The US Has a Teacher Shortage - Here’s How To Fix It | Randy Seriguchi Jr. | TED

  • How much should we invest in teachers, and what should new investment actually involve? Education innovator Randy Seriguchi Jr. suggests the US should create a "G.I. Bill" for teachers, with a particular emphasis on uplifting Black male professionals. He shares a model of this idea in action through community partnerships in San Francisco, which provide aspiring teachers with graduate school tuition, subsidized housing, personalized fit assessments and more. "If we truly want to elevate this profession to inspire new, diverse talent to join us, we have to improve both the personal and professional experiences associated with teaching," says Seriguchi.

I’ve been a teacher for over 2 decades & usually love my job. Just today I got an accusatory email from a parent saying that I was “not professional” to expect their 17 year old advocate for themselves.
Toxic parenting is a major problem.

Plenty of professionals have to deal with worse challenges than that. But they are paid enough to justify it. Increase average teacher salaries by 50% and there will be no teacher shortages. Guaranteed.

Quite often parents expect things about their children which are wrong.
Then there are those who don't know the laws pertaining to the relationship between them. Obviously that is different from one country to another but they can be dissociated from their country.

A salary which would provide us with enough income to rent in the communities we serve instead of commuting over an hour each way would take the edge off . BUT it's not just the parents. It's the lack of accountability for student behavior which has gotten much worse , even before the pandemic. I have been in the education field for 30+ years in Texas. Our problems here (in my opinion)-1) The people who make decisions for us (our governor and legislators) have never taught. 2) Our administrators only look at test scores, forgetting each student is different with different learning modalities. 3) Overcrowded classrooms- when you get 30+ kiddoes in a classroom they are not learning 4) Not a lot of parental support- Parents do not want you calling them about their kiddoes behavior 5) When the kiddoes do not do their classwork and have alphabets behind them (LD, ADHD, ADD,etc) parents expect you to give their kids a "pass" unfortunately...usually. Or they say you are not following the IEP. 6) Teachers are overworked- usually given something to do that was due yesterday 7) Discipline is an issue- forget requiring students to behave. They don't. 8) Students DO NOT NEED A CELL PHONE AT SCHOOL- I am sorry, but they spend their time looking at Tik Toks, videos, games, etc and teachers are constantly saying "Put the phone away".. If the student does not, and the teacher asks for the phone the students tell them 'You are not taking my phone" and will fight about it. The parents will say, "You should not have taken their phone'. 9) Extra responsibilities- a teacher did not come in, so they move all that teachers students to your classroom for the day 10) Teaching is a "thankless job" and it can be a 'rewarding job". I have been in this field 30+ years as a bilingual-ESL Spanish teacher. I have been touched emotionally by my families and their children. I love working with immigrants as they understand the value of an education. I don't feel our American students understand the value of an education. Most American children I have worked with come in the classroom "gooing" off. My immigrant students never did that. Now, because I am strict and structured once I set the parameters down my American students get on my page. They still act "goofy" but in other classrooms, not in mine. Education has value. If all students can understand this concept our American system would be a whole lot better (in my opinion) 11) No respect for teachers and lastly 12) Low pay. This is why there is a teacher shortage in Texas, so I imagine it is the same in all parts of the USA. It takes a really special person to decide to teach- To be a bilingual-ESL teacher, to be a Special Education teacher, to be an Art teacher, to be a Music/Orchestra/Band teacher, to be a Math teacher (make sure your children know the multiplication table by rote memorization by 3rd grade) and to be an ordinary- everyday teacher. We are educators. Treat us as such. Get out and involve yourself in your childs life- volunteer at their school. See what is going on daily. Keep a relationship with your child's teachers. Then maybe, just maybe we will not have a shortage.

Ask most people in my building, and they will tell you pay is NOT the number 1 problem. Sure, pay could be better, but that pales into comparison with the unchecked student behaviors, parents who do not care, and unreasonable classroom expectations. Is it really my fault Little Johnny cannot pass the state assessment when he roams the hallways or is absent 80% of the time? Admin is supposed to support teachers, but most of the time the relationship is adversarial. They give these kids no consequences, and then blame us for poor classroom management when they do a walkthrough and the kids are off the chain. Pay is not the biggest problem. It's the stress.

Exactly. And in northeastern states, I’ve seen teachers come to school in Teslas. To me, the pay is not the MAIN issue, at least not up here. The biggest issue for me is the administration. The kids have problems, yes, but that’s to be expected especially in urban education. I had kids that came from drug addicted parents, etc. They needed support. But the word you used “adversarial” to describe the administration is right on the money. They don’t support teachers.

While I appreciate his efforts in wanting to recruit black male teachers (certainly no qualms there), I thought he was going to talk about the teacher shortage in general. As a veteran teacher (17 yrs in secondary) in one of the bottom 5 performing school districts in America, I can say that there’s more than just one or two reasons why there is a shortage. It’s a combination of reasons that no amount of money can fix. Don’t get me wrong, money can help in certain neighborhoods or districts, but always throwing more money or the latest gadget or the teaching method isn’t going to fix the problem of good qualified teachers leaving the profession.
In my personal opinion, the biggest ways to turn this teaching shortage around is to boot out the idea that politicians or other higher ups with little to no experience in the classroom should be making decisions about teaching. Leave the (qualified) teachers alone and let them teach!!! We know a ****ton more about what our students actually need than some suit in an office.
Also, let us discipline. I’m not lobbying to bring back the paddle… though I wouldn’t entirely oppose it either- anyway, my school district makes it so difficult to discipline a kid, giving them so many “chances”, that kids just don’t care anymore. They’ll do whatever they want because all they’ll get is a slap on the wrist; they take that experience into life and it just screws up the kid as well as society.
Get rid of standardized testing. Seriously, outside of a one time test to see how schools are doing, any other testing has to go. It’s absolutely ridiculous and it wastes time that should go to connecting with students and helping them learn.
You wanna know why teachers are leaving? Because it’s generally not a respected profession anymore. With students, parents, and the higher ups. Society has taken something I love to do and has 💩all over it.

