    I love hearing your unbiased opinions on different varieties of foods. I have learned so much! Could you do reviews on more of the science diet vatieties? Like for LB Puppy and LB Adult. I loved the reviews you did on reg puppy and healthy weight but would love to see more. From what I can tell they seem high on Fat would love your opinion on that.

    Hi there! I'm a pre vet kid who's taken a real interest in pet nutrition as of late. I decided I wanted to incorporate some fresh food in my small maltese mix Bentley's diet, and went with JustFoodForDogs to help me do that. I feed him two brands of heavily supported brands of kibble (Hills science sensitive stomach lamb & rice kibble and purina pro plan sensitive stomach salmon & [grain i cant remember the name of right now haha] kibble) as a base (I use multiple types with multiple proteins because he used to have a very sensitive stomach, and exposing him to many food types has worked miracles for it), and typically add some of the JFFD shelf stable diet (again, I use a variety of their flavors and change the flavor to a new one as i use up the previous box). I do take the time to properly measure out how much of each (kibble & JFFD) I should give to provide Bentley with the proper nutrients he needs. However, I recently found some contradictory information that is making me rethink my decision, stating that combining diets isn't the best idea for the sake of vitamin deficiencies and such. Is this true? Should I perhaps instead have set days during the week where Bentley gets a fresh food meal and days where he gets his kibble?

      Changing diets is not recommend for several reasons including the introduction of allergens and priming the body for food allergy as well as increasing the likelihood of pancreatitis. Not to mention it encourages “picky eater” syndrome. Just pick one diet that is properly balanced and stick with it. Too many people overthink it and it really is that simple.

    For those considering feeding JFFD, I recommend the turkey and macaroni recipe (not featured in this video). It's not grain-free, is for maintenance, and probably has the most optimal nutrient levels of all their recipes. (It also happens to be a bit cheaper than the other recipes!) My dog, who has had digestive issues on kibble, does fantastic on this food. :) Also, their customer service is very knowledgeable and helpful.

      @@AnimalDocRea I had to ask for it, but they quickly sent me a chart just like the ones you reviewed. Here are some of the dry matter numbers and the AAFCO statement:
      Fresh frozen:
      Protein: 34.0 %
      Fat: 14.9 %
      Crude Fiber: 1.2 %
      Calcium: 0.68 %
      Phosphorus: 0.58 %
      Sodium: 0.26 %
      Vitamin E: 154 IU/kg
      Pantry fresh:
      Protein: 36 %
      Fat: 12 %
      Calcium: 1.2 %
      Phosphorus: 0.9 %
      Sodium: 0.10 %
      Feeding trials using AAFCO procedures substantiate that the JustFoodForDogs’ Turkey & Whole Wheat Macaroni Recipe provides complete and balanced nutrition for maintenance.

      @starnaito nice! Are those dry matter? And what is the ME?

    • @starnaito

      @@AnimalDocRea Yep, those are the dry matter numbers. And it’s 49 kcal/oz with 7 oz recommended for a 20-lb dog.

    Dr. Rea is there a myth surrounding feeding a moisture rich feline diet? Many people think a moisture rich diet will delay kidney disease in cats. But im wondering, is there any science behind that? I am just curious as there are many people in the feline nutrition space who say cats should only have wet food to prevent kidney disease. But if you’re feeding a wet food diet high in phosphorus and calcium wouldn’t that be counterproductive compared to let’s say feeding a dry food with the appropriate nutrient levels. I’m just curious? As a cat owner there’s always so much debate around this.

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The current model is that canned is best, but I would say not if it’s not nutritionally unbalanced. So if I had a canned diet that was excess in minerals vs a dry that was not, I’d feed the dry and supplement water by either moistening the dry, doing nutrient enriched water, or enticing with a fountain ect. Ideally of course we’d find a can that falls in the range we are looking for. Then of course there is the matter of whether the cat will eat it or not.

      @@AshleyKarysI’ve never thought to say it that way but I agree with Dr Rea. A dry food with optimal nutrient levels would be much better than a wet food with excessive levels. The proof of that is the success of dry renal diets with cats… fort years.

      I’m not sure I have it anymore, I found it on the website. I think I had to clinic the veterinarian tab. I’ll check my PC though in case I have it book marked.

      I have emailed them many times with no reply. I can’t do a review without the nutrients on a dry matter basis. If you can get them for me I’d be happy to do the review.

    Can you compare Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Salmon Sensitive Skin and Stomach and Hills Large Breed Sensitive skin and Stomach. I know PPP includes joint supplements and Hills does not in their formula. Do you think that should be a determining factor when picking a food for a giant (have a 130 pound Rottie) my vet is recommending a sensitive skin and stomach due to chronic loose stool (no health reason) this is a last step before RX diet. Said either brand is fine. We have to do a LB kibble just for the larger kibble. Otherwise it’s not clear why one would be better than the other😢. He currently eats RC breed specific and thinking it may have too much fat or something

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’d go with your vets recommendation as the medical condition supersedes any other concerns

      @@AnimalDocReathanks, I agree except he said either brand is fine to try. Then you look at them and there’s no way to know which one is better than the other. I guess a process of elimination at this point😊 I can tell that my vet stays away from recommended a specific brand, just sticks with recommending all the reputable ones

    Does this food need the calculation to find the ‘new’ appropriate levels of nutrition? If it is 44kcal/oz, ~35oz/kg, so kcal/kg would be 44x35=1,540 kcal/kg, correct? Or is this all out the window because the information was given on a dry matter basis and they already did every calculation that would need done?
    SECONDLY, if a food is low/lacking in vitamin e (seems like that’s the pattern in a lot of foods), would a supplement be something that could be included to boost that?

    Very good video. Cat People! Sounds like a 50s horror film! LOL The cat food is rather expensive. Your first order is 50% off, but have to sign up for auto ship. 🎶 “I'm flat broke but I don't care; I strut right by with my tail in the air. . .get my dinner from a garbage can!” 🎶 - Brian Setzer. From the website: "Rather than simply adhering to the Association of American Feed Control Official's (AAFCO) bare minimum for testing, which requires only four blood parameters be tested over six months in just six dogs, we tested the recipes over the course of a year, looking at complete blood counts (CBC) and full internal organ chemistry (CHEM) panels in a total of 30 adult dogs."

    • @AnimalDocRea
      @AnimalDocRea  หลายเดือนก่อน

      A am not sure of the specific requirements of AAFCO to get a feeding trial label claim, but that statement is a half truth. It’s actually 8 dogs that must start the trial but only 6 are required to “finish” the trial. So there is some funny math going on I’m sure. And yes 4 parameters for labs.
