There’s no excuse for distasteful jokes, but we have to admit, these jokes would definitely not fly in today’s social climate. Fat Monica was always one of the prime running jokes throughout the series, even though it was fat shaming. They also mocked a recovering alcoholic, made fun of lesbians, and when everyone was transphobic. Eek, we definitely let a LOT of things fly back then.

I am a lesbian and I first watched Friends this year and never got offended by any of the lesbian jokes. Tbh I often hate modern shows for making lgbtq people seem like those perfect beings (either funny, smart, beautiful, always getting in a perfect relationship after one date etc.), because they are to afraid to offend someone. Susan and Carol were great characters, because "being a lesbian" never was their main "character trait" and the way the main friend group made their jokes was not mean spirited and made them more real (my friends make lesbian jokes all the time because they know I enjoy them as well and that it's just a joke and that's what really good friends do: they are comfortable enough to joke around with each other just like we do straight jokes as well).

A rebuttal for each point:
10. Joey and Chandler do jump up and freak out about breastfeeding, but they are shown to be in the wrong in this situation. Carol even allows them to ask questions to get a better understanding of why it is so normal.
9. I think this joke was less about mocking Fun Bobby's recovery, but more about the situational irony that Monica needs to drink to tolerate his boring conversations. This isn't the most tasteful joke but it was just that - a joke. Plus Bobby knows what's best for him when he leaves Monica in the end because of the need to take care of himself - that shows a lot of bravery for that kind of character.
8. Although Ross is jealous and possessive, so is Rachel. She gets upset when Ross takes Ben to a play date with another child, and her mother happens to be a stripper. And she also attempts to ruin Ross' relationships. I'm not saying this behaviour is okay, but you can't blame it all on Ross here. Also, similar to the breastfeeding point, they are shown to be in the wrong in these situations, getting them into trouble for acting this way. It's not like the show glorifies this behaviour.
7. Regarding the NBC executive, who cares. They wrote this into the show to tell a story for the episode, and just because this one guy thought she was a "whore" doesn't mean audiences did. And regarding the number of guys Monica has slept with, she is embarrassed because she thinks the number is too large, but Richard is supportive to her even when she eventually tells him. It is also implied that Richard would not care about a large number because of his love for her. That episode actually seems to be arguing against "slut-shaming" by telling Monica the number of guys she's been with doesn't matter. Oh, and the Joey thing, that's his character. And he's pretty much the only one that thinks he's cool for sleeping with so many women, the other's don't praise him for it.
6. While Phoebe does underplay the events that happened, that's just how she saw the events. You can't really blame the assault victim for how they recall the events, she can say that "he made a move on me" but it doesn't mean it's not a sexual assault. They also do treat the subject seriously, not making it into a joke.
5. Come on! They don't make fun of Carol and Susan for being lesbians, they make fun of Ross for being too stupid to not understand that his wife is a lesbian. They actually treat the couple in a very respectful way, and even have one of the nicest episodes surrounding the couple. "The One With the Lesbian Wedding" shows that Ross has grown away from hating Susan for causing his split with Carol and he finally accepts that they truly do love each other.
4. This is another example of a character being in the wrong for what they do. Ross tries to get Ben to play with the G. I. Joe instead of his Barbie and multiple characters commented how pathetic it is. Once again, it's not promoting this behaviour. And concerning the Manny (Male-Nanny), this characteristic of Ross' shines through in this episode, and also casts him as wrong. But many characters love the male nanny, including the "manliest" friend Joey. You can put this up to Joey's childlike nature, but he accepts the Nanny with open arms and even hires him to teach him stuff after he is fired by Ross.
3. While I do think some of the jokes directed towards gays aren't as tasteful as one would hope, the point about the male's not wanting to show affection towards each other are once again, part of their characters. Every guy on this show wants to be a stereotypical manly man but most times they don't do conform because of their love for each other. Joey and Chandler constantly hug it out, and while they do comment about "hugging too much" they do it anyway in later episodes because they are such good friends. And the one with the Ross and Joey nap time thing, they kept doing it because they liked napping with each other.
2. This is probably the one argument I don't have a huge rebuttal for because most of the time the jokes about Monica's past weight were pretty mean spirited. Personally I thought the constant food jokes associated with the past episodes got pretty stale and annoying. But one thing I thought they did very well was showing that Chandler would love Monica even if she weighed the same. The "what if" episode is one of my top 5 favourites, mainly because of this reason. This episode shows that Monica and Chandler are truly meant to be because despite Chandler's picky attitude toward women, and overweight woman often, he still ends up with her.
1. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Chandler's dad was just a Drag Queen? Either way, most of Chandler's hatred toward his father stems from him being a terrible father, not from him being a drag queen. While there are hints that Chandler doesn't approve of who his father is, in the episode where he invites his father to his wedding, we see that Chandler has finally accepted his father for who he is, which is a pretty progressive thing for this kind of show to do.
This show was made in a different time, but most of these "issues were handled with a ton of respect. Even if some of them are slightly offensive, it was a comedy show. Personally I think it is okay to joke about anything as long as it isn't directed at a single person, but this show barely even does that. If we keep looking into the past to find things that wouldn't be acceptable by today's standards, we're just gonna keep finding things we don't like. If you search for things that are wrong, you're gonna find them, so just sit back and enjoy life and stop trying to ruin the good things we already have. Like sandwiches!

