    I have used a Gopro for many years. From version 3 to version 11. Now I have not upgraded to ver. 12, but I switched to the DJI Action 4. I personally like the image quality of the Action 4 better, the larger sensor, better results in reduced visibility and the simplicity of the settings. It also doesn't get as hot when placed in an underwater case.
    I enjoyed your LUT's, thank you for them.

    Great video! The reason the GoPro looks so green is because the AWB is trying to pull the extra amount of red down from the filter by compensating with the addition of green. I'd imagine you would see better results with a manually selected white balance temperature. I'm very impressed with the look of the Osmo 4, it looks incredible!

    • @MatthiasLebo

      I agree, the Osmo Action 4 has really impressed me too.
      Setting manual WB temperatures is really a tricky thing underwater as you will need to adjust that setting the deeper down you go. And on a GoPro you can only do that by creating several presets with different color temperatures and changing constantly as you depth changes throughout your dive. Definitely doable but not very convenient or user friendly. Being able to rely on a well working auto WB would be much nicer. 😉

  • @vp4991

    Matthais, another very helpful video. I am indeed deciding on which of these to use. Can you share your thoughts on potential for Osmo performance in green water? Pacific coast of US will be most of my use. Given your WB setting of choice, might you expect this same comparison to change much in green water? (This does then beg the question, would you use the underwater WB setting or AWB in green water, say on a dive under 20m? No flip filter for the Osmo, as you said).

    • @MatthiasLebo

      I haven't tried the Osmo Action in green water yet, but I don't think my comparison findings will be much different. The Osmo Action 4 (to my knowledge) does not have an underwater WB, so I would use the regular AWB.

      OK, sehe gerade, Du sprichst Deutsch.

    How would you compare things like usability and bugs? For many of us that aren't pros or primarily upload to social media, the difference between the 2 video qualities is negligible and perhaps the gopro has a slight edge with it's large amount of easily available accessories (as you demonstrate with the lack of the red filter for the osmo). For me what would really put the osmo in front would be reliability and not freezing or needing the battery reinstalling to work normally (as gopros, in my experience, seem to do occasionally).

    • @maxmustermann1381

      The DJI does not need a red filter as it has a dedicated white balance sensor in the front in the letter "O". Thus the results were better even without a red filter.

    • @MatthiasLebo

      Thanks for that inside. I wasn't aware of that. DJI is not really marketing this feature. I wonder why? Do you by any chance know how this white balance sensor works? What parameters does it use to determine the accurate white balance?

    • @MatthiasLebo

      Well, I simply didn't have enough time in the water with those two cameras on my recent trip to make competent statements about those topics. I hope I get some more experience using both action cams on my upcoming trip to the Maldives, being able to answer some of those questions after the trip. Generally speaking the handling is pretty much the same with both. What I noticed though was that the Osmo Action has a much longer lasting battery life than the GoPro. That in my opinion could be a big plus for many of us underwater users.

    What about the close focus capability? I heard that close subjects are not sharp with DJI Osmo, which is due to the larger sensor size (and that the focus is set further away to have sharp infinity).

    • @MatthiasLebo

      Well to be honest, none of these two action cams is really capable of recording close focus imagery unless you use extra accessories. I haven't tested the minimal focusing distance of each of the cameras, but I would personally not try to record and close up shots with them anyways. Both of them are simply not made for that type of footage.

    I have only just now read this about
    the osmo action 4 when scuba
    diving."When diving below 16 meters
    with the Osmo Action 4 and the Scuba
    Diving mode activates due to pressure,
    the usual shutter/record button is
    disabled. In this case, you'll use the
    Quick Switch (QS) button to start
    and stop recording. The QS button is
    designed to work under high-pressure
    conditions, allowing you to control
    recording without relying on the
    shutter/record button. So, even deep
    underwater, the QS button becomes
    your main control for starting and
    stopping video recording".So this
    button becomes a universal button
    to power on, select video or photo,
    then take a picture or start shooting a
    video. I checked the DJI manual and it
    doesnt clearly say how this is achieved.
    I checked with dji support and they said you need to decide wether you will be taking photos or videos past 16 meters before the pressure cutoff kicks in.Then you can only use the camera as a start and stop. You cant play back videos on a dive or scroll to other presets to bracket different fstops and iso settings etc.

      More sharpness doesn’t necessarily mean more detail. Detail comes mainly from resolution. Too much sharpness quickly makes your footage look digital, and that really isn’t a good thing. I always keep sharpness at low and add sharpness in post production manually. Gives me just much more control on how much sharpness I want to add for best results.

    I've bought a Osmo 4 to take to red sea in 2 weeks time. I've had to make my own flip holder to hold a macro lens. its a shame I cant buy any of the new Inon lenses for it. Ill have to make do with a Inon UCL-165. It can be used with Osmo in wide setting, or Dewarp Wide using video. Then I can focus at 16 cm, instead of 40cm .

      That is quite an improvement in minimal focusing distance. Well done. 👍
