It was originally played on a fretless. That's the difference in sound you hear on the original. The further away you play from the bridge the ofter the tone - which was the right move on a fretted bass in this case.
@@theartsbandit Fretless basses generally have a very particular type of sound. That opening bass riff on the recording sounds very much like a cello. They even take a cello away from the cellist in the start of the video and she pretends to keep playing it lol.
