I am a little embarrassed to say that, but I saw this video at least 7 times this day. And I cried each time. What a wonderful music and what a beautiful performance!
Decades ago, around 1980 or so, when my wife and I were living in Oxnard Shores, CA, someone planned a group trip to Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see/hear Spartacus. It was either July or August. The air conditioning failed. But, the Bolshoi did their best. It was excruciatingly hot in our seats. Everyone was sweating. Yet those brilliant dancers and orchestra performed it. I'll NEVER forget their professionalism, courage, and incredible strength. Of course, they struggled but held on. It is a very special moment in our memories. On the way out to our cars, the Bolshoi dancers were exiting to their bus under the watchful eyes of their KGB chaperones. I stopped to let them pass (to their air-conditioned bus!) and started to give them my own applause. And, so did the others in our small knot of audience members. The dancers were smiling, happy, and totally graceful. This scene is an exact replica of that day's Adagio. I wonder if this actual video is from that performance? ...... Fat chance, sure. But, I can dream, can't I?
Of all of the adagios from Spartacus that I have even seen, this is by far the best. Lyudmilla really convinces me that this is the morning after finding her first love. The choreography blends with the music and her performance is perfect. Thanks, my lady.
I doubt you'll ever see such a beautiful blend of music and the portrayal of love anywhere else. The choreography is outstanding and the dancers suburb. I totally agree with the comment of te5rrier.
A lot about the dancers here, but i want to say a word for the Music. Its sweeping and timeless and reflects two lovers caught up in something much greater than themselves, and with wonderful interpretation from the dancers too. Aram Khachaturian tends to be overlooked as a composer but this is Masterpiece.
I think this exquisite choreography by Grigorovich was originally set on his wife, Bessmertnova, and Mukhamedov. For some reason I can't find the video anymore but this performance is almost identical. That famous arabesque lift is glorious and I have never seen anyone but Mukhamedov do it perfectly. Though this ballerina gets very close, Bessmertnova was in flight before she was lifted.
Думаю, что я пересмотрела это адажио в исполнении всех известных балерин, и никто просто не приближается по к Семеняке. Ее танец просто завораживает! Просто смотришь, забываешь обо всем и погружаешься в магию ее танца. Браво!
I heard this music as a soundtrack in a movie from 1968: "Mayerling" (Omar Sharif - Catherine Deneuve) and fell in love with that. Only after 40 years I found out it was by Khachaturian. Great performance! Thanks!
Music, dance interpretation, the complete harmony of 2 souls all exquisitely portrayed. What more can anyone seek to enjoy. Utterly beautiful. Thank god for youtube as I would never have seen this masterpiece. Thank you.
I agree with Zep1083. I first heard this piece about 15 years ago and I, too, cried. The LOVE conveyed in this music is beyond measure, As I am listening and watchin now, I am getting chills from the beauty of it all.
Che bellezza. Bravi. Lo avevo in video cassetta, proprio questo pezzo con Irek e Lyudmilla, quando ero giovincella e a forza di guardarlo avevo fuso il nastro
Poignant and powerful. This is one of the most stunning performances I've every seen. The first time I heard this music was in the movie "Mayerling", and I fell in love with it instantly. Thank you for posting this masterpiece of ballet and music.
My family came from old Russia When it still was an Imperial Country. The Russian soul as exhibited by the glorious music and ballet show a deep feeling so extremely different from the Russian political ideology! Long live the ARTS and ARTISTS!
The first time I heard this theme was in 1968 looking at the movie "Mayerling" performed by Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve. I was fond of this music, but I did not know it was from Kachaturian. Today I know that thanks to You Tube! :) Thank you for this awesome masterpiece! no doubt five stars!
¡¡¡Dos De Las Mas Grandes Estrellas Que Ha Dado El SigloXX!!! Semenyaka, Artista y Bailarina Magnifica, Esta Superlativa; Mukhamedov, En Uno De Sus Papeles Mas Con- sagratorios, Esta, Soberbio. Realmente Una Dupla Magnifica. Para El Disfrute Visual.
This is so beautiful. This is one ballet I just do not know. I've never seen it but of course the music is completely familiar to me. How is it that I've never seen this?!! This is such a beautiful solo scene!
i first heard this tune on the coen brothers film: the hudsucker proxy, with tim robbins, and what a tune, and indeed it was a great film and highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it.
Natalia Bessmertnova, Lyudmilla Semenyaka, Nina Kaptsova. Perfection as Grigorovich's Phrygia. Never to forget Vladimir Vasiliev and Irek Mukhamedov, each the perfect Spartacus in their own way. Many have tried, but only Grigorovich raises Spartacus to the sublime.
This music was in one of the greatest triple X films, 'Caligula",ever made but it is not even close to the sensuality shown in this version by the Bolshoi.
@krychadesign Hi i see you are from australia :) i couldn't find it there but it appears an all-region DVD is available on amazon.co.uk. just type in B0009X24R0 in the search box.
Gittoplo : it's a mistake about year : ludmilla Semenyaka began to dance Spartacus in 1975 for the first time at Bolchoi then in France as Aegyne at Palais des Congrès-Paris , Bessmertnova was Effie , Vladimir Vassiliev-Spartacus . J saw Semenyaka but in 1970 no possible
@@alainspiteri502 If you click on the link then you will see that it says 1970. Ludmila is not listed as part of the cast. Hence the confusion perhaps.

Don’t be embarrassed. I watched over 100 times, over the years… when you combine Khachaturian with Bolshoi Ballet, it will equal perfection.
Love it 💕

A wonderful memory for you. I'm pretty sure this is a recording from the Bolshoi Theatre.

I wholeheartedly agree.
Very beautiful. My favorite is Nina Kaptsova, her extensions are incredible, her emotional involvement too. Second best for me is Anna Nikulina
In agreement!
I agree too. I know nothing about ballet, but the musicality, and dare I say 'ictus', sets it apart.
Yes..... Just beautiful 💕🌹
Khachaturian. Bolshoi Ballet. Russian school of music and dance. Need I say more? Didn’t think so….
Splendid perfection.

Do you what year was this performance?
I could be completely wrong, but isn't this the end of Act II?
Phaedra Miranda You are completely wrong. It is Act III, although there was a briefer pas de deux with these two in Act II.
