When representation is too accurate that people actually need therapy afterwards, then it was a damn good movie. One thing i do want to say about representation. I hate that every time a show has someone who is of a different race/background/sexuality/etc that people say it’s the woke agenda. Like why. When those characters are token characters, we complain too. When it’s bad representation, we complain too. When there’s just a character who happens to be different, it’s not some woke agenda. It’s just life. Also. So i had an epiphany recently. So I’m gay. I have many friends who are straight and completely accepting of the lgbtq community. But they haven’t lived the experience. They haven’t had to deal with homophobia the same as us, or coming out, or acceptance of our sexualities, etc. Or having to hide who we are for some people. Like we can exist, we just can’t talk about our experiences because it makes people uncomfortable. So even though some of them are great allies, there are some things that they don’t understand the same as us due to living different experiences. That’s a pretty good analogy for white people being great allies to people of colour, but still not being able to see situations in the same light. I don’t know if that makes sense to other people. But u thought I’d share my 2 cents. I’m not saying straight/white people can’t speak on these issues, but they do need to realise that they haven’t lived the experiences and will have somewhat different perspectives on things.
It’s hard to grasp specifics, which is why I wouldn’t speak for anyone else. But early personal experience led me to understand, for example, how “justice” can be tilted by bias. How being different from the “norm” can make you a target. How you can feel like an alien to the prevailing culture despite it ostensibly being “your” culture. I don’t have to live the specific experiences to understand them. Nor do I have to necessarily understand them to accept them as valid. Plenty of things I have never understood about what’s supposed to be “my” world. People often seek the comfort of familiar things and turn away from what doesn’t speak to them immediately. I think this is often a mistake. Human understanding requires emotional sacrifices.
@@Saje3D true. Like I’m not saying people are oblivious to these issues. But they may not be at the forefront of their mind.
