1993 Vauxhall Carlton Estate Road Test & Review - Matty's Cars

  • Over 30 years on from it's launch the Vauxhall Carlton could still give most new estates a run for their money when it comes to the space race. Not a single part of the design compromises on practicality, and isn't that the point?

    Oh man, my dad had a Carlton Diplomat 2.6. The straight six engine and auto gearbox delivered smooth power, it had a sports button on top of the shifter which dropped the rev range for faster gear changes. It was a dark red metallic which a brown leather interior. The thing was an aircraft carrier. The legroom in the back was immense. I remember when he brought it home for the first time, the owner of the garage where he bought it has smoked a cigar in it the day before and that smell coupled with the hot leather interior lingered for weeks. It was bliss.
    I really miss that car. That's why now, at 31, I still admire Carlton's. The Lotus Carlton is on my lottery win wishlist.

      Amazing story. Glad this video brought back memories for you. The cigar thing reminded me of my grandad's Mk6 escort. For years I wondered what the amazing smelling air freshener was that he used in his car. Turned out it was stale tobacco 😂

    Great video Matty!.. I've had two of these in the past!.. A 2 Litre CDi auto on an F plate, which served me well in my TV repair business!.. Later on I had a 2 Litre manual on an L plate which developed a strange symptom like a can of Coke rolling around under the back seat when cornering!.. I eventually got underneath to find the centre bearing on the split propshaft had parted company from it's rubber surround, and the whole thing was flapping around dangerously! ... Anyway, they were good solid workhorses! :D

    Superb car and review I enjoyed it. A friend of mine owned one in the nineties, superb travel and packing car if where not a badge snob. Build quality wise it was not on par with Volvo or Mercedes, but it was a lot of bang for the buck. In that time I drove a Citroën XM break which was a real spaceship (one with lots of troubles) but what a great comfort. What i don not understand is the bashing on now days SUV's. The car I drive now Is a Citroën C5 Aircross and it gives the space and the practicality of those big nineties estate cars.

    • @MattysCars
      @MattysCars  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was a great car to review. I don't think the demand for this type of car is there though now we have become such badge snobs. I mean not all suvs are necessarily bad but they're just not my cup of tea. I prefer an estate

    • @64bakes
      @64bakes 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think in most cases, estates do actually offer more load space and overall practicality compared to SUVs. An SUV mostly just offers a bigger feel and higher ride height. Some of them are just pointless though. I was parked next to an X6 the other day and the sheer width and length of the wheelbase astounded me, especially when I saw how little space you get inside for a car of that footprint. I just couldn't see the point!
