Brief Case, good morning 🌅,very busy, this morning! I'll be back!! Already know, 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟,! I'm sorry!
I already belong to Audible. I’m sorry. Lol Are you on Patreon, I cannot find a link.
William Woodgate is one of NZs most tragic cases. Hes dubbed "the child killer Picton refused to hang
Hi, Brief Case! Now, I am watching! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💚💚
I really enjoy Audio Books played 200+ and really enjoying your Cases Caz UK
I love the phrase "Found herself Pregnant" lol Oh look what I found in my belly this morning... Don't you hate when that happens.
“Ah shit not again what the hell”
In the Uk we also use the phrase 'fell pregnant' but I would get so many comments about it I decided not to use it amymore
I do declare! Just what in the world is going on here?! 😄
@@BriefCaseOfficial Most definitely, I know a few people that seem to "fall " quite often, like, how clumsy can one person be? 😳😂
This keeps happening to my daughter. Lol!
I know that kind of life, where you're *poor* but not poor ENOUGH to get HELP. It's the worst feeling in the world, especially if you've got dependants.
The magistrate denied assistance because she took good care of her children who appeared clean and well fed; how ridiculous is that!! Who denies a sick single mother of 3 help because she takes good care of them? What a sad situation.
Narrow-minded people in positions of power passing judgement, literally in this case. During that time period she was screwed😭💔
@@oliviagreen7423 Absolutely.
Probably because she Wasn't low class, and he was Jumped up!
The magistrate was a heartless POS. If she had the help she needed, things would be different. 😥
@@Eclipse503 Yes, things were truly💩 for the poor, Jewish, other ethnic minorities then. Social health care and other programs desperately needed, basic human rights so society could improve as a whole. I commend England, UK for implementing social health care, as an American I'm enraged we can't have that😭 I don't believe I've ever heard someone say it should be done away with, I've just heard a lot of frustration that it's underfunded. Haven't heard Canadians complain much at all, they must have more funding(or maybe I just haven't talked to the ones that are very unhappy)
If only she’d been offered some assistance. How cruel of the magistrate to conclude that because her children were clean and well cared for that she didn’t need it. Such horrible circumstances.
“Stop trying to be a good mom so hard, then we will help you? You’re not failing enough?”
So cruel and tragic
Women weren’t valued at all back then or even now. When I hear people going on about unmarried mothers.’’it always makes me think what about the unmarried father’s’’ what about them. There just getting on with there life making other babies to theses terrible unmarried mothers. I’m not saying all men are like that but the ones that are are getting away with the stigma of being an unmarried and an un providing parents.
Hi,I agree, one would think that because her children were clean&fed,a magistrate would use common sense &help her financially.
Men weren't that much involved with raising their own children, so they had no idea what it involved & how much it cost. That was left to the servants and their wives. They weren't interested nor concerned. Begging on the streets was common then, as it is now.
All I want is all the Audible books reads by Brief Case. Make that happen. Chop chop.
Say "please". Ha ha.
But why? Does he say? Every phrase? As a question? They aren't? Questions?
Phoebe definitely lived a hardscrabble life, but that doesn't excuse her murdering innocent baby Flossie. Thanks for the upload.
The system failed Mrs Veitch..I think she had a nervous break down and she blamed her youngest for what she was going through in life..sad story 😥
Making the perpetrator the victim seems to be the hip thing to do nowadays.
@@peopleskarmasquad1042 exactly! This whole thread is filled with sympathizers of a child killer. There is absolutely no accountability attached to Phoebe. Nowhere did they ever state she was raped so she engaged in consensual sex and had kid after kid especially unmarried most women those years knew what the consequences were of not being married and having kids. It sounds harsh but taking a modern moral code almost absolves her of any accountability. She just happens to kill the one child what about the rest? It the problem was caring for them. She was a 4 year old probably needed less that the elder kids. Everyone talking about she didn't get help but she chose to keep the kids even when she had the option of putting them up for adoption. That is a choice!
When we are free we are accountable. We are not free.
@@snarfington I am not free. I am expensive
That doesn’t excuse her for what she did. She killed her child. She’s garbage.
