      If you mean that no other martial artist has had the influence and impact on promoting martial arts and martial arts movies to the collective world then, yes, I would agree with your statement. If you're talking impact on changing the progression of fighting systems then that's arguable as martial arts probably goes back to the first time one caveman attacked another and many martial artists - many of whom the average weekend warrior martial artist has never heard of - have made major contributions to fighting systems all around the world. Bruce Lee is the most well known strictly by media attention but there were a lot more.
      As big as an influence that Lee had upon me, perhaps you, and many others, I gotta be honest and say that I could name a dozen people alive today from whom I would rather learn pragmatic (practical) martial arts than a 1960's/70's era Bruce Lee because I believe practical fighting systems have come a long way since what even Bruce Lee envisioned because we have much bigger access to martial arts from all over the world.
      If we are talking martial arts philosophy then I think it would have been great to talk to him for hours on the martial arts.

    I was just a young teenager when i first saw Bruce Lee perform that one inch punch, and even THEN i knew it was just a demonstration of how someone could channel their power with little space. It was NEVER about using it during actual combat, and Lee never claimed such a thing.
    Bruce Lee simply wanted to get people's attention to the potential of their inner strength, and how they could maximize it. Too many people are doing a disservice to Bruce Lee by spreading things they don't understand, which makes some people believe Bruce Lee was some sort of fraud.

    I have to disagree with you about the inch punch being a party trick.
    The inch punch was merely used as a tool to demonstrate his ability to generate power from a short distance. It wasn't something he claimed as a punching technique that could be used in an actual fight.
    The first hand form of Wing Chun is Sil Lim Tau. It teaches proper exertion and release of energy through the arms while striking, rooting and centering of body weight, and the sixteen major hand techniques. Consistent practice of this form develops internal energy and also develop a strong root to prepare for the advance level of training.
    YEE JEE KIM YEUNG MA conditions the legs, and is the foundation for the concept of "rooting," or generating power from the ground up.
    Bruce merely used the inch punch to demonstrate the power one can generate by mastering rooting.
    The inch punch isn't "a party trick" at all.

    • @trondyne3513
      @trondyne3513 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just to be clear... Whatever the mechanics of the strike I think a short distance, say a few inches from the target can certainly be "used in a fight"...and I think this was the intent of Bruce's demo to get people seeing that, which especially then was something less commonly discussed. To me DK is a grifter.

    • @teddyjr.424
      @teddyjr.424 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@trondyne3513
      I'm not saying it can't be used in a fight. I'm just sharing information I've learned from my research when I sought to find out more about the one inch punch and how one can learn to execute it.
      In an interview with Dan Inosanto, he mentioned that Bruce Lee used it solely to exhibit his ability to generate power in close quarters. Dan said Bruce never talked about it as an actual tool for fighting.
      This was also mentioned in the latest Bruce Lee biography by Matthew Polly "Bruce Lee A Life".

    • @johnhan1205
      @johnhan1205 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A real, "one inch punch" is not necessarily "punching" at all. It's as you say. It's power. A Wing Chun master can deliver remarkable power from any part of their body from a short distance. Many people would like to be called "master". But I've only met one such master in my life as I believe a true Wing Chun master is extremely few and far between... as in only a handful in the world.
      The master who I met and had the privilege to train under for four years could tap me with, say, a bong sau, a tan sau, a knee, a knuckle, and send me either flying across the room in the air, (I only weigh 150lbs), or with a charlie horse (using the knee) like no one else I've ever met. He did not have to settle into a stance first the way Bruce Lee does in the famous archival film. He could do it from any standing position and with hardly any movement. As for me, I'm no where near the level of my teacher. I've also met quite a few good Wing Chun people who are strong and in good shape, but no one who could demonstrate power like my teacher. Not even close. I practice for health and basic self defense. But this kind of thing, I would think, takes commitment like that of a disciple.