About number 2. I never thought jokes about Monica being fat was mean spirited. That is normal teasing about looks between friends. The same we could say about mocking Ross's haircut. In the circle of friends, calling fat people fat is not mean, it's just the truth. Monica knew she was overweight and they just joked about that, like they joke about everything else. If you can't joke around your best friends, where can you? Fat Monica was still very accepted, so there was no mean spirited fat-shaming

Ross was acting like a jealous idiot and jealousy was the cause of that bad behavior. He didn't act like that cause he hates Italians. Why everything must offend someone? Phoebe was also making fun of british accent, but in total innocent carefree way. Why can't we joke about different accents, about different nations, about different cultures,... we are different and we acknowledge that with healthy humour. Why everything must be taken as mean spirited racist joke? Political correctness is really the biggest enemy of comedy.

In the context of the show, it's portrayed as frowned upon ("hired yourself a little treat did you?"?), So I don't think it could've made the list. I agree that some of these jokes would just be the target of trigger-happy Twitter asshats today, and were but mildly crass at the time. Others I think... (the guys' OTT "homophobia" was I think the butt of the joke, to be laughed at, not with. Same with Ross ans the GI Joes (which pales in comparison to how progressive a storyline about a gay couple and a straight father caught up in it was at the time, more broadly). The only ones I'd agree with are volume of fat jokes, but those are the price we paid for that body suit dance...
That was a situation where a woman objectified a man.... no one cares about that.
I also found it interesting that they had phoebe being assaulted on the list but no mention of when chandler was assaulted by joeys tailor. They made quite a few jokes about it in the episode.

Ryan Courtright being gay was frowned upon then. It’s better now but still isn’t great. The “Me Too” movement didn’t happen until 2011. Neither of them would fly today but it was risky to put it in then (for Joey).

When Ross tried to make Ben play with "boy" toys, it was said in the show that it was wrong he was doing it and many characters said he was pathetic for acting like that. When Chandler and Joey were freaked out by the breast feeding they were called out on it to on the show. The jokes weren't offensive the jokes were jokes.

And in the end of the episode Monica destroys him by bringing up how he dressed up as a woman and sang a tea song as a kid and had no right to act upset by Ben playing with a doll. He ran into the bathroom in embarrassment as Monica sang the song to tease him.

I feel like the scene with Joy's tailor should have been a mention. The creepy old guy not only took advantage of Chandler but had done the same thing to Joey since he was 15, and poor Joey believed that was how it was done

The jokes all work because there is character growth and having a change of heart and thoughts. Plus these are friends who are honest with each other.

I completely agree with you. Friends has a big part in how society sees LGBTQ+ people : yet they made fun of this topic to some extent, but never in a mean way. In my opinion the authors managed to give visibility to the community by making fools out of the main characters of the show so that the viewer would say "hey, in fact these people are not freaks" to themselves.
They said the jokes wouldn't work TODAY. They didn't say they weren't progressive for the 90's. Our culture has changed a lot in 20 years.

Even then, then joke was mostly about their reactions. Like Chandler and Joey reacted like kids to Carol breastfeeding, the joke wasn't her, it was them. The joke was Ross reacting like a crazy person trying to take his son's Barbie. I don't remember Chandlers father ever being a joke, it was more a part of Chandler that we got to see and yes he was sometimes uncomfortable about it, but even now a days if you started your life with a male father married to your female mother and had to deal with him coming out and transitioning to life as a woman, that might be hard. I thought it was more his insecurity about what others think that was part of those episodes, and especially back then I can see how he was a relatable character.

