Chinchilla vs Cat

  • I have extensive experience with animals & animal behaviour and so my animals always have an escape route if feeling threatened. Chi Chi is a mid age Chinchilla which I rescued from Freemans Bay, Auckland. Whiskers I rescued from under a school classroom in Mangere, Auckland that had been getting its daily meals from the kids. Both were obtained 2 weeks apart in April 2014. Both have lovely personalities. Never ever seen a cat before that doesn't use its nails but Whiskers is a first, just always gently bites and holds proceeding to licking the victim (:P) afterwards. Chi Chi did bite a bit when changing things in enclosure but never when outside of cage. Thankfully with his new much larger cage not seen in this video he doesn't do that anymore. Adoption is far better than buying from a mill or breeder.
    Song is called: To be young (is to be sad) by Ryan Adams. I don't own any part of it.

      Hi mate, I often wonder the same. Chi chi developed an inner ear infection at the age of over 11 years old. I took him to an exotic vet that said these animals do not survive these things. I spent $4k across 2 exotic vets to keep him alive. They did 2 operations, several courses of different antibiotics. It didn't matter. He was very clear 1 day that he had enough and it was time. Chi Chi was surrendered to me. All I had was a back story. He was with another kit. Apparently which ran off a balcony and passed away. The person that surrendered him to me was the 2nd person to have him. I arrived and he had a filthy rusted outside cage. It was raining like hell and a typical 10 degree celcius auckland evening. Which I think is where he got his temper from. I have never ever seen a chinchilla with such a temper. I still miss him incredibly much. He had another rescue friend Bella which I got from the SPCA. I still have her she is very healthy and I believe around 8 years old.

      Hi there: it is volcanic dust, not sure if it is exclusive to NZ. I tried red desert sand from australia but that was just way too messy. They bath in extremely fine grained sand, dust or ash but it needs to be bought from a pet store, can't just use any old sand :)

    This is cute. Your chin is super adorable.
    I have a similar story, my one cat gets along well with my degu's. He protects them from the other cats and would even alert me when a baby escaped (loooong story, I ended up with sixteen goo's, and a cage with bars too spaced apart for the babies.) When one baby degu was sick, the cat let it cuddle up to him. Usually I would not let them even near each other, but first of all this cat has helped raise siblings from the time they were born (aka smaller than a degu) and I'm always right beside and ready to snatch them up (never have I needed to.) Another fact: my cat went into mourning when my elderly gerbil finally passed away, even going so far as to stop eating for a day and pulled out fur on his backside.
    So, to all those ppl saying no prey animals and predators. Generally you'd be right, but there's always exceptions. Sometimes they get along fine. I'm sure everything was taken into consideration before they were introduced.

    Your 'extensive experience with animals & animal behavior' clearly needs some more expanding. You do NOT put a natural predator and a natural prey animal together. Training and behavior are irrelevant to generations of mental evolution.
    Anyone with any basic chinchilla knowledge will tell you that so many chinchillas have been killed because of something as simple as a single swap of an arm from a cat. Even while in there cage. Putting them both out together is so far beyond irresponsible. Its flat out neglect and abuse.
    And even if the cate doesnt get the chin, a chins naturaly mentality as a prey animal mean he will be terrified inside. Chins are great at hiding physical and mental health problems usually until its to late for anything to be done. And the stress from being around a cat like that can lead to all kinds of nasty health issues for a chin.
    NEVER LET A CHIN OUT WITH A CAT OR DOG. They shouldn't even be allowed near a chin cage because they can swipe through the bars!!

    • @Mrwarrenlwebber
      @Mrwarrenlwebber  9 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Natural predator and prey? Right on! Two domesticated species separated by major climatic differences are suddenly thrown in the mix and a catastrophe is about to occur. Sounds a bit dramatic like your youtube name and narrow minded belief. The cat and the chinchilla actually get on very well together. I am assuming that you don't win any religious arguments and so you thought you would try another topic. Notice no question mark. Well as a vegan I would like to tell you that your knowledge of animal behaviour is shocking.

    • @DominionofGod
      @DominionofGod 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just because an animal is a pet or 'domesticated' does not mean there natural instincts are suddenly gone. Its a plain fact. Cats and dogs are a predator species. Chinchillas are a prey species. Cats also pass diseases to chins. Similar to how a rabbit can live with pasteurella with no problems, but can pass it to a chin which can a pretty nasty way for them to die.
      The most certainly should not be out playing together like that.

    • @Mrwarrenlwebber
      @Mrwarrenlwebber  9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      DominionofGod Yes my chinchilla the other was at threat of being attacked by a praying mantis and I had to stop my cat from catching a sheep in the field. Humans can catch a cold, dogs can get cat flu. But you're not going to believe this, I mean seriously: science helped formulate A c.o.n.t.r.o.l.l.e.d e.n.v.i.r.o.n.m.e.n.t. Amazing right.

