I don't think it's ever explained why Raymond is treated like as the favorite. He's not that great of a guy. He's so self-centered. He'd rather watch tv or play golf than spend time with his kids. Heck, he just wants sex from Debra but expects her to cook and clean, like a mother.

He’s also an passive-aggressive sociopath (or at least a narcissist) who uses a 'pity seeking' or 'needy' persona to manipulate his wife by playing the victim - he also regularly lies to her and manipulates her to get his way (ex. purposely tries to make her angry because he finds her more passionate in bed).

Ray is *his mother's favorite.* Since Marie is a master manipulator, she makes Frank sometimes like him more and made Robert to dislike him more throughout their childhood. But the ironic truth is that *not* everybody loves Raymond: he's constantly fighting with Debra because of his emotional stupidity, Frank has a healthier relationship with Robert than Raymond and, obviously, Ray is the introvert, often insecure man that he is because of his mother "love", or patronage.