It has a lesbian wedding wich everybody is okay with, a gay couple rising a child treated in a very respectful way, a transgender woman who is an accepted and successful member of society. If people manage to get offended by friends, they need therapy
You have to remember that they sometimes use those jokes to show how immature they are.. I mean, chandler once almost referenced to an old ex of his as fat, and Monica made him call her and apologize. Joey once got a girl roommate, and he was doing "girly" stuff, but at the end of the episode, he was okay with it. Chandler found out a lot of his friends and work buddies thought he was gay, and his problem was that one of them said a guy was out of his league.
So yeah, they make some outdated jokes that seem offensive nowadays, but when you look at the big picture, they did a lot of good stuff in that show too (you don't have to be married to have a baby, adoption is just as good as having kids through pregnancy, they addressed Monica and Chandler's jealousy in one episode and they never did it again, etc, etc...) so they never pretended that the group were good people.
Basically, you should've mentioned how they turned some stuff around, or reminded viewers that the show wasn't inherently bad. (also, with Ross/Rachel's unhealthy relationship, came great examples of healthy relationships, with Monica/Chandler and Pheobe/Mike)
Very true! And I think the show was progressive for all of the things featured in the video BECAUSE they addressed the issues and made fun of it. I thought it super progressive to address breastfeeding, a lesbian family, infertility and adoption, boys playing with girls toys, etc. They called these things out and used the goofiness of the characters to show how stupid those opposing attitudes actually were. The fat shaming was maybe the one that did fit on the list.
And it's never all of them having a certain opinion, e.g. only Ross himself felt weird about Ben playing with the doll and the others didn't really understand what his deal was and Joey loved the male nanny that Ross and Rachel hired. It was always one character that stood out and, in contrast to the other characters, behaved immaturely.

Well the thing about it is the series are supposed to be about how average people would react in these situations, but it also has to go with their already established characters. So yea they can be childish and stuff sometimes but this series starts off when most of their characters are early to mid 20s and end in their 30s, so the show is showing how they are learning to grow up and basically learn to accept things or move on from things in life in a comedic way.

I never was weirded out about Chandler and Joey being weird about the breastfeeding, I think that many people not just men find that a bit uncomfortable. As Ross was trying to be positive about it, I think it was okay.
I’m a woman and I think it feels uncomfortable setting in a room with a lady who’s breastfeeding… but of course there are cultural differences. I’m Arab and it is completely unacceptable in our culture to breastfeed in public..

When George Carlin died, I think people lost the ability to understand jokes. Sitcoms exaggerate things to make jokes. Plus yes, it does take some adjusting to when someone breastfeeds. Unless you’re around it a lot, it’s a little surprising. Joey and Chandler are a little shocked, Ross isn’t.
But Ross' behaviour isn't portrayed as a good thing, so why would that be a problem? And the whole lesbian thing as well as the masculinity problems are always played in a way that makes it clear, that the opinions the characters have are ridiculous, which is why they're a joke.

It's the "Archie Bunker" effect. TV writers now worry that unless they portray a bigoted character as evil and not just laughable, viewers will laugh WITH the character rather than AT him and sympathize with his antisocial views.

The problem with Ross character is not that he acts possessive and jealous towards his girlfriend, because I agree that Rachel acts the same way in a lot of situations. The real issue here is the acceptance of his behavior towards women in general. He believes in the conservative role of men and women and thinks it's okay for him to shame women for being 'too forward' in pursuing guys they find attractive, when men act the same way all the time.
The show in general jokes about feminism and equality of men and women instead of addressing this as an issue, which results in the encouragement of behavior like Ross' towards women.
In this context, Rachel serves as a good example as a woman Ross thinks of as inferior to him.
Friends worked because how real it was. The jokes are still fine today.
They didn't break up because Ross was jealous, they broke up because of the whole "we were on a break" thing.

