- Another two days work on this Cape Dory 25D, including inspection of the Yanmar 1GM's exhaust elbow and concerns about the boat's rudder.
Fire extinguisher install
Rudder / tiller check
Gearbox oil change
Engine oil change
Racor filter change
Exhaust elbow remove and inspect
Anchor rode painted
Raw water filter cleaned
Engine speed checked
Another fantastic video! Thanks for taking us along! And glad to see that ol' 25D is in good hands
Thanks for the video, Owen . . . Great seamanship lesson: When you buy a boat, buy some spare parts. Good for you that you had an exhaust elbow gasket handy!
Gotta love Cape Dory's.
Thanks, you are having too much fun.
Routine boat maintenance that went well. Pretty suprising. Many videos I have watched on this subject have gone horribly wrong 😂😂😂. Well done
Its great to see you getting through your list of jobs Owen. Ive just started a maintenance log myself. Fair winds and following seas from Pittwater Sydney Australia
Good video. I thought you had a 2gm. Now I understand it's a single-cylinder. That's why she thumps at low revs. If the tachometer runs off the alternator, the belt could be worn making the reading on the tacho be off. Check around on the exhaust elbow. The stainless steel ones can sometimes be had cheaper.
What happened to the Alberg 30 you were working on?
My 1gm10 used alot of oil but power was good. I had a hole in the head and was loosing oil through the exhaust. After the rebuild used the motor for 20 hours didn't use any oil.
Thanks for sharing. I plan to remove and work on the 1GM this winter. I'm hoping for a smooth process and no oil loss like yours, after I'm done.
What about practicing your whipping skills and whip around your anchor rode. You could even create stripes with whipping cord to count down each 25 foot section.
Excellent suggestion, Liam! I'll keep that in mind.
Change that exhaust elbow ASAP. If it leaks it is both dangerous because of exhaust carbon monoxide and very expensive because it will spray hot salt mist over everything causing massive corrosion. (I've made quite a bit of money repairing alternators etc because of exhaust leaks)
