I understand what your saying, HOWEVER, you have to protect your body. Lugging the buckets by hand in the 20 foot snow is a great story and a booster to your self standing, but fast forward 10 to 20 years when you are getting ready to enjoy your hard work but you cant because your back and forth to the doctor for the back and shoulder problems that developed or the arthritis in your hands is so bad you have to hire someone to prune your trees and feed the animals. You have to think about your wellbeing also. In the "olden days" they had no choice. They also died at 35. A little ease in doing one task isnt going to make you a lesser farmer, or not worthy of pride in your achievements. That's just my opinion, maybe use the sled 3 days a week, while you young and strong, lol! Great video! It just worried the Nurse in me! Thank you.

My father always said to step back and think, "Am I the sort of person that I would hire, recommend, want to associate with, be friends with? " If not, then to do some serious thinking about what I was going to change to correct the issue.

1 thing I have been continually surprised about, in also sharing a story about creating a farm, is how many people think "hard work" is a reason to not do something. Its common to hear "once you realize how hard that is, you'll change your plan." We have literally invested 100s of thousands of $ so we can spend our freetime deep in hard work, and that wasn't a mistake on our part. Obviously it is important to work smart, but doing something hard is one of the most fundamentally human things you can do, and I don't think anyone regrets it once on the other side. It's hard to be proud of lazy comfort.
Also, carrying buckets sounds like a great core and leg workout. 2 things a farmer needs come spring! Maybe I need some winter ducks, lol.

    • @GoldShawFarm

Hi Morgan. Love your videos and your journey and want too, like so many others, send unasked for advice! I live in a seasoned climet harsher than yours and during the winters we have to manually fill the water "buckets" to the horses in pasture. We are talking about 2 ca 150 L/40 gallon bathtubes that needs to be refilled or topped up twice a day. Snowy days are the best because the bottles we use to fill these tanks are plastic with flat saides and rounded edges, meaning you can slide them across ice and snow. You take four or six of these 20 L/5 galon water can, dependeing on how many you can haul, attach some form of rope to the handles and drag them. It is far kinder to your body since the dragging motions strenghtens your muscles instead of straining your back so much and you still get the grip training.
On days without snow we use a small wagon with wheels that can take three of these water cans.
Farm work isn't about making the thoughest physical decision it's about being smart and effective. You want to spend the most of your energy and time enjoying the animals/scenery, not the physical labor ;)
I assum you've already learnt to never make the same trip twice if it can be made once.
Please keep enjoying your journey and let us join you through your videos. Thank you.

I understand your theory, but from someone with 3 shoulder surgery's in the last 3 yrs, I was out if commission for months , it made a bigger impact on my boyfriend that had to do my chores on top of working a 45hr work week, all because I was being selfish by doing it all my self ,not taking into mind if I hurt my self and who has to pick up the slack and who suffers from my choice. I absolutely agree with this way of going through life.
I remind myself that we choose our emotions and if I choose to be sad and sulky, the only person I’m affecting is myself -and the people that are closest to me. It’s incredibly liberating and soothing at times.
It’s not foolproof, but it helps me to stop, and check myself. To ask myself (for example) am I really angry about this, or am I simply doing what is the stereotypical/expected response and reaction. Will my emotional reaction change the situation or outcome? Could I do something to change the situation or outcome?
    Stuff like that.
You said things far more eloquently than I could (you even had quotes for goodness sake ❤).
Anyway, thanks for sharing this. I really appreciate the suggested reading...well, the authors that you mentioned.
    Thanks again and take care.

So can can enjoy more time with your farm. Husband runs snow blower throw our yard in paths to make it easier for our dogs to run the yard. Some very interesting philosophical dellema your taking on this winter. Sort of makes me wish I could fast forward to next winter just to see if it's the cold isolation of NE Kingdom or just idle time spent thinking out loud! That duck was checking out the bucket long before she jumped in it (she wasn't getting a turn in the pools because the other ducks were hogging it--my guess is she's at the bottom of the pecking order). I think she thought she'd have her own private pool if she jumped in the bucket (she could probably smell the water and feel some leftover heat coming from it); little did she know that there was no water in there XD