Sad sad sad. If it was syphilis, it could well have affected her sanity. Sending a fourteen year old girl to work in her "uncle's" hotel. Bad start.
Very.
It was very hard in those days......
It amazes me that she was refused help from the magistrate because her children looked "clean and well cared for". Should they have been dirty and neglected? Idk, that just surprised me.
I've heard of people in my lifetime who were down in their luck, needed assistance and were denied because their kids were dressed nicely and they had a clean house or they lived in a nice zip code.
I'm sure if they had been he'd have used that as an excuse to take them away and then put them in an orphanage or sold them off.
yeah they prefer people they can totally demoralize. The same people would probably say 'no matter how poor you are you can keep your kids and home clean.' So sad.
Phoebe lived a deprived, impoverished life but that's no excuse to murder a baby. RIP little Flossie.
Thanks, BC! Stay safe out there.
EXACTLY! All these sympathetic commenters. I know Phoebe suffered, but all you have to do is imagine what it would take to look at a 4 year old and throw them in a river, and know she was a damn psychopath.
@@ev5837 the children were reportedly well fed. Furthermore, if it was a mercy killing, why would you throw a little kid into ice cold water, where they would be absolutely terrified? Not exactly a quick, easy, or painless death. Just imagine what it would take. Nobody capable of normal emotions could look at a 4 yr old child and physically do that to them. Sorry, but minimizing a baby murder is a bit much.
Exactly this, I can’t believe how many people are being sympathetic to the person that chose to murder a little child.
Imagine having an autoimmune disease like Lupus in the 19th century. Poor Phoebe and Flossie. Thank you BC. 💼🙏🏼💜💜
She killed a child and your saying poor phoebe? I have no doubt she killed the child and likely killed her cause she felt the child of color she had was disposable and possibly would have done again when she felt she couldn’t feed another mouth
Or something like ALS or MS😢 My grandmother began developing RA in the late 1950s, and even then there wasn't many treatment options. She took aspirin for years until she developed a bleeding ulcer and almost died😖 I always felt terrible for her seeing her twisted fingers and toes💯 Glad my Papa was a good man, always took care of her along with the rest of the fam, very happy she at least had that🙏
@@lovelydiva06 I don't know if I misunderstood the video or if I was distracted during a key part of the video, but am I the only one who was under the impression that it was all circumstantial?? I finished the video with the impression that it was an accident and she was scared out of her mind (and wracked with guilt). She shouldn't have accused the ex-partner, though. That was eff-ed up. It's one thing to lose a child, it's another to be accused of killing the child.
@@jamyDodger I agree she loved Flossie. I can't imagine not loving my own child (and I've never had any, just pets that I love like children). The part about her dressing her boy more nicely than her daughter is BS because she previously got turned down for government assistance due to her children being well-kept. If she did play favourites, it was likely based on gender (I hate to say this but sometimes mothers are like that).
Extremely unfair and absolutely tragic. People to realize that her reaction would have been the same if the story about her ex-lover showing up and killing the child because he couldn't take her with him was true? There were no Witnesses and no evidence to him being there, but there were no Witnesses or evidence to him being not there either. Circumstantial is right.
I honestly think she blamed her daughter for her situation and I really don't have sympathy for her if that's the case. Poor Flossy, rest in peace little one.
As someone who has lupus I am amazed that she survived child birth once let alone three times. Lupus is a cruel condition to live with and without a doubt she did so well to get to the age she was, if it can't be controlled with extremely strong medication it can be life threating.
Did not think they knew about Lupas back then😪some people's lives are so harsh.
That surprised me too.
They probably knew about lupus though...sigh
No matter how hard your life is, there has to be better options than murdering your own child. If she did it so there was one less person to feed, why didn’t she try to get the kids adopted or something? I feel sad for those poor children.
The girl might have died naturally and Phoebe panicked. You don't exactly think well when stressed, malnourished and faced with something so overwhelming.
Understand times back then were tough and extremely unbearable for an unwed woman with child(ren).
You act like times back then we’re the same as now lol
Flossy was a biracial child. Not many people at the time would have been clamoring to adopt her.