If it is anything like the crisis in the UK, the main reasons tend to be workload, performance management pressures, work-life imbalance, low pay, extra responsibilities beyond simply educating (dealing with increasing levels of mental health and poverty and the impact these have on discipline and physical health), and not having sufficient resources to deal with the extra responsibilities placed upon teachers. This is not an exhaustive list, there are many other issues, but I find these are some of the main drivers of the teaching crisis in the UK. 'Teaching in England Post-1988 - Reflections and Career Histories' by Prof Joan Woodhouse is a must read- it provides insights into why some teachers have made a long term career of teaching whilst many of their colleagues have left the profession, hence the teacher retention crisis currently in the UK.

When I taught in China, I taught a full curriculum (Math, ELA, Science . . . ) to the same group of kids for six years. I got them in 1st grade and followed them through their sixth grade (as did their Chinese teacher). In grade 1, the kids are fun and funny and soaked up knowledge like a sponge. There were still bad behaviors, but they are more easily addressed when younger (for the most part). By the time we hit 4th grade, the kids knew me well and I knew them well. I could adjust my teaching style to match each individual. I knew each student's individual strengths and weaknesses. When they got to the more troublesome 5th and 6th grade, they knew what kind of "mischief" was allowed and what was not. I had a couple of students who, for six years, would not do their assigned work and made low scores. I adjusted their workload and gave them more remedial sort of work. I worked with them individually and discussed issues with their parents, yet they wouldn't budge. Luckily, they weren't the sort of students who caused trouble and disrupted class and their classmates seemed to get along well with them. They just didn't care about school (they were the same in their Chinese classes, by the way). However, for the most part, the students thrived and learned English well and had awesome scores and growth throughout. Those were some of my best teaching years. Here in the USA? Not so much.

Therefore the Gao Kao test weeds out those that do not behave or perform. We in America should learn from this. I was a teacher for 5 years. Loved the work. I could not afford to stay in the field. Making less than $30,000/yr (before tax) just wasn't tenable. Granted that was a private school. At the time, teachers in the public districts had a median salary around the 45k-range, now it's about 53k. With all of the inflation that has taken hold since then, the pay jump over time really only tracks the inflation, doesn't exceed it.
Ultimately, I switched careers. I'm still in education, but I already exceed the median salary of the public school positions I mentioned previously. It's a shame, because I had a great rapport with my kids, but I just couldn't swing it as a recent college grad trying to start a life. Many people will need to do what I did. If you get offered a job with better compensation, superior benefits, better work-life-balance, and a pathway to advancement while staying in education? It's hard to say "no" to that.

If you want more teachers, improve the quality of the job. There are a few things we can do: 1) We need kids who are better behaved and have more discipline. We need more parental involvement (and parents who back the teachers); 3) put most of the ever increasing administrative pool back into the classroom; 4) more prep time during the work day (to many teachers, especially new teachers, spend 5 hours a night preparing for the next days classes.

The problem can be fixed without increased funding. Primarily we need a student-to-teacher pipeline. The best way to do this is to have the kid never leave the school. The kid takes classes during his/her junior senior year in the subject they want to teach (as college credits), then they do a two year student teaching (they would get paid), and then have a two year duo-teaching fellowhip until they get licensed. Important: they would never leave the school/district.

Kids can’t even go to school because all of the emotional distress they’re having. Those numbers are growing - there are so many outlying issues /salaries and appreciation being at the top. Parents go in and fight with these teachers instead of holding kids accountable - so yes it is the parents but please open your mind and see it’s more than that

In the United States, public education is mostly funded by the faulty property tax system. in poor communities, with many vacancies and very little commercial development, there’s no funding for teachers or decent schools. And, the rich communities complain their taxes are too high and are not about to share any of their property tax distribution with schools from poorer communities that desperately need the funds. .

The classroom supplies need to meet the social economic of the area in which the school is located. In poor neighborhoods teachers need to be giving three to four times the amount of money for supplies. Teachers need to be paid the same as a computer programmers, system analysts, computer engineers, and engineers. Until we compensate teachers correctly and give them adequate supplies and materials, we are going to have a Teacher shortage problem.

The justification for making this racial was unconvincing. All teachers need help, but we have to shift cultural values and make parents teach their rotten crotch droppings to value an education and to show some respect.

The HR people in those school districts are not the nicest people. And if you're the teacher of the year in Arizona you still cannot teach California without a bunch of red tape. So if you're going to be teacher in a rich or poor district make darn sure you'll be in that state for the rest of your teaching career otherwise God help you. There is implicit bias in AI because those that are training AI models are biased. AI should not be meant to replace humans but rather support tasks that humans aren't as good at but AI is. We are a long ways away from AI being sufficient to tech a classroom of children given issues like privacy and empathy. Not saying it's impossible but other professions are likely going to be impacted first because of the implications it would bring to the field. More likely administrative work in a school would be replaced before teachers by AI.

I taught for 30 years. America doesn't value teachers. They value celebrities. They will go to great lengths to see a concert, football game, baseball game etc. They will go crazy to get a celebrity's autograph and picture. But America treats teachers like dirt. In general, with are treated with disrespect by parents, administrators and students and expected to take it. We aren't permitted to make decisions involving education or teaching even though we are the ones in the classroom. We use our own salary to buy supplies we should already have. And as far as money, the same parents who will spend thousands to attend basketball and football games or concerts, will vote down teacher pay raises.
