These Dune videos are always interesting to see. It’s also cool your comment section is open rather than TH-cam closing it for whatever reason. Keep up the great work!
Something that never fails to impress me when I dip back into the well of Dune is how Frank Herbert's Themes echo throughout his books. For example the Missionaria Protectiva uses belief to make a slave of people, in other words using humanity's mechanical nature to control them, which echoes the way men enslaved others through their reliance on thinking machines. The enslavement by your own fears (hence the litany) and later Paul being trapped in his own visions (a robotic deterministic future), the Bene Tleilax attempting to gain control over him through his love of Chani, the tyranny of the God Emperor, the sexual imprinting of the Honored Matres and eventually the 'web' of the evolved face dancers.
Despite all the safety measures, and manipulation. When the manufactured savior finally became a reality. They were powerless. As a Doctor Ian Malcolm once said "life finds a way"
On one hand, one has to be a little impressed by the sophistication of these operations. On the other, I love how Herbert writes all of this in such a way that the events that transpire can test the beliefs of theists and atheists alike. Then there is that gem about the only way to truly understand a process is to be a part of it, not to try and stand apart from it. Here's something interesting you haven't mentioned, but might explore: the Bene Gesserit rely on spice which only comes from Dune and is required to unlock the genetic memories as well as the sight of Paul as the Kwizatz Hadderach. Is it possible that in the special case of Dune, the Missionaria, and the Golden Path and all that follow from them that perhaps the Missionaria and plans of the Bene Gesserit were themselves manipulated by an outside entity to lead to the Golden Path instead of the original intent of the KH? I need to read the rest of the saga, having recently finished Children of Dune, but I am highly suspicious that Paul or Leto II or any human derived the Golden Path. My money is on Shai-Hulud living up to its mythical reputation more than most would ever realize.
Something also worth considering is the concept of ghosts of mind, is the benni Gesserit can use religion to effect culture. Would cultures the benni Gesserit find themselves submerged in not effect them? Ie the the snake swallowing its own tail.
I disagree a little I think. About the Golden path part anyway. I last read the series about a year ago, but when I did, I saw it as Paul perceiving the GP as simply a way for humanity to pull itself out of the technological, cultural, and political rut that it had spent thousands of years digging itself into. It wasn't until Leto II that the plan took on some more details. Leto II had his own genetic programs that he carried out, specifically, trying to create and then spread a 'Null gene' as far and wide into the human population as possible. The 'Null Gene' being a gene that (somehow) made anyone who had it, or their descendants, or the actions of any of the above.....invisible to those who possessed prescience. By so doing, Leto hoped that he could keep humanity from falling back into that trap of always picking the clear and safe path, which 'Leads ever downward into stagnation'.
I’ve always been confused as to how all of these daughters of the rich and powerful learned the skills/techniques of the Bene Gesserit AND seemingly all switched their loyalty to the order. It feels as though none kept their loyalty with their family house or divulged the order of the Bene Gesserit’s goals/plans/techniques to their husbands, their Emperor, or Duke or Baron, etc. It’s always seemed odd that they maintained their secrecy somehow while bringing in new members that already had strong personal family ties and potential divided loyalties. I mean, it’s wild that Jessica seemed to be the first to do something like she did.
It’s been a while since I read the books, but I believe the girls are taken at such a young age they have few memories (like Jedi younglings in Star Wars). I don’t think they even know what house they’re from. I’m almost certain Jessica at least initially didn’t know.
Jessica was trained from birth as a bene gesserit, bonded to Duke Leto as a concubine to produce a daughter, who was to be mated with Feyd Harkonnen to produce the Kwisatz Hadarach - that she loved the Duke and disobeyed the orders from her (ahem) order is a key part of the personification of the love and intimacy (i.e. humanity) of the story. That she still produced the KH is also a very interesting part of the story.
From what I recall of the books, it's been years since my last (re)read, new females are brought into the order very, very young. Arrangements are made with the noble house/family before the girl is even born in some cases. This allows the BG to indoctrinate them quite heavily into their "belief" system. This, along with certain other training methods, ensures the young women have undying loyalty to the BG. Not to mention any sisters who show signs of having divided loyalties are not given the full training nor allowed to have access to the inner circles of the sisterhood. This underlines how much of a betrayal to the sisterhood Lady Jessica's actions were in giving Duke Leto the son he always wanted. Which always bugged me, if Paul's maleness was such a monkey wrench in the BG's plans then why did a Reverend Mother not visit House Atredies soon after Paul was born and "clear the way" for a new, female, heir???
@@earlware4322 I think it was because the Bene Gesserit believed so much in their multi-thousand year plan culminating in the final connection between the two bloodlines (male from Harkonnen, female from Atreides) that they didn't register the male progeny from Jessica/Leto as a direct threat to their plans, just as a rogue Bene Gesserit choices that complicate their plans. They weren't able to foresee the actual Kwisatz Hadarach lineage just as they were unable to peer into the "terrifying place" that a man was able to exist in