Poor woman & her children😔. She tried so hard. That governor who denied her desperate plea for help, should’ve been sorely ashamed! She couldn’t have been more than 20-21 yrs old & her life was ending due to her illness.

What a very sad case... I wonder where her other children ended up?? 💔☹️
In a horrible orphanage. Unadoptable because of who their mother was.
@@debshaw680 I hope not...☹️😟🤪😭
When I listen to these old cases I always wonder about the actual home life and day to day happenings of the children and family. I was excited to hear what the 7 year old would say, but I agree he was pretty young to testify. It would have given a closer look into the home situation and maybe painted a better picture into what happened. Seemed like the poor little girl was just outcast and unwanted because she was mixed and disposable in her mothers eyes. 😢 You always pick the most interesting stories. Thank you. 😉❤️
So she was 14 when 1st pregnant, could have been a result of 'forced attentions' as they used to say from an older man of authority preying on the low and vulnerable. What I struggle to understand is Herbert was unharmed and if she wanted to rid herself of the burden of raising kids why only Flossie? I also agree with many, Im thinking more STD for her lupus like symptoms. All round awful anyway, enjoy the rest of your Bank Holiday Brits!
Perhaps, she thought her chances of remarriage were better if she just had 2 white Children and not a biracial 4 year old.
Blamed the girl for the husband running off. Probably thought if you weren't born my husband would still be here. Obviously it was her own fault he left as she was a cheat sleeping around.
I was also thinking STD!
I did wonder if dear Uncle could have been the eldest's father...
If she was arrested at the end of February and gave birth in October she must've become pregnant in the weeks leading up to her arrest. It sounds like she may have needed to supplement her income via prostitution, especially working in a hotel, but would often become pregnant with another mouth to feed, making it a vicious circle. I also wonder if she was suffering with syphilis instead of lupus. How much difference things now available for purchase at the corner drug store or for free from women's clinics, like oral birth control or a box of condoms, could have made her life! I've never been more grateful to be able to pick up a 90 day supply of oral contraceptives for under $7.
I had a friend you suffered from lupus, and I did a lot of reading about it so I wouldn't have to ask her questions all the time, and it does affect the tissue in the ears, causing ringing and hearing loss, it also will cause lesions on the tissue of the nose, inside the mouth, like painful little ulcers, no danger in them to the person with lupus or anyone around them but, needs to be treated if at all possible, now of course, it's common practice, but simply because they're so painful it definitely needs treated. But nothing horrible like syphilis, distinct difference, one is quite disgusting, and the other, from lupus is like a cold sore in places besides the mouth. Nothing runs out of these like with syphilis. I made myself nauseous talking about the syphilis part..I'll stop on that note..😉
Yeah, 'cause only prostitutes can get pregnant.
I can do it for less than $7, listen:
" NO! "
@pickles Never known a cat need contraception before
There were sheep skin condoms and they even used half of a lemon hollowed out as a diaphragm. There have always been ways to not get pregnant, but men don’t like to wear condoms.
Wonderful yet again, I knew my biscuits and gravy was missing something this morning, Brief Case part of any complete southern American breakfast! Outstanding as always sir.
Biscuits and grave, sounds interesting
@@BriefCaseOfficial yes, I’ve got visions of gravy poured on a hobnob or chocolate digestive! (Of course those references will mean nothing to your American viewers!).
Biscuits and gravy are the best things ever, BC!
A good southern biscuit starts with flour, buttermilk and a lot of butter, with more butter brushed on as it bakes.
The gravy is a good, thick, cream based gravy with lots of black pepper and sometimes some spicy ground sausage. Goes great with bacon, ham or sausage, as well as eggs and grits.
Add a cup of coffee that you can stand a spoon up in, and you've got a breakfast that I'll stand up against beans and toast any day! 😉
Eta- and they are so filling thqt you won't even have room for a digestive after! 😄
@@nobody8328 absolute best comment I've ever seen on B&G iv ever read. God bless you and yours.

