  • Beautiful Ancient Mahalaxmi Temple Bandora Goa of 12th Century
This is one of our ancient Kuladevata Temples. When Lord Parashuram had invited our forefathers from Trihotrapura, they had come down to Goa with their deities of daily worship, which later became the Kulaswamis. Prominent among them were Shri Magirish Mahadev (popularly known as Shri Mangesh), Shri Mahalakshmi, Shri Mahalasa, Shri Shantadurga, Shri Nagesh and Shri Saptakotishwar. They were installed in different parts of Goa and when Shri Nagesh was installed in Bandiwade, Ponda it was believed that close to it, Shri Mahalakshmi temple was erected. Therefore this temple too was saved from Portuguese atrocities as it was outside their domain. This is evidenced by a Shilalekh of the year Saka 1335 (1413 A.D.) found in the wall of Shri Nagesh temple wherein a mention of both the temples is made in respect of certain gifts made to the temples.
The village of Bandode or Bandivade is the location of a number of temples among which is the large and beautiful temple of Goddess Mahalaxmi. Bandode is approximately 28 kms from the capital city of Panaji, off the main road to Ponda, at Farmagudi.
The temple has been in existence since at least the year 1413, when information about the rituals of the temple is found on stone plaques carved during the reign of Nanjan Gosavi Pratihast over Goa.
However, there was another temple of Mahalaxmi in the fifteenth century in the town of Colva in Salcette. As is the case with most Hindu deities in Goa, the idol of Mahalaxmi from this temple was also smuggled away in the middle of the night to avoid persecution during the Portuguese Inquisition era of the sixteenth century.
The two devotees Safto and Fato, who took away the idol in a trunk and first took her to the town of Talauli near Ponda. Till today, the people of this village worship the sign of the feet of the goddess. The idol brought from Colva was then taken to Bandode and installed along with the existing idol.
So today there are two idols of Mahalaxmi in the temple premises, along with other deities such as Shri Ravalnath, Shri Baleshwar, Shri Narayan Purush and interestingly also idols of the two devotees i.e. Safto and Fato who managed to save the Goddess from Colva.
The second Goddess Mahalaxmi from Colva is taken out in a procession only once a year on the auspicious day of Ramnavmi when she is taken around in a palakhi (palanquin) and a chariot.
On the second day of this festival, both the idols are taken out in one chariot to be paraded in a huge procession. The main idol of the Goddess Mahalaxmi is also taken out during the festival of Mahashivratri, on a chariot carried on the shoulders of devotees.

Who is Maha Lakshmi Devi. According to Tantra it is Durga same in Shaivism. Does Vaishnavism refer to Shree Lakshmi as Mahalaxmi… Then isn't it a different deity from the Supreme Goddess Durga?
There are 3 Mahalakshmis, one is Viṣhṇupatni other is Shivapatni and third is Rajsik Mahalakshmi of Saptashati
      In Lakṣmī Gāyatrī:-
      ॐ श्री महालक्ष्म्यै च विद्महे विष्णुपत्न्यै च धीमहि। तन्नो लक्ष्मी प्रचोदयात्॥
      Mahalakshmi cha…Viṣṇupatni cha dhimahi…
Above refers Mahalaxmi as Vishnu Patni. Consort of Lord Vishnu
      In Shivapurana
      तस्याङ्कमण्डलारूढा शक्तिमाहेश्वरी परा। महालक्ष्मीरिति ख्याता श्यामा सर्वमनोहरा ॥
The Shakti of Maheshwar(Shiva) sitting on his Lap, of dark complexion is called Mahalakshmi
So here it’s clear that Mahalakshmi can also be a name for Shiva Patni
Durga has been portrayed as Narayani in vaishnavism and in vishnukranta tantra.
whether you call her Lakshmi or Mahalakshmi, she’s the wife of God Vishnu and Maa Mahalakshmi is shakti swaroopa who is one of the three main swaroopas (other two are Mahakali and Mahasaraswati) of the supreme goddess Maa Adishakti Jagat Janani Jagadamba Durga.
Lakshmi or Sri Devi is the consort of Vishnu. She is the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Wealth includes nobler values of life, power of mind and intellect, moral, and ethical qualities which constitutes the spiritual wealth. The eight forms of Lakshmi, called Ashta-Lakshmi are: Santhanalakshmi (wealth of progeny), Gajalakshmi (wealth of animals), Dhanalakshmi (wealth of gold and other material wealth), Dhaanyalakshmi (wealth of food grains), Veeralakshmi (wealth of valor), Vijayalaksmi (wealth of victories and success), Mahalakshmi (wealth of greatness) and Aadhilakshmi.
Yes, Durga is considered a form of Lakshmi in the Narada Purana. In the Garuda and Vishnu Puranas, Lakshmi is identified with three forms, including Durga, and is considered Prakriti (Mahalakshmi). The Lakshmi Tantra and other Pancharatra texts also identify Durga as one of Lakshmi's forms, and say that Lakshmi acquired the name Durga after killing the demon Durgamasura.
In our Mahalaxmi Temple Goa Bandora
Mahalaxmi is the Goddess of power and strength and is believed to be an incarnation of ‘Adishakti’-the supreme form of power and energy. The Shaktas- worshippers of Shakti cult, among the Saraswats, worshipped Adishakti in the form of the linga.
Many accept Mahalaxmi as Pallavi, their supporting deity, who is believed to have been released when the gods and demons were churning the ocean for amrita the nectar of immortality. The Saraswats, at the time of their arrival in Goa , were worshippers of ‘Shiva-Shakti’- Shiva being represented by the ‘Linga’, and Shakti as the Goddess. Thus Shri Mahalaxmi was their Goddess and has been worshipped by the Shilahara rulers (750-1030 A.D.) and also the Kadamba Kings of Goa. This peaceful or Satvika form of devi that shows in the idol at this temple has a unique feature- that she wears Linga on her head.
In addition to the black granite stone idol that we can see now, there was also an Utsava idol made of ‘panchloha’ (five metals). It is said that during the Portuguese inquisition in 1557, two non-Brahmins, Satto and Phato, carried the Utsava idol in a box, to save it from the rage of the Portuguese who already had then destroyed the granite idol. Satto and Phato travelled by boat along the Arabian Sea, crossed the Rasai River and reached Talawal or Durbat in Atrunja, and handed over the Utsava idol to the Bhandiwade Mahalaxmi Temple . As a reward, Satto and Phato were given two balls of rice after the midday mahapuja under the instruction from the goddess to the temple management. This practice is still carried out at a small hut constructed (near the temple) in memory of these two devotees
