Wonderful song and brings back emotional memories for me and my family. As we left Wellington harbour in 1967 for a 6 week voyage to England, family and friends of all those on board sang this song. Still brings a lump to my throat!!
What a beautifully natural soprano voice, This song really belongs to the people of New Zealand and Hayley made them proud on this occasion. Even if the song derived from a Swiss Cradle Song it has become synonymous with the people of New Zealand No pretentious vocal gymnastics to take it away from the ordinary good people of New Zealand - Thank You Hayley - You did your country proud. You are a great ambassador for your country.
A very special moment from the perfect pitch lady Haley and we in Ireland enjoyed such a perfect rendetion. thanks to RTE for sharing it with the world, we are thinking of you all in Christchurch
legend has it that the tune (melody) is from an Australian song called "Swiss Cradle Song", The Lyrics were written for the Maori soldiers going off to fight in WWI. It refers to the men's families who stayed behind. Now Is The Hour , also known as Po Atarau, has become synonymous in NZ with saying Goodbye, particulary to family members travelling overseas for long times (i.e. their O.E.), and is also poignant to be heard on ANZAC day (as a war song)
@adriann1989 Thanks man. I am in Edinburgh, and there are a lot of Poles here. Great people! Very humble and modest - just like Kiwis, I guess - intelligent also (don't know if that applies to is). :)

She's got such a great voice. Thanks RTE for not 'talking away' the song.

I'm not ashamed to say that I cried a little on this day, after waiting so many years as an All Black fan for them to win. Words cant describe the joy
Truly an amazing performance! Loved it!
Yes, well done Tom McGurk and the crew at RTE for allowing this lovely performance to add to the occasion.

What a voice..
beautiful voice and thank you for the Maori lyrics Hayley xx
Not only did ITV cut to an advert during this, they did the same to the French captain when he was being interviewed.
Love the start of this with the commentator desperatly trying to tell the other to politely shut up, and still wouldn't.
I love Hayley, and u just cant't talk when she sings - come again who ever u a when she sings...

haha that last commentator just had to get his 2 cents in.
"the gap between the hemisphere is exaggerated" -only in world cups. Between world cups, southern hemispheres teams walk all over the North
@marcellin20a so true, the guy hasn't done his research to back that comment up.