    • @assoverteakettle
      @assoverteakettle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll give you that the 1 inch punch is a demonstration of the underlying whipping/snapping motion of wing chun and I'm sorry that you take the term "party trick" as a pejorative but it IS a party trick in that it's meant more for demo purposes than for practicality. It's something that is designed to impress viewers with some feats of strength or skill in a very static way but in itself is impractical for purposes that it is either trying to convey or imply to the audience. Like a magician's sleight of hand. The unbendable arm in aikido is another party trick, as are board breaking demonstrations.
      The problem with the one inch punch demo is like the ol' "Boards don't hit back" argument made by you-know-who. It is very unrealistic in its set up. The one inch punch demo typically requires the demonstration partner to stand upright, feet shoulder width apart, and holding a pad or telephone book to absorb the punch. Well, anyone who does martial arts knows that standing with your feet parallel is very unstable stance -- fore and aft. It is similar to how faith healers knock over their subjects by compromising their posture.
      Then it took Bruce Lee in his filmed demo, and DK Yoo, and anyone else attempting to demonstrate the one inch punch a good five seconds to set up by squaring up with the partner, cocking the fist, rooting their weight on their back leg... It's a static demo.
      Is it totally useless? I don't think so. I'm sure it does have practical applications in law enforcement or working security.
      I was watching an interview with a U.S. game warden on TV one time and he demonstrated to a trainee how to use non-lethal force on an aggressor getting in your space. He placed his palm by the trainee's chest with a relaxed arm and then he snapped his palm against the chest putting his weight behind him and knocked the demonstration partner back a few feet. A-ha. A one inch palm.

    • @GoldenbellTraining
      @GoldenbellTraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      What Bruce Lee and DK Yoo are demonstrating is a party trick.

    DK is pretty good with what he does in his dept., but doesn't come close to Bruce in any way. Besides, DK studied the bogus style of Systema which was popularized in Russia. Systema is a sort of tai chi style of movement with strikes and takedowns.

    I'm assuming your labelling of Wang Xiang Zhai as a "Street Thug" was for click bait purposes? He did lament the state of the Chinese martial arts "standards" not the arts themselves. He did face challenges and even sought some out but this is not uncommon in Chinese martial arts culture. Like so many stories of fighters in China throughout their history - the stories are pretty much the same just fill in a different name- he fought all who came and defeated them. Wang Xiang Zhai, I believe was Guo Yun Shen's Nephew, He trained with GYS for about 5 years before GYS died when WXZ was about 15 years old (ish). However GYS wanted WXZ to take the art forward as his successor though there were undoubtedly other students of GYS that would have been far more capable and further trained than WXZ. It's a little simplistic to say that he travelled around china challenging people, life in China wasn't so simple at that time (1st and 2nd Sino-Japanese wars).
    Gou Yun Shen was imprisoned for killing an opponent because the Judge felt as a skilled martial artist he should have been able to defeat the opponent without killing him - this is a matter of record. In prison he was said to have practiced Beng quan/ crushing fist up and down in his cell daily for hours which made him even more formidable. The standing postures you discuss (Zhan Zhuang - Pronounced JamJong) is a solid aspect of Xing Yi and I suspect internal alchemy by Taoists/ Chinese Shamen for centuries. Guo did not discover these he merely passed them on like many before and after him. Perhaps this might be useful: podtail.com/en/podcast/heretics-by-woven-energy/-66-yiquan/
    To me your comment regarding Bruce Lee's quote on stillness - sounds like it comes from the Tao Te Ching.
    as for DK Yoo - "shrugs".

    I went to a Yiquan seminar a few years ago and I must say that it is a very underrated Martial Art. I love how there are no forms in Yiquan but instead training practices based on developing power and a deeper mind, body connection but to make it more effective for modern times, Someone who truly knows and loves the art will have to cross train in MMA. Once that person does that they will be able take Yiquan to another and modify its techniques in ways that would confuse most MMA plus Street Fighters.

There are other things you will recognize that are attributed to Bruce. This doesn't take away from Bruce, but it is clear he learned and taught but people, not knowing, thought Bruce was genius for coming up with these ideas. Study and apply. Just like all those adds that used to be in the back of comic books advertising for "karate" and "judo" making it seem all you had to do was learn the techniques and you would be whoopin' some azz. You could learn all the moves to a "t" but if you suck at applying them then "style" means nothing. The thing is not that you have all the moves and techniques down but how you actually apply them. 😟

Of course that's up to you....and why do you call Bruce's boxing win "lack luster"? At least Bruce actually won his match...and later was much more active in sparring and interested in actual fighting.... Bruce created JKD because Ip refused his request to finish his training and because he needed a way to move ahead of his Sihings without that training.