What a horrifically sad life she had. Poor, uneducated women had little recourse in those days. And she asked for help and was turned down. Which I am surmising happened often.
Poor, uneducated single mothers still have it hard on our contemporary times.
Poor, uneducated men had it rough too. They weren’t living a life of luxury and privilege
@@j.h-j5j they get subsidies from the government, help from crisis centers, and court mandated child support in which the man if he doesn’t pay goes to jail.
The single mother rate in the West is so high because single mothers get so much support that it’s damn near incentivized.

Also society:
“You’re disgusting for having failed”.
Meanwhile the man who abandoned his family? No repercussions.
What a sad time they lived in. My heart always skips a beat when I hear stories of young (often unwilling) mothers who found themselves forced or tricked into sex with the males who then ran off to the next conquest, leaving them shamed, penniless, and terribly alone.
Does it skip a beat for the ones who CHOOSE to make poor choices and are the architects of their misfortune? I guess women are always "tricked" or "forced" in to sex because they could not possibly engage in such conduct willingly. No sexism in that thinking.
@@dougtaylor2803 I am a survivor of 3 attackers. I did not put myself into ANY position to be assaulted by any of them. The first one was when I was a 10 year old. You'll forgive my mistrust, if you have a shred of decency.
It happens today too. Men fathering children and running off as soon as responsibility hits. Doug Taylor, yes women are often willing participants, but it's not so easy for us to run away from the children we carry. What a sad story ! Some people think that in the old times were better, in fact life was even more cruel, for unwed mothers, for the poor. They could expect very little help, or no help at all...
The past is the worst

@@douglasbubbletrousers4763 I totally agree ! In this terribly sad story, all the blame was put upon Phoebe. And the father of this poor Child got away scott free
Poor little Flossy she paid for her mother’s mistake with her life. I know people with lupus and their noses aren’t damaged, I think she had an STD and that effected her face
Do a Google image search for lupus on nose...Don’t get me wrong she definitely may have had an STI but you can’t compare the symptoms of modern people with lupus when they have access to modern medicine and treatments to people back then.
I had a pt that had lupus and she use to get mouth and nose sores, especially if she had a cold or allergies or if she became over emotional, crying and such, it would for some reason trigger nose sores, they didn’t look anything like an std, more like hives or flea bites but she said the ones inside her nose were extremely uncomfortable, not painful but very uncomfortable!!
My mother has lupus and she has awful issues with her nose and throat open sores and rashes all the time god forbid if she wasn’t so careful and aware of her hygiene I’m sure a small infection would run rampant and cause all sorts of sad results

Sad case all the way around
I hear this and wonder how different her situation would be living today
With access to birth control
Would it have changed things
It doesn't seem to make that much difference today. People still have children and kill them.
The world is currently overpopulated and we do have birth control and condoms available. So don't think that was the issue. Contributing factor but not the root course. The problem was that women married had a better chance of social and economic survival those years. The fact that she had a child, got married and then somehow was pregnant with another man's kid when getting married not help her "suitability" and to top it off it was a biracial child. It sounds harsh but no use judging past societies by today's moral standards. In 100 years they be Judging us as well.

Congrats! Your channel just keeps on growing! Interesting case. That poor woman had a terrible life.
Thank you!

To listen to you now shows the impressive efforts you have made - comparing the narration now to your very first Brief Case posting - Well Done !!!!!
I did think of taking the first ones down but decided not to, glad you listened to them :)
@@BriefCaseOfficial very interesting cases in your early posts

It's amazing how she felt killing only the one child (which was the obvious one out) was the way to solve the social and economic issues she found herself in. Everyone on the thread saying she didn't get help - she had the option of giving them up for adoption. That was an option. Living in an orphanage vs. dying at the hands of your mother. Poor child. RIP Flossy.
Thank you so much for your production values and and story telling skills, BriefCase, ever so much.
Thankyou for watching

I ended up binge watching the channel. Fascinating stuff. I'm a 19th Century historian (my focus, not my age), so this stuff is intriguing. I highly recommend the channel.
Thankyou

She certainly liked to have children out of wedlock. I doubt she had lupus but syphilis. May of affected her brain as well as other symptoms. What do you all think?
"They were in the wharf when suddenly, the young girl fell into the river. She said she looked for assistance, but was unable to, as there was no one about"
(O'Reilly commercial starts)