Except Chandler's dad isn't transgender. He's gay and dressed in drag and did drag shows. Either way, put yourself in Chandler's shoes. It would be hard on not only him but his mom as well coming to terms with this. Just like it was hard for Ross to accept that his ex-wife and first love is a lesbian and left him for a woman. It was groundbreaking in that it talked about these issues, shows character flaws and growth (Monica and Richard ultimately separated because of the issue of having kids, not her number..Monica and Chandler also worked through her taking issue with him poking fun about weight in the past and present) and they also had a lesbian couple and a drag queen character on the show, which was huge in the 90s. Considering when Ellen's character came out on her sitcom and it wasn't received well, you have to see how big of a sea it was for them to start their show off with a lesbian couple right off the bat. This is what made their characters relatable. They had issues like everyone else. This is just a testament to how extremely sensitive and quick to react to stupid shit this generation is. It says something when the jokes still hold up today and can make us laugh. Ross' treatment of women may also stem from the fact that his and Monica's parents treated him like the golden child and clearly preferred him over Monica. Then the situation with Carol as well. Doesn't make it right and it's a flaw that's never resolved, but really...what would Ross be if he didn't have those flaws?
Of course Chandler's dad is transgender, she's played by Kathleen Turner for Christ's sake. If Chandler's dad was a gay male drag queen, they would have cast a man in the role and done him up in drag. Besides, gay men have done drag along side transgender drag performers since gay culture became a thing so being a headliner in Vegas doesn't make a difference regarding Chandler's dad's gender identity. I completely get that the 90's was a different time, before political correctness, but as a gay guy, the storyline between Ross and Ben, for example, regarding the Barbie is incredibly offensive to me, because that was my childhood, and the childhoods of so many people like me, and it was taken and written as a joke for straight people to laugh at. It's easy to sit there and say 'Oh people are overly sensitive nowadays', when you're not gay, or trans or bullied, or struggle with body image or addiction or identity like some of the 'jokes' highlighted, and you've never had to deal with the pain that comes with the reality. It's easy to say that when you've had a relatively easy life. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Friends and it'll hold a very special place in my heart, and is widely recognised as one of, if not the one and only, greatest TV show of all time, but some of the jokes in the show are a reflection of the ignorance of 90's and they should stay in the '90's.
I never liked the Ross character as created by Schwimmer, but I have some sympathy for his situation. Imagine how humiliating to a man it would be for his wife to leave him for a woman.

I did kinda feel that an overweight person is ridiculous and it really wasn't pleasant during my teenage.. And I wasn't even a big girl,it was more or less an extra 20 pound ass :P, which I've lost later on. And the two of the girls are too skinny.. Like, Monica had to keep on being thin so she could date chandler who gained pound after pound each season?? Also Joy could be spot with round chicks and a full gut in many occasions.. Maybe I was sensitive with the body image stuff due to my personal sensitivity and that's why I don't like this aspect of friends at all!

For the record, these jokes might get the show canceled in today's day in age, but to say they "would not work" might not be accurate. Considering how immensely popular the show STILL is today, I'd say that most people still find the jokes (and show overall) entertaining.

If we're allowed to be happy when a pregnant characters give birth, you're allowed to be happy for transgender (it isn't transsexual anymore, by the way. The show is highlighting in a light hearted way, the very complex nature of addiction - including the tendency to project, notice, something inaccurately, other people’s issues with substances & be unable to be around it during recovery. One of the most helpful parts of recovery is to be able to bring humour to the situation not to trivialise but to as a way to bring lightness to a very real issue

For argument's sake, 'cause I love this show 😂, Rachel was pretty crazy jealous and ruins Ross's relationships as well. She got Phoebe's friend to shave her head again, she showed up on Ross's wedding to stop it, she told him that she likes him TWICE when he was in a loving relationship (Julie & when he was making up with Emily after the wedding). Plus, Ross' jealousy of Mark was clearly valid as she invited him over right after "they were on a break" and then proceeded to date him later in the series just to get back at Ross. So if we're talking petty characters, I'd say Rachel is definitely up on that list.
Quite agree, and even though Ross was jealous it seemed clear from Rachels comments she and Ross were all but broken up, then she gets upset how he sleeps with someone on the rebound then later forces him to "agree" that hes a terrible person and the only one in the wrong.
I agree with most things you mention but not the Mark thing. Ross was worried that Mark was going to come on to Rachel and that Rachel would cheat on him with Mark. The girls kept saying he had it all wrong. They were right, since while Mark was indeed interested in Rachel, he never intended to do anything about it while Rachel was still seeing Ross (he says this when she invites him over).

