Thank you russel from a complete noddy ( beginner) to fly fishing the fly line I have has no loop so have been stressing on how to attach a leader, thanks to this vid I now know fingers crossed I get a bite as I'm going in a weeks time 👍
Russell what a cracking way to attach your fly line used it yesterday landed 4 good pike it's fantastic for flying through the guides of your rod absolutely superb 10/10,
I am new to Fly fishing and this video was sooooo informational, I tried it while watching it the second time and is still holding... keep up the great work and thank you.
newbeeful Glad to be of help. Make sure that you look at the videos for tying a dropper and tying a hook with forceps as this will save you a lot of time and effort setting up. You can pick up a pair for very little outlay. Fly Fishing is a great sport and I am sure you will love it. Good luck!
dont know if you guys gives a shit but if you guys are bored like me during the covid times you can stream all of the new movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my gf for the last weeks :)
A great video, thank you. I'm just looking to start fly fishing. I've been fishing for years, but clearly have a huge amount more to learn. Every day is a school day.
In regards to the second half of the video (leader loop to line loop) you attach the leader to the loop by putting the tag end of the leader through the leader loop. My experience is that the line is straighter if you put the line loop through the leader loop and then the leader tag through the line loop. This forms a square knot and the line to leader connection is straight, as compared to a hinge type knot. Rio's videos as well as other video's I've seen as well as fly shops advice suggest this way to attach leaders.
Al Hunter , Mad River outfitters also say the “right way” is to put the line loop through the leader loop as the formed hinge knot formed could cut through the leader. That said how many times as that actually happened?! I’m a noobie at fly fishing so absolutely lack any experience or real knowledge, but like many things in the sport of fly fishing and life in general, one mans meat is another mans poison!! The line first seems to work for me!
@@clivenewton7609 The correct way is "Line through leader, then leader through line". That forms a straight even "Handshake Knot" or loop to loop knot.
My floating line / leader is tied as shown. It holds good. My question is, is there some way to prevent the fly line from sinking for a foot or two. I thought to maybe soak that end of the fly line in melted wax. Is that OK or is there some better way? Thanks
Fantastic knot and demonstration! Could the same knot be used to add a loop of 20 or 30 lb Dacron backing to the back end of my fly line? Many of my reels are rigged with loops in my backing to make changing fly lines easier but not every fly line I have has a nice welded loop.
hi eric, i am waiting for my new salmon line to arrive in scotland, a rio in touch scandi which does'nt have a welded loop at the back end, i have been watching many videos on how to make a welded loop, it is as easy and strong as russells knot on here, worth checking out some of the many videos, i have found the best one to be an american guy, his site is 'hookedforlifeca' 👍
Russell, interesting... I put the flyline loop through the leader loop and the figure 8 doesn't start off folded over, it just slides into an 8. Gosh, many ways to do it I guess. Thank you so much great video. Great fishing to you my friend. We have entered the barbel season and there's nothing like fishing them with a fly rod. Uff love it !!
What you are using to create your loop is basically a variation of the UNI KNOT and you can use that same uni knot principle to tie the fluorocarbon to the fly line directly without using the loop.
I prefer having a loop than tying a leader directly to the fly line. I mostly use streamers here, and sometimes I need to attach a sinking tip to adjust to the water depth. Having a loop really makes it easier to change leader to sinking tip, and vice versa.
Good tutorial. Almost looks a bit like a uni knot type connection. I’m not a fan of braided loops myself especially when fishing dries so when my welded loop runs its course I tend to use a nail knot with a 4” length of 15-20lb mono onto my line and simply tie a perfection loop at the end of that, thus creating a perfection loop to perfection loop connection. Any thoughts on that method? I used to tie a straight nail knot to my line but changing leaders so frequently unfortunately causes a loss of an inch or more each time to my lines, not exactly conservative for the fly line when using a WF line.
Top video Russell, just the ticket. I am just trying to tie my leader what pound fluro could I use up to for sea fishing on an 8 weight line? thanks again I will keep and out for more videos.
The size does not matter too much Gerard, I usually red up with a loop about three inches long. So long as you can easily attach your leader, it will be fine.
I did. Lost a fish because of that. So now I strip the coating off before making this loop, leaving 3 cm of exposed braided core at the end. I then knot the core to make a small bulge right at where it is exposed to prevent the loop knot from slipping off. To finish it off, I cover it with shrink tube. Note: I use a cheap fly line (less than US$ 10), so maybe that's why the coating got off.
Hey bud, I tried this with 16# fluro on an intermediate cold water running line and it literally stripped the clear top goat off the inside core during a shock test I perform on all of my finished knots. Did I do something wrong or is this not for all types of lines?
I am not sure what you mean. If the line the knot was attached to failed the knot must have held? A shock test will always fail at the weakest point. It may be that the knot needed to be a little tighter on the line so as to apply more friction on the core.
I use 10lb fluorocarbon line Jeff. You can make the loop as long or short as you wish. If you make it too small you may have more difficulty connecting the leader to it.
+Carlos Dingevan Hello Carlos. Tie the knot loosely and then work the knot backwards starting at the loop. So push the loop back into the knot until it is roughly the length you want and then work the slack back through the knot. It is very difficult to explain what I mean, but very easy to do if the knot is loose. I hope this helps.
+Perry Jones Hi Perry, I am an a bit of a Neanderthal when it comes to fishing and I use 10lb fluorocarbon. It does not seem to make a difference to my catch rate. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Joakim Dahl I have not had a problem with mine. You could seal it with superglue if you wanted to, but the knot seems to do the same thing if it is tightened enough.
+Sam Gritzke Hi Sam. The loop on the end of your fly line is what you attach your leader to. Watch the video through to the end, I demonstrate a very quick and easy way to attach the leader to the loop which explains it all. I hope this helps! :-)
The leader is a long"clear" stretch of tapered line that leads to the tippet which attaches to the fly. Some times a long leader is necessary if the water is clear or still or if the fish are spooky. I can tell you I personally never use a nine foot leader. I also don't waste money on tapered leaders from the store I just use different lbs test line and knot them. My rule is usually the length of the rod is too long for the leader because the line ends up inside the guides. For trout I use 7.5 foot rod most of the time and about 7 foot leader. Saltwater I use short 5 foot leaders because of needing more weight to throw the big flies. Good luck
Absolutely love this not. I'm a new fly fisherman and how to connect my leader to my fly line always puzzled me. The Simplicity of this not fast easy and strong absolutely love it

Yes, the same knot without doubling up the line to make a loop. Thank you for sharing that information. :-)

Could I use heavy mono like 20 or 25 lb maxima? I plan on using 15 flouro for my tippet.
Yes Josh, the knot will be fine.
If you use flouro I would use all flouro or vice versa. My experience is that knots slip when using mono and flouro
What do you call the method/knot for tying a loop to the fly line (part 1 in your video)?
Hello Björn, the knot is a Gray's Loop.
Hey bud, I tried this with 16# fluro on an intermediate cold water running line and it literally stripped the clear top goat off the inside core during a shock test I perform on all of my finished knots. Did I do something wrong or is this not for all types of lines?