    I feel like I'm getting to know the real Bruce Lee more, thanks. As a past martial arts instructor it's easy to see how Bruce gavitated and befriended other martial artists. Also, it's clear there are 'demos' to showcase martial arts for commercial reasons, and then there's real fighting skills. I think reason for Musashi's success (swordsman) was because he went around challenging what were martial schools based on hierarchy and status, not based on skill or toughness. Of course Bruce Lee was an athlete and an actor, and wasn't a fighter (competitive fighter). Also, I think it's always a big mistake to confuse self defense and competitive fighting. In the end, though I'm not a fan of JKD, I think an attacker would rather face a petite woman with no training, than one that is highly trained in JKD and has the confidence to land alot of punches... even if she can't beat Mike Tyson in a boxing match.

    To say that an INCH PUNCH has no power, and is merely a Party Trick... is Very misleading. Ive personally developed the ability to easily KO any fighter, with less than 3" of travel. Which again, goes against your characterization, that fast Wing Chun punches, have no real power. Either you really dont know.. OR.. you simply are not defining things properly.
    What Lee showed was mostly an Explosive PUSH, with the handshape of a Fist. Everyone knows, that the difference between a punch and a push, is that a push is momentum based... and a punch in IMPACT based. However, there can be a whole range in-between these two. A boxers punch, has some Impact.. but it also has some drilling PUSH as well.
    Lee tended to keep his demos as far skewed to momentum, as possible. Since power isnt visibly seen.. this type of demo appeals to the largely ignorant masses, whom thing that Massive power is when you see an OP flying several feet backwards, after getting hit. That said... Lee could and sometimes DID, use some actual Fajing (explosive power IMPACT). There is a report of one of his students asking Lee not to do the inch punch demo on him.. because his chest was in so much burning pain, that he had to call in sick from work the next day. That kind of pain, doesnt come from a typical "Push". Thats true Internal Power applied with some mid-level of Impact.
    Lee eventually developed true explosive inch impact power, and he only showed this to two of his students. One of those students was James DeMile. James said that Lee didnt want to be responsible for releasing that kind of knowledge to the general public. However, after Lee passed, DeMile said that he didnt thing it was that big of a deal, in the modern age of the Gun... and so he decided to reveal the actual technology. He published a book titled something like "Bruce Lee's 1, 2 and 3 inch power punches". The book is fairly small, and is only a handful of pages. In fact, I only recently found a video he made, related to the book, on youtube.
    I skimmed the book long after I had developed Fajing on my own (partially by Hints from Lees other books). From my brief skimming... I personally found the descriptions confusing and lacking, to the point where someone might not be able to get to the proper end result. That said.. if you are training for short range impact power.. eventually you start to figure out things over time... merely by comparison of the developed results. The main thing is, the sheer amount of effort that it will take, before one achieves any level of notable power, using this method. Most people would likely give up after a short period of time... well before they actually acquired the actual high level ability.
    As for WC... Wing Chun teaches the basic principle of how Fajing is executed, within its punches. HOWEVER... it is never really stressed in the teaching and training, in how to reach high levels of short range impact power. That comes down to a level of effort, that most WC practitioners, never spend the time and energy, developing. As such, their rabbit punches, are in fact... often very weak / pathetic. Many of them might be able to KO from a full 12 inches worth of space... but anything closer than that... and they would find it next to impossible to KO an OP... let alone, worse.
    While Fajing isnt really able to be SEEN with the eye... as its executed in a fraction of a second worth of time... You can see the video on youtube: "Glen Levy fajing hammerfist" Glen has two videos, where he demos the real IMPACT version of Fajing, on two different mens chests. The results are VERY different from Lee's push demos. These men drop instantly to the floor, in agonizing pains... rather than flying +8 feet backwards. The larger male, was barely able to breath... and it took quite a bit of time, before he was able to return to his feet. Glen greatly limited the amount of Fajing energy he released into them. That said... Glen was Far weaker with Fajing abilities, that myself. Glen needed a half circle runway, which would equate to something like 6 to 8 inches of actual travel. Where as I could produce double the power, with a much closer straight line strike. I also had weighed less than him, at time when I was at my peak, and had KO'd four different martial aritsts, with Vertical fist fajing hits to their foreheads.
    Also, a common ignorance about Wing Chun, is the idea that you should need more than two consecutive hits on an OP. I never needed more than ONE hit on an OP... and that was with a punch that moved less than 6" of travel, and I never used more than about 15% power levels to cause a KO. At that time, I was only 160 lbs, at 6ft tall (mostly skin and bones). Rolling fist, is not really designed as a main attack. Its mostly to teach the concept of Hand Replacement. The ability to transition from one hand tech, immediately to the other, without pauses / slowdown. The reality is that you should be able to END any OP, with a single WC strike. If you cant... then you have not trained your strikes to anywhere near their full potentials.
    The ONLY time I used even TWO consecutive WC punches in a row... was If I used the first one as a setup. Where as the first punch was a hair faster, and designed to cause the OPs head to be partially "rung" ...followed by the 2nd hit, which was where Id connect much more of my body mass into it. That said, I still never needed to use more than a single hit.. and never at full potentials. The difference in speed between a full mass strike, and a very mild quick strike, is still less than half a second. Maybe a quarter second, to a third of a second.. of difference. Barely enough for it to even matter. Especially since you should have long since disabled the OPs defenses before launching the strike anyway.