The Dune series isn’t the first book that Frank Herbert wrote about artificially created super beings. It isn’t even the second. The Godmakers explored the artificial creation of a psi-focus. A god. Destination: Void explored the creation of an Artificial Intelligence. Which, when woken, had god-like powers. In fact, I’m not even sure how many books Frank Herbert wrote in which he explored this theme.🤓
Rereading the Godmakers right now. Not a profound work by Herbert, like the Dosadi Experiment, or Dune, but fairly light and superbly well written. Enjoyable. Recommended. However, you see the beginnings of the profound implications of mixing theology with politics that are later explored in Dune. Of course, with a twist…Lewis Orne really is a god.
When looking at their serialized publishing, The Godmaker's first short story was published in 1958, while Dune started in 1963. Destination: Void was published until 1965. As full books, Dune was published in 1965, The Godmakers in 1972 and Destination: Void in 1966.

Imagine the breathtaking cynicism a group must have in order to manipulate religion and prophecy as a tool of control a member MIGHT need in future generations. The Bene Gesserit may be the protagonists of the series, but they are NOT the good guys. Indeed, the sisterhood and the other factions spend the remainder of the series trying to adapt and recover from the effects of the missionaria protectiva.

I would be cautious in giving too much credence to the 'religious seeding'. Beliefs change. The situation could of easily turned sideways on Paul and Jessica. A path can be laid, but one still has to walk it.
The missionairia protectiva and the idea of the zensunni wanderers are a huge part of the books..... I think the religious seeding was very important. Jessica used her knowledge of it on the fremen in the first book.

The fool's errand was learning who he was and then trying to reign him in.
I think it should be seen as a sort of transcendental quest to advance the abilities of mankind and the interpretation should also keep in mind the fundamental fear of machines and a new cataclysmic war against them in which the Benefit Gesserit’s messiah would be a clear asset. It’s also worth remembering that the Sisterhood is aware of the problems with the pre-Atreides empire being both unstable (with the competing forces of emperor, Landsraad and Spacing Guild keeping each other in check in a precarious balance) and showing signs of stagnation (no new truly transformative technologies or other inventions have appeared for centuries in the empire). In that sense, the Sisterhood’s plan for a new “messiah society” would also be a way of moving on from a decaying and stagnant empire into a new order, which would also be more resilient, should a new machine or other civilisational threat appear. However, it is also clear that the Sisterhood is not only manipulative, but also holds a very paternalistic, or rather a maternalistic parallel, view of the rest of humanity as people to be steered and controlled, not either listened to, or even really really respected. This conspiratorial, aristocratic and instrumental view of humanity and society is probably the least attractive trait of the Bene Gesserit, because it basically means they consider outsiders as almost subhuman, while seeing themselves in a grandiose and benevolent light that justifies any and all of their actions.
