The nurse pushing the chair towards the doc and he just sits in it as it rolls up was a nice touch.

My sister suffered a similar accident to this 2 years ago but with a metal fence and just the one arm. The spike narrowly missed her neck and chest. She's fully recovered and has a huge scar. I just remember opening the front door to see her covered in blood and crying so hard and going into shock.

Ouch!! This reminds me of an incident that happened to me when I was a little kid in about 1986. I fell onto an old glass gerbil habitat that was kept in a shed outside my parents’ apartment. It shattered and lacerated my arm. It was the only time in my life that I needed stitches. I’ll never forget the pain and the blood!!

    Hi Vicki!
I've read many of your comments and know you are a wonderful person and professional. My heart goes out to you and I appreciate the work you do. I have many medical conditions resulting in lots of surgery and trips to the ER. But I still enjoy life and I am grateful to EMT's, doctors, nurses, etc. and my family and friends who all make it better for me. Please know I do care. People in the medical field have a special place in my heart.
    Take Care, Sara

I like how they made the point that using medical transport is important to prep the hospital for the patient's arrival. If you just think you'll drive them there yourself, you're giving up proper emergency care and walking smack into a wall when you get there because they won't know you're coming or what to prepare for.

keep in mind, this was done in the late 80's early 90's they didn't have the extensive computer softwear we do now. I think they did a pretty good job with what they had. There is some segments that make me cringe like when the woodshop worker cuts his wrist off or the kid that runs through the glass door in heart of glass. To top it off the descriptions of the injuries is enough to make me pass out, IE the rollarcoaster injury description. I get the chills just thinking about it.

My sister received two blood transfusions and, to this day, she has no memory of the night it happened.
I wish I could say the same. That night is forever in my mind. That's why I had to do this work. It's the only way to turn something negative into something positive.

A friend of ours had the same thing happen to him, we were running through the house playing hide and go seek, it was a huge house, 6,000sq, a basement and 3 floors. And he happened to run through the kitchen through a sitting area towards the sun room, which had a glass door. Both arms were severely cut. I had never seen so much blood. Thank goodness he is ok now.

She's lucky she didn't cut her face or neck when she fell. After seeing this, I wouldn't try to hang anything over a mirror or window. A few months ago I fell off a makeshift platform while I was making a video, and I hit my garage floor on my side. It took a month for the pain in my back to stop. Thank goodness there wasn't any glass or anything sharp for me to fall on.

That's exactly how it happened with my sister. We were all doing something normal, which was exercises in my case and school work in my mom's. Everything was normal one minute, then she comes upstairs and gets sick. Coughs up a sink full of blood.
I felt like the fires of hell had come alive in our house. And I had no idea how to handle what I was seeing.

Shelly was very fortunate. She got top care and good doctors were able to save her arm. Other episodes, were the victim lost their arms or legs, they just didn't get the top care Shelly received and they lost their arms and legs. It all depends on what hospital you go and what doctors work on you.

I think her mistake was telling a family member the patient's "going to be all right" when strictly speaking she doesn't KNOW that.
What would have happened if she had died? That last statement would have stayed with the family member forever.
I know this for a fact b/c I was family member of a Trauma 1 patient before I ever became a Paramedic.
I would have hated the dispatcher who told me she was going to be all right if my sister had died that night.

    • @nowandaround312

If she had died, the last thing she'd care about is that the dispatcher tried to comfort her when she was panicking.

      Vicki Bee
They have to calm you down though because panicking will result in death or leaving the victim in a more serious condition
The calmer you are the more information you can give and receive, meaning they can do more to help save the persons life

    • @katherynedarrah4245
      @katherynedarrah4245 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Are you or have you ever been on the other side of the radio? I have. And the thing is, when you're talking to a hysterical family member, you'll tell the ANYTHING to calm them down. as a medic you should know how difficult as it is to deal with a hysterical person face to face. Think about if you had to do that without ever seeing or physical interacting with them.

There are PLENTY of tourniquet improvisation videos on TH-cam that will teach you this critical component of controlling major blood loss. When seconds matter, having this knowledge in your back pocket can literally be the difference between life and death. I cannot stress the importance of this fact enough.

I know what you mean, when I was 16 my dad had a massive heart attack. He was getting ready in the bathroom and I heard a thud. The lady on 911 expected me to pick him up which was impossible. The hospital was less than a block and a half away and yet it took them 12 minutes for them to get to our house. He didn't make it. Its been nearly 10 years and I still have nightmares about it.

@wiiplayer9isback I once fell off a weak chair in the kitchen at age 7...but I luckily was not near glass, I just fractured my arm.

I don't think that was the case. It could have just been some issues. As said, she did move back in with her mother.

Yikes, i had an escooter accident and i remember when i saw my elbow and could see deep into it, that it wasn't a simple oh just put a band aid on. I thought i had a concussion or worse, but my helmet took the blunt force trauma that my head didn't get, and having my arms out saved my face from shattering my face. It is painful having a deep cut, i used some gloves i had in my pocket and ripped the fingers off and used a pen to make a makeshift tourniquet as my arm was pretty bad. I used my scooter while in horrible pain i felt my arms were broken. I made it to the hospital in a storm, the dr was amazed that i made a makeshift tourniquet 😅 and a wet nap from a montanas to hold the bleeding. 😅 its scary the fact all i had was a deep gash on my elbow and scrapes no broken bones just some tendon issues, take it easy out there! Freak accidents do happen but this show taught me to keep calm and to control the bleeding. 😅 it also saved my friends life when i did chest compressions after my friend had a seizure after their friends left them alone, i stayed and made sure they were okay, if i didn't do chest compressions they would have passed away that day, or died from falling into a corner of the bed frame, i was able to push him aside to avoid that. My friend since then is doing better and is thriving and still feels they can't repay me, after saving their life. Thank you rescue 911

That scared the hell out of me too, Lium, but nothing tops Rescue 9-1-1 Toddler Glass Save. I am so glad Shelly is okay now, and I pray she has regained full use of her arms. Watch the show I mentioned above. That little girl was cut so badly that her intestines were hanging out. She had an angel with her that day.

This is the edited version of the story. The uncut one is about two minutes longer and is a little more intense (in my opinion): th-cam.com/video/W44WWK7yfCQ/w-d-xo.html

@wiiplayer9isback 69 thumbs up.. I think the moral of the story is, don't use a stool at all. Use a stepladder. ;)

  • @scotthayes4135

The stool wasn't strong enough, she should have used a step ladder.
