We always used handkerchiefs for muffling sounds when playing outside, it gives the drum a softer sound. AMK is known for their street playing, they are such an amazing band. Absolutely love them. Henning’s voice is legend.

They have a handful of songs sung in English (my favourite being ‘James’ specifically the live version) but the German ones are sooo good too. 5he handkerchief is there to slightly dull the sound and to prevent the snare from reverberating as much. my dad was a drummer in a band that played in Dallas a lot back from 2011-2016, and he used these things he called "jellies" that did the same thing when he'd play certain songs for his shows. just a heads up: AnnenMayKantereit is a combination of the last names of the band members.
"Annen" - the German "a" is more like the "a" in bar, car, ...
"May" - same as before. This actually sounds like the English "my"
"Kantereit" - again, the "a" in your pronunciation is off. Also the last part "reit" is pronounced like "rite". "ei" in German is "i" sound in English

The handkerchief muffles the tinny sound of the snare. Rounds it out. My brother, a studio musician uses the technique quite a bit.

You may want to check out "Hurra die Welt geht unter" from K.I.Z ft. Henning May.
The official version is on the K.I.Z channel and an acoustic version is on the AMK channel.
The song is in german and also rap.

Just adding real quick to your comment at minute 7:40: the "right guy" is having a acoustic bass. So you're right, he is playing the bass notes, but not on a acoustic guitar, but on a acoustic bass.

AMK is so talented… I’ve seen milky chance and giant rooks in concert, I wonder if AMK will ever tour the America’s

If you haven't already, watch their cover of Can't get you out of my head. As for Roxanne, I've listened to it on 10 different occasions, discovering something new like the 2 distinctive clapping patterns. It was interesting when you pointed out the guitar players towards the end. I will listen again for that.

I Love this and I dig Milky Chance's Clemens Rehbein's music but he really ripped a pigs ear off at 5;43 and his expression a second later just before AMK flows back in was priceless 😆

The handkerchief deadens the reverb response of the snare wires. So you’re right. It lets the drummer have the snare effect without overpowering the sound. A good drummer plays whilst hearing the band. Particularly taking the lead from the bass. In this case a full snare would have been too much for the blues harp. It’s awesome
