    Shortly after the 40kWh Leaf was released I was about to buy one, but I heard a few rumours from earlier purchasers that it overheated very easily. I borrowed a new Leaf from the dealer for a test drive and did a couple of hundred miles to check this out - at night in Scotland, so heat really should not have been an issue! It overheated a little on the first rapid charge, and a lot on the second. RapidGate confirmed! I then bought a secondhand 30kWh Tekna and have not regretted it!

    Pro tip: don’t buy a Leaf if you’ll need to fast charge more than a couple times a year OR if you live in a hot area (like Thailand, although the temperature during this test was not that hot). Absolutely blows my mind that the Leaf will make it through it’s entire product run across multiple generations and multiple batteries without ever having battery cooling, despite the fact that it was a huge problem for them basically since the beginning. Too bad, they would be a decent budget option now if not for the lack of battery temperature management and the Chademo charging.

    I use the Leaf battery in a conversion. It's a bit better vented but still rapid gating. I found disabling regen and cycling between 30-90% rather than 10-70% delays rapid gating because of the higher pack voltage and therefor lower current.

  • @matthewlibanio8227

    So overall, the Leaf is an excellently efficient car that is unfortunately hobbled by it's well known lack of cooling. This actually shows how amazing the Ariya and future Nissan's will be in the future. Leaf is still a good looking car for its age. Well done Bjorn and always fun.

    Thanks - enjoyed the video as usual! We have (in addition to a Tesla Model 3 RWD) an old 2013 24kWh LEAF, and in many ways its a great car. Good reliable build, pretty good features (compared to ICE at least), and really good efficiency (its not far off from my Model 3). While its a great car around the town, the battery is not up to practical longer trips. Its a pity they didn't add active cooling (even if capacity was reduced from 60 kWh to say 50kWh) as the battery also degrades faster than an actively cooled battery. Also as you pointed out the pricing on new cars (ours was a second hand cheap import) doesn't add up against the competition. When, at the end of 2021, I was looking for a longer range EV I priced the 60kWh LEAF here in NZ and it was MORE expensive than a Tesla Model 3 60 kWh LFP! The model 3 was the obvious choice (even thought I had no intention of getting a Tesla at the time!).

    36:00 to me it seems that the graph needs to read from right to left. Looking on the x-axis label would mean that it shows hours passed from now. (now being on the left with 0.0 hrs) Also, the blue was outside temp. So for example 2.8 hrs ago it was 22°C. But 1.4 hrs ago it was 28°C

    You have to be over a certain procent SOC before you can heat up the cabin during rapid charging. On the old 24kw/h it’s at 16% you can start heating the cabin. The weird thing is that you can run the heat during driving below 16% SOC but when you charge it has to be over 16%

    If you are going anywhere on a 100-150 km journey in the leaf I found that the optimum speed is 80km/h. Obviously in hot or cold conditions your range is seriously affected. Any faster and you'll spend more time charging. The leaf is a city/urban eV.

    • @bjornbieber9403
      @bjornbieber9403 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the LEAF it depends on the drive mode. If you enable "ePedal", which is the one pedal driving mode, it will use friction brakes in addition to regen to keep a constant deceleration until standstill. Even with full battery and therefore no regeneration it will always feel the same.
      If that is what you refer to, I think in the more recent Ora Good Cat video Björn found that it only used friction brakes while on cruise control, but that seemed to have been due to older software.

In the Leaf the power to the motor is always shown as a circular bar graph, I guess your Nexon should have something like that. If it has a centre screen, there may be a power flow screen there, too.
      Oh, and if you have a long mountain road near you, you could go uphill until your indicated battery percentage drops by 1 % (or whatever the smallest step is), turn around, go downhill on cruise control and see if the battery SOC goes up again.

    Older LEAF does not heat while charging until you switch on AC.

    I dont get how can the car be so bad at charging. Its not like its the first gen Leaf either. How did they not improve from old model to the newer one is just crazy.

    The Leaf really shows its limitations in these situations. It's a dated design that Nissan has eked out the most for the least modern investment. Nissan may have been at the leading edge of electric vehicles back in the day when Carlos Ghosn was the motivator, but it has sadly fallen behind.

    Why Nissan you don’t improve the leaf, why??? The leaf in this condition is good only in colder temperature

  • @diegomunoz2482
    @diegomunoz2482 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    IMHO Nissan should really solve this issue or stop producing this car. They just totally destroy their reputation :(

  • @AlainSylvestre

    Why Why Nissan dont find a solution to cool the battery ? Put little door to evacuaded heat or something. :)

  • @gelisob
    @gelisob ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Leaf does not belong to countries that get no snow :D
    poor battery, getting toasted like this, will not last long at all.

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  ปีที่แล้ว

      Winter is actually also bad for Leaf since consumption is higher and you need to charge more which introduces more heat. I've already tested rapidgate Leaf in Norwegian winter. Video in my channel.

    • @gelisob
      @gelisob ปีที่แล้ว

      well, winter is "bad" for every car. EV or ICE. But it does not damage leaf battery like heat does.
      I'm sure you can get it to gate doing 1000km but charging at home and needing maybe occasionally 2 fast charges a day - it has been fine and does it max speed.
      Driving at 90 cools it down quite well in colder climate too.

    • @bjornnyland

      Don't trust SoH. Degradation is only 3 % (97 % real SoH).

      my leaf is on 10000miles and the battery still charges to 100%. Maybe it is our weather in the UK!

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Even a battery with 30 % degradation will charge to 100 %. Just because your car charges to 100 % doesn't mean that it hasn't degraded.