    This is not cute, not to someone knowledgeable who truly cares for Chinchillas and their well being. Even with your OPINION, you're avoiding the facts. Your chinchilla is a prey animal and is showing signs of defense with a predator in his area. He's scared, Fight or Flight. This chinchilla is obviously showing signs of aggression, and isn't playing but trying to chase the cat off. Someone who's studied animals SHOULD be able to recognize the behavior. This isn't even going into the medical concerns considering pasterurella is found in cats and infectious to chinchillas. It will kill them. I wonder how many owners tried this with their poor chinchillas and caused them to become injured or killed! This is a terrible example to put out there.

      +Let's Love Chinchillas! Some people need clarification (ie. you). 1 This is not an example video of how pets should be placed together. 2 This is not a video that should be reproduced or attempted to be practiced by someone that purely is attempting to get publicity or trying to be a show-off. 3 You need to stop buying & breeding chinchillas pretending you rescue chinchillas. 4 Everything stated by anyone on youtube is an opinion and extremely subjective, open to debate and other opinions. 5 The previously rescued chinchilla and cat in my care get on really well.

    • @letslovechinchillas6294
      @letslovechinchillas6294 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Warren Webber I don't need to do anything you tell me to do. I can buy any chinchilla I want, but I choose to buy from reputable breeders who don't abuse or neglect their animals. I can breed whomever I want, but if I do breed I will choose to only breed animals that are pedigreed, vet approved, shown, and approved by judges and mentors. I rescue animals who need to be rescued, not re-homed. There is a fine line between the two, all of which you wouldn't know about me unless you've met me face to face but I assume we never shall meet. The difference between you and I? I don't put my animals in dangerous situations like you simply for a video to share on TH-cam. They will get on as well as they do until one ends up in the dirt.

To you it is just a hobby and something that makes you happy or even brings in income perhaps (the worst kind), however for me I accept animals and provide a home in which they are safe, comfortable, free to explore and best of all... incident free. But please carry on trolling, I implore you to continue questioning my techniques but kindly on behalf of chinchillas,., you really should stop breeding them.

    Love this! Well done for taking in animals in need. I was thinking as I watched that your cat not only looks like mine but acts like her as well. No claws, just very gentle. Even when the vet had to do something painful to her she just tried to push her hand away with a soft paw. But then the same vet also said that she likes black cats because they always seem to be extra calm.
    As for chinchillas, my cat fears them. My first rescue was lovely and they used to get along, the second though hates cats and I always had to make sure I had the cat locked in a separate room. If the chinchilla managed to get into the same room (she would hang around the door waiting for her chance) she would go for the throat, shrieking as she flew through the air, and then hang on while the cat tried to run away. Too terrifying to be funny.
    I am surprised that barrier stops your chin though. My girl who hates cats can jump 4 feet straight up o.0

  • @ForzaGleeAzzuri
    @ForzaGleeAzzuri 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You obviously don't know much about chinchillas to be doing this. This is borderline animal cruelty for the mere fact that a chin can die from a prey animal with a single swipe, even if they are "just playing." You should take people's advise that are experienced in chin care, like Dominionofgod, instead of disrespecting them.
    Another word of advise: plastic can be deadly to a chin

    • @Boredchinchilla
      @Boredchinchilla 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He clearly knows his chin- as long as they don't chew plastic, it is fine to keep it in their cage. Some chins are chewers and some are not; of the 10 that I have right now, 2 are chewers of everything, so their cage has no plastic in it, but 5 others only chew certain plastics, which I keep out of their cages ( soft, margarine container plastic). The others are fine with anything in their cage, and only chew wood. Chinchillas are some of the smarts animals out there; a study was recently done at Stanford that compared their intelligence to Squirrel monkeys and parrots. My chins are more my companions than my pets; they have their own tv, and choose their ownshows- well, the 3 that enjoy television do- and you better watch out if you try to watch something that they don't like- they love Phineas and Ferb and Adventure Time. Each chin has its own personality, and they cannot be lumped into " they all do this"just like you cannot do it with people . A chinchilla will not screw around- if that cat was actually scaring it, the chin would have taken it down and gone back to its cage for dinneralready-they may be considered prey animals, but they don't act anything like any prey animal I have ever seen ( and I have kept and bred many different kinds).

    @Warren Webber just curious. Does your cat have a high prey drive? Also, what did you do to get cat and chincilla to be like that? I have two cats and I researching getting a chincilla, but i want everyone to get along as well. Of course, I would always supervise chincilla play time around my cats, but I just need as much of your guidance as possible. ^_^

      Hi there, so sorry for late reply. In my opinion it can be a very scary situation for a chinchilla not used to cats. My current chinchilla girl would not jump out of her cage for about 7 years with the cats roaming. Currently she is getting more confident. Never ever forced them to be together. If they interact I am present within 2 meters. Younger cats are more inquisitive and may be a bigger problem than older cats which aren't generally bothered (not all cases, just in general). Dont leave them alone by themselves please :)

      Why? It’s the cutest thing ever. They just automatically know that it’s time to roll around in the dust when you set the container out. They don’t smell bad at all. They are very clean also in my experience They are very sweet . We have an 8 yr old female named Chloe and my wife absolutely loves her . The dust bath is far easier than a water bath would be. Just keep a little hand held vacuum near by and it’s no biggie at all .
