Nissan Leaf 40 kWh summer range test: 245 km/150 mi

  • I did a summer test of the new Nissan Leaf 40 kWh. Due to limited time and also limited fast chargers, I could only discharge 63 % of the battery. The range of 245 km/150 mi is estimated based on that. This car has a WLTP range of 270 km. So my result is just 91 % of that one which is not too bad.
    I estimate that winter eco range is about 200 km/125 mi as well as summer motorway speeds. The average speed in this test was around 80 km/h, 50 mph. This basically means that the current Ioniq with 28 kWh (approx 31 kWh gross) has the same range as the new Nissan Leaf. The reason is that Ioniq is more efficient despite having smaller battery.

    Just what I expected, and confirms our decision to buy the Ioniq. It's sub-zero in the UK right now and the Ioniq is doing around 120 miles on motorways. The faster charging time is a bonus too!

    Hi Bjorn,
    first of all, congratulations for the victory in the consumption contest :)
    Now, with a consumption of 137 Wh / km, and a battery pack of 40 kWh, how do you come to 245 km range? The plain division gives out 292 km (no safety taken into account, right)
    Thanks for the video, and greetings from southern France.
    PS: did you try and sleep in the new Leaf?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      40 kWh is gross capacity. I estimated net capacity (available energy for driving) to 36 kWh. The consumption number in Leaf doesn't seem to take in account regen energy. During my descend in the battery challenge video, I mentioned that despite gaining 2 % SoC, consumption showed 0.1 kWh/100 km. That number should have been negative. The estimated range in my test is therefore based on driven distance and SoC consumed.

    • @pierremorant8885
      @pierremorant8885 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again, Bjorn. Ok, I did not expect that much of a reserve (4kWh, like 10% of the raw capacity). Thanks for the precision, and hope to see soon more videos from you on the new Leaf, like life on board, interior and space, dB measurements compared to others maybe, motorway driving at various speeds, and naturally can-I-sleep-in-the-new-Leaf :)
      Keep cool, and greetings from southern France

      Hi again Bjorn. So, counting on a regen of about 20% of the energy (is this assumption ok?), that would lead to almost 300 km range with quiet real-life driving, right? How would you rate this car compared to the Ioniq, which you seem to really enjoy, in terms of efficiency and interior space? Thanks in advance and e-regards :)

      37

    • @donatoottawa
      @donatoottawa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TBasianeyes how could it be 37 kWh? 137 watts/km x 33.5 = 245 km range. If the battery is 37 kWh, then a 245 km range = 151 watts/km not 137 watts.

    Bjorn Nyland, Based on your experience with this Leaf 2018 and the e-golf 2017 which one has better efficient and also better interior finished. Thanks from Dominican Republic.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Efficiency is about the same. But e-Golf is smaller. As for interior quality, e-Golf is better. But soundproofing might be better in new Leaf. I have to test the new Leaf on Norwegian roads before my final verdict.

  • @bederhajali
    @bederhajali 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Man I really don't get this. The leaf is weird. I have an ioniq. 2017. I've done more than 250 km when it was below 100k. Now when the weather is good it shows 250km and j can get 230 out of it even though I've put 180k km on it. I use Michelin energy savers in the summer and Nokian tires in the winter. I don't know why the lead gets less than 300 when it has a 40kw battery and I only have a 28.5

  • @talhabinumeed650
    @talhabinumeed650 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ioniq was doing better economy because of slightly less speed (80km/h and 122Wh/km) but in cold weather as well. This was almost ideal temperature and conditions to get the best economy possible which is still impressive.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Ioniq was tested on wet roads and subzero temperatures though. Dry tarmac and summer tires means lower rolling resistance.

    Bit weird though that the Ionic being a 30kWh thrashes a car with 10kWh more...

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't call it trashing. They are equal on range. And Ioniq has more than 30 kWh. Probably about 31 kWh. Leaf has more cargo space than Ioniq. That's one of the reasons why it is less efficient. So you trade higher efficiency in Ioniq for less space.

      @Bjorn, It might be worser in case of the quality, but the 60kWh packs are what makes EVs compatible to the masses (in compact cars). So many reach the 500km goal, with the Bolt...

It would not even allow me to get to the neearest biggest City. Not to mention my vacation family trip each year around 900km. I would have to charge ať least 5x times having extra 7-8h of journey...still seems a long way to go :-/