      I like your comment. I had the privilege to train under a Wing Chun master for four years in the early 2000s. He could tap me with pretty much what seemed like any part of his body - bong, fook, tan, knee, knuckle. I'd either go flying about 10-15 feet or feel pain that by conventional thinking shouldn't happen from such a seemingly light tap and from such a small guy. He was not muscular but his bones were stronger than anyone that I personally had ever met before. And he was in his mid 60s at the time. When you talk about using just 15% of your power, I know what you're talking about. My teacher would say things like "that's only 1% of my power". I had the luxury of feeling and experiencing for myself what he was talking about and not just watching it on a video and then deciding if I believed it.
      When you say most Wing Chun practitioners give up before developing this kind of power I would have to agree. Unfortunately, this applies to me too. But this is what I've observed in the world of Wing Chun. I didn't actually give up, as I still practice regularly. But it's pretty much for health and basic self defense and at that level it works great. But to reach my teachers level, and the level you're talking about... that requires disciple like commitment. There's lots of bad Wing Chun out there.

      Ha! I just watched your link to "Glen Levy fajing hammerfist" This is similar to what my teacher would do and the student's reaction. The only difference is this Glen Levy guy is a young man and my teacher is now in his 80s and can still do these things.

    • @johndough8115
      @johndough8115 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnhan1205 If you flew backwards, then he greatly reduced the impact power, and used more push power. That, and or, you had a very poor level of "Grounding".
      I met one of the very few JKD guys that actually knew the Real deal. His inch punch to my chest, didnt move me more than a half step back... and that was only because the pain was so bad, that I lost all ability to maintain focus. Felt like a cannon ball the size of a basketball, hit my chest. The pain was as if someone poured gasoline on my chest, and lit it on fire... and the burning pains lasted for FOUR HOURS long. When he hit me, I felt a shockwave of force rocket through my body.. and I felt the impact hit the inside front fact of my SPINE. My spine was forced outwards, causing my entire body to bow... and for the first moment in my entire career, I was TERRIFIED.. as it felt like my spine was going to break out of my back / crack in half... and there was literally Nothing I could do about it.
      Fajing is not just applied to a strike... as you noted. I once used a very mild Jut Sao (downward deflection), and it nearly shattered an MMA fighters wristbone. I used less than 10% on that one... but, the MMA fighter decided to use full power, full speed... (against our agreed upon Medium safe levels) and it vastly amplified the impact power potentials. Within about an hours time... his injury swelled up nearly double in size.
      As for Self Defense... the problem with Casual type of training.. is that your level of development will be far more likely to Fail, under actual combat conditions. For example.. if you never developed KO power in your punch... and the OP managed to get almost to Grapple distance... and you punched him... he might simply just chuckle, as it didnt really effect him.
      But even before that point... simply things like hand deflections may also easily fail, due to being sloppy, and applied improperly. This happens due to both flaws in the techs, as well as not having hardcore sparring experience. This is why most WC practitioners tend to look like sloppy kickboxers when they TRY to spar. They never can maintain traditional form, under combat pressure. And it only seems to get worse, when the WC practitioner is put against a much larder and stronger OP. While in THEORY, the art is designed for such challenges... but in sparring matches.. such WC practitioners tend to be destroyed by very low level artists, that are the same mass and strength... let alone, much greater size, mass, and strength.