It's worth noting that this video has 5k likes and 4k dislikes. I have never seen a video of this type with such a poor like to dislike ratio. I think the reason is that whoever wrote the narrative for this video didn't actually seem to research context of most of the things mentioned. Here's some examples, breast feeding openly is not widely accepted today. All anyone has to do is go to Facebook and look a post on breast feeding to see a plethora of people having a hissy fit and even saying it's gross... Friends' plot is actually useful because a conversation about it takes place and Carol answers questions about the situation. Another example is the trans plot, the course of the show reveals that Chandler's father tried to reach out to him, and Chandler eventually reconnects with is father. And by the way, the issues between Chandler and his father wasn't strictly about being trans, it was about his father starting relationships with people in Chandler's life, like from school. I notice Mojo didn't take issue with Chandler's mother being called out for messing with his friends... Well, Chandler had the same situation with his father. Both of Chandler's parents seemed more interested in their romantic lives than their child much of the time. Also, as another commenter pointed out, "Chandler's dad isn't transgender. He's gay and dressed in drag and did drag shows." Indeed, there is no indication that Chandler's father has any interest in getting surgery and being female in every way. Hence, Mojo got the terminology wrong, which also demonstrates a lack of research and awareness. Now, while I agree generally about Ross' possessiveness, the fact that Mojo used the "Is this about Mark?" clip demonstrates a lack of awareness of the plot, because it is revealed that Mark did indeed have a thing for Rachel. So while Ross did act like an ass, that wasn't totally without provocation. Additionally, while talking about Ross interfering with Rachel's relationships, you include a clip of Ross trying to discourage Paolo, who a minute later Mojo points out is a sexual predator who assaulted Phoebe. So yeah, Ross was trying to stop a relationship with Rachel and Paolo, a guy who was clearly a creep. While I grew to dislike a lot about Ross over the seasons, interfering in a toxic relationship with a sleazeball isn't something I hold against Ross. The fat shaming was something I find kind of cringe-worthy, but yet again, Mojo needs to also consider the over all context. Monica talks on a number of occasions about how she was hurt by people's reactions to her weight, and she even called out Chandler for his past behavior towards her and towards his camp girlfriend who had gained weight, therefore it was educating the audience and a opportunity for character growth. So for all the above reasons and more, it appears that whoever produced this video was far out of their depth of knowledge and failed to research to remedy that lack of knowledge.

With regards to the Monica and Richard one, my take from that was that it was less about the number of sexual partners Monica had, and more the fact that Richard had only really ever been with his ex, implying he was less experienced. If anyone was being shamed there, it was him, and I don't even think they were shaming him. Monica and Richard acknowledged the gap in their experience and worked with it. They break up because Richard was done having kids, not because he hadn't slept with enough women, or because Monica had slept with too many men.

That his generation had their low number of partners, usually their spouses..and women were more comfortable with their sexualities in the 90s and had more partners..especially since they were in their mid-20s, right? Ok. I don’t want to be “that guy in the comments section” but there’s a lot wrong with this. Yeah some of the issues you mentioned were bad like Phoebe being harassed or the guys’ constant masculinity problems but overall Friends was super progressive. They had a lesbian couple (who were married on the show!) and a trans woman. So what if they made a few jokes the characters were all shown as good people. That’s still a huge step for representation. Also you missed a lot of very insensitive things on this list like how Rachel hired a hot assistant to harass, or how Chandler and Joey were molested by a tailor, and how Joey had to sleep with a casting agent to help his career. It seems like anything bad that happened to men on this show was no big deal but if a woman gets fat-shamed that’s unacceptable. Sometimes they did go overboard with Monica’s weight but they were jokes and not supposed to be taken seriously. Honestly them calling Chandler's dad trans is a disservice here cause it gives the jokes a bad context, and his use of male pronouns comes off as dismissive/hateful.
CHandler's Dad was a drag queen which is in fact very different and thus all his interactions are far less cringy with the correct context. Could they have made this clearer by casting an actual drag Queen? YEs yes they could have.
They also made it seem like CHandler was exclusively hateful of his father which he totally wasn't he had complex relationships with both parents because frankly they were kinda just bad parents...not bad people per say but not good parents

People gets offended way to easily these days. Back then movies, shows and kids shows were way better, when everyone wasn't crying about everything
Maybe it's because I'm currently breastfeeding but I find the breastfeeding episode hilarious. My brother and dad act the same way when I start breastfeeding 😂😂
its the fact that people are getting offended by EVERY SINGLE thing these days. Thats why any sitcom would not work on tv today
@Rachel Berryman I haven't really watched any of these shows but you could be right. But there is a difference between humor and offensive words and friends has a lot of things that people take so seriously nowadays. Well actually people take everything seriously today not only TV shows but every little thing in the world. By the way i am not coming at you, you probably are right about the shows you mentioned

I just found and started watching the Joey spinoff online recently and I gotta tell ya, I don't think it was really that bad. And its also nice to see Joey having to grow up even for a little bit.
