarf can be done on any size loom that has at least 23 pegs.
      I do plan to write out a pattern. The written pattern will be ready next week. I will comment to you when it is up.
      Theses were great questions - things I need to clarify for others as well.

    Here I am again with yet another question. Have you done a video about waste yarn? I have a pattern that is calling for a waste yarn stitch. I have no idea what this is. I watched some videos and I am confused.

    • @WambuiMadeIt
      @WambuiMadeIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tammy! The only thing I know about waste yarn is when it is referring to a length of yarn that is used to hold knitted stitches until you are ready to use them again. For instance, if you wanted to skip a certain amount of stitches while you knitted around them because you wanted to attach those certain stitches to something else later, you would slide them onto waste yarn - an outside piece of yarn to hold those stitches that you slide or take off the needle. I have never knitted anything where I would need waste yarn. This is my understanding of it. I don’t know if this helps or not. I will look further into it. Enjoy your day - 🌻🌻🧶

      Hi Anne! I am using what was labeled as chunky but felt and looked more like a regular worsted #4 weight. I would recommend a #4 or # 5 weight yarn. I think that if it is to chunky, the scarf will loose it’s ‘flowing’ or flowy’ look and feel.🌻🧶🌻🌻

    What does pearling do? Why do you pearl?

    • @WambuiMadeIt
      @WambuiMadeIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tina! First of all, thank you so very much for being on the channel. In this particular project, purling is what gives the scarf definition and is the stitch that helps give the scarf it’s design.
      In general, the purl stitch is a stitch that when combined with the E wrap stitch keeps our scarves and other projects from rolling up like a sausage. Sometimes when we want to loom knit something that is flat, we need to use at least two different stitches in order to balance the stitches out so that our project doesn’t roll up.
      If you know the E wrap stitch and the Purl stitch, you can pretty much loom knit any project that you want to. If you only know the E wrap stitch, you will be limited in things that you can do.🧶🧶🌻

      Before I had a row counter, I used to take objects like buttons, pennies, paper clips, etc. and I would count them off - for instance: every time I would finish a row I would move one of those objects to a different place or take one of them out of the container and put it aside. I could count those objects to see how many rows I had done. Perhaps this is something you can try until you get a real counter. 🌻🌻🧶