      Then you have issues with the fact that almost no WC practitioners do full body Iron-Body conditioning... so even a very mild level hit, is too painful, and too damaging... and they end up curling into the fetal position.
      I used to train for actual combat, which is what "Self Defense" actually means.
      I used to train 7 days a week, in and outside of the class. I cross trained in other arts, to best understand them. I did full iron body conditioning. I sparred after the first year... against other artists from various arts (every weekend). I used to spar fighters that were up to, or over 2x my own mass and strength, regularly. When I first started sparring... I was completely destroyed, and all of my techs fell apart. However... after quite a lot more Mastery, as well as the experience.. I was finally able to maintain proper form under heavy contact sparring matches. I also because virtually untouchable to typical sportized arts fighters.
      This is not to brag. Its simply to say what is possible, when you actually train with full combat level Mastery, as your goal.
      And that, as much as many WC students want to BELIEVE they are good enough for "Self Defense"... most of such people would get dropped by an untrained drunken thug, at the local pub, with fair ease, and lightning speed.
      These actual combat level experiences are VERY different from the mild and often unrealistic DRILLS that are used in WC training. While the drills do have a valid use and purpose... they are not a total replacement for actual hardcore sparring / combat experience. Both are needed. (Which is how things USED to be, back in the Ancient days of China)
      Anyways, hope this information helps. Its not what most people want to hear... and the fact is that most people will never even need combat abilities their entire life.. but this is the reality of what it takes to be capable of repeatable, safe, combat level abilities.

    Jackie Chan became a star getting away from the image of Bruce Lee. As much as I understood Bruce Lee's teachings from his writing, he said anyone needs to be him or herself, we won't get the most out of ourselves imitating blindly anyone else. Best thing he could do is getting away from that Bruce Lee image. He has become the messiah of a twisted religion.

    Now I’m just expressing myself and nothing personal. But all of the so called Bruce Lee fans or fanatics are people who recognize that nobody comes close to Bruce and that’s a fact. So their not hanging onto their hero and pretending that he was superman but recognizing how incredible he was. And Beerdy seems to think that he needs to make up stories to get more views or to make Bruce look better but he doesn’t have to. You show me someone that’s better then Bruce and I’ll buy everything on the guy. You don’t realize how good Bruce was. Quicker then a blink of an eye he could take his fingers and punksure your stomach and that’s the end of it. That’s just one choice in case he needs it.

    Why bother comparing? Why can he be himself? No one can be compared to Bruce Lee ever anyway. Just the name Bruce Lee people already have wild imagination about his martial style, his charisma, his appearance etc...whatever one can think of the great fighter, actor, teacher, leader etc

      I think a more fair match up would be against a contemporary like Masatsu Oyama, Helio Gracie or Benny Urquidez. Modern cage fighting involves a level of athleticism and well roundness that I'm not sure Bruce can match, especially when considering that his career kept him from reaching the level necessary for professional fighting. We also have to consider that, since Bruce's JKD was a work in progress, it's possible that many of the strategies he developed would not fare well in a modern mixed martial arts fight.

      You say Bruce Lee was not a fighter. That's true, in the sense that he didn't participate in competition fighting.
      Does this also mean that you believe that HE WASN'T GOOD AT FIGHTING?
