Zander Fishing on The Fly

- Some things are just not meant to be and catching Zander on the fly seems to be that thing! This was my second attempt at this species and boyd with the confidence of successfully targeting both Pike and Zander, hopes were high. I have heard it described as the fish of a thousand casts, luckily I had gone along with an expert Predator angler Tom Finney who at least managed to bring a couple of fish to the camera.
I cannot lie I was disappointed not to have put a single fish in the boat but it has hardened my resolve to go back next year and try again. I hope you enjoy the video, you can't win all the time.
Unlucky Lindsay....but you know what they say....God loves a trier. 👍😁
Lol…… he might reward me next year.
@@lindsayiflyfish ....sure he will 👍
Bad luck Lindsay, great video thank you. I've caught Zander at Rutland and had them follow me up at Grafham, both while fishing for trout. My local river -the Trent- has lots of them and I've caught a few on dead baits, I've had a couple of halfhearted attempts with the fly rod but no luck so far. I must try harder! Keep the vids coming. Phil.
I have caught small Zander whilst trout fishing. Will put a bit more time to it next year.
@@lindsayiflyfish Good luck to you. I'm getting too old for pulling big lures on heavy lines all day!
Thanks pal, I will try.
Stick at it Lindsay. Just bad luck with when they feed I expect
Your right Paul, I do enjoy tying the flies mind 😉
Keep going, you'll get one!
That’s the plan 😉
Lindsey they are not far off Zander, I used to fish Walleye on large weighted purple leeches. Regardless of how others fished with any pattern.
I would cast to structure. If you have a fish finder you can find structure that you won't otherwise see, of course you know this. Your friend may have been casting right into structure, you may not have been.
The other thing is the lure has to bounce along the bottom, fairly slowly, of course this is for Walleye, but I cannot see it being that different from Zander. I found out that purple was working where I lived, but they caught the odd fish on yellow jigs so I carried a few yellow jigs though I seldom needed them.
I will certainly give purple a go next time Kerry. Really thought I was going to get one this year, I am told it’s the fish of a thousand casts! 😉
At least you saw a couple brought to boat 😀 I fish walleyes (presuming they are similar) and find that good electronics is a big help as they spend most of the day (when they are not on the hunt) lying quiet on the bottom with little inclination to move any distance to take a lure. They can be aggressive when on feed but usually the takes are soft - you may have had takes you didn't feel. Perch are a favorite forage and yellow & orange flies 3 to 5 inches long do well for me. Imitative flies (with large eyes) work better than attractors, too much flash can put them off. A buoyant fly fished slowly close to bottom is my preferred approach but often a weighted "Clouser" fished right on the bottom is better. Occasionally, letting the fly sit for a few seconds then giving a couple of aggressive strips will get a strike. Don't give up on Zander for this year Lindsay - the fall is the best time to fish for them! Cheers!
I think they are very similar, I just don’t go enough to expect to get one as a matter of course. Don’t have time this year to go again as the backend for trout is nearly upon us an the start of the Grayling fishing.
@@lindsayiflyfish Hi Lindsay.
I tie flies to learn new techniques and I tie flies to fish with. These two patterns have been in the fishing box for years as they are very effective for any predator that eats small fish.
I suggest them to you because I haven't seen anything similar on your side of the pond, because you fish for zander, pike and brown trout and because I think you might want to try something completely different. 😀
The young lad in the videos (Gunnar Brammer) is extremely talented, the book (Fleye Design by Bob Popovics) that he recommends is very good. IMHO it's well worth some time to check out Gunnar's channel, the flies he ties can be scaled down as required and fished where ever you would use a lure.

That’s why we call it fishing not catching. The lessons of today are the foundation of future success. Yes your target was Zander. Today combination of conditions and the fish not being as actively feeding on the day. Did not help much. Next time the fish just might be tempted. There is always the chance of a bonus surprise. When targeting Zander there is always the chance a pike or even a large ferox Brown could target your fly.
No doubt!
That's why it's called fishing and not catching we all have those days
That’s the truth 👍
Which DI7 flyline #9 did the guide use?
#10 I believe pal.
@@lindsayiflyfish was it a sinktip or a full sink flyline?
@@fishermanstales8946 A full sinker DI7.
@@lindsayiflyfish thank you very much sir. I my self am also trying to catch zander with a fly. With the rubbery shad i catch them on the bottom no problem. But with the fly is an other story. Whent no 3 times with the fly. Blanked every time. Good luck to you and you're quest!
@@fishermanstales8946 This will be my year I am sure of it......lol.
Puh 9WT for a Zander. I caught mine with a 6WT 8.2Ft on a full intermediate line. Not that much wind of course. But a nine weight is a bit of an overkill in my opinion. I would suggest a 7WT or maximum an 8WT. Don’t understand these huge rod sizes today at all anyway. Don’t want to throw a nine weight all day long and then catch a 60 cm Zander or pike on it which makes no fun at all.
But I’m usually the guy that is a rod size under than above as I simply don’t expect a monster at any time. Maybe I will regret the day then when the monster will hit my fly. Don’t know. But still I got out huge Carp on a 4WT rod too. And Zander is not as hard fighting in a drill like a carp! So I’m quite confident I will make it ;)
Well done 👍
For big streamers, 9wt fly rod is not overkill. For smaller streamers, 9wt is not necessarily needed. And one 9wt is not same as the other 9wt. I am fly fishing for pikes with big streamers /17-23cm/ and 9wt and 10wt.
Not sure why Zander is not taken for eating more in the UK, far better than trout.
Never tied it, then again I am not keen on trout.
@@lindsayiflyfish l eat it quite often over here, it's really nice and tastes a bit like white fish with very few bones in a fillet.
@@lindsayiflyfish very popular here in Germany and very good. If you’ve not tried it and you eat fish then I can highly recommend it. Get yourself to Austria sometime for some river fishing you’ll find Zander on the menu, great with a beer or grüner veltliner.
Wouldn’t say better than trout as it doesn’t have any specific taste by itself like a trout. But it’s a great neutral white meat and fish dish. Usually I would be in need and make some nice green sauce with it with some rice or pasta.
