I remember back in the 80's when people called D&D players anti-social when they play a game that requires them to... socialize with others.
90% of my tyranid army are ebay rescues. Half-done models, badly painted, some lightly damaged. Prices are crazy low, and most bad paint jobs can be removed with 95° alcohol + toothbrush (for plastics) or acetone (for metal models). Basically trading work on models for much lower prices. Win-win situation to me.
I remember, i have that second-hand shop in my town. It is selling mostly cloths and some garbage, but i found GW big box with entire starter army of sm and ork + not even opened assult squad, for 15$ total.

Ebay sucks so hard now. For a while before everyone and their mother used it you could get some good deals on just about anything used, but these days its just a worse version of amazon with no company to hold accountable when you get a pile of broken/unusable shit.
I love the Pious Vorne model. The armor isn't very "effeminate" like other sisters and that flamethrower is beautiful.
a couple of year ago I found on a local small ads plattform an offer from my hometown that said: "small astronauts with guns and a tank" together with a crappy picture of some space marines with a Rhino for 25€.
I prefer to throw cash money and instant gratification will happily drive an hour plus to a lgs to get a mini or set I want lmao
That's great when it's a mini they have in stock, or can order for you.
But some of us like to find old school GW mini's. I've got a small collection of one's from the 80's to early 90's. The ones from the early 80's were nearly impossible to find in the US when they were being produced and the later ones I usually passed on as I wasn't playing WFB/40K so I was spending my money on other gaming stuff. Plus, it frequently meant buying a blister that might contain additional mini's that you neither wanted nor needed.
Deal hunting used to be my favorite part of the hobby. I got multiple apocalypse-sized armies near the end of 7th ed for ~75% off.

My best catch was probably seven Deathwing Terminators (6 Dark Vengeance, 1 DWT box) for $30.
I've also gotten 2/3 of the SM half of Indomitus for $110, although that's not super impressive.

I bought a really poorly painted lot of first born marines for $8 I got 2 captains, a rhino, and 30ish tactical marines
Also, if you are lucky enough, your local gaming store can have used stuff. This can be really amazing
I actually found a Vorne on cut out Sprue on eBay for $18+shipping. Which came out to $23. She’s a really tough model to find but I love it.

I liked this video, lots of good advice here, especially about comportment when it comes to negotiating, accepting, and declining offers. I would have liked to see something here about respecting the game stores you play at, though. I've played a lot of games in a lot of stores and there are always players who come in and play games but refuse to shop at the store itself. "It's cheaper on eBay".
I think that shopping around for an individual model from Blackstone Fortress is totally reasonable. The cost of that game definitely kept me out of it. But I feel like that can be taken too far sometimes. We've lost game stores because players refused to shop there but demanded to be catered to as players. I don't think I'm the only person who has seen this happen.
I know that many people don't have game stores that have dedicated game space and I know that there are some stores that are run by people who are not always nice or considerate. I would ask that you consider making a video in the future about playing at the FLGS and what are good ways to support a store while still coming up with creative ways to obtain models like the one you presented here.

I am a big kitbash fan, so I hunting more for bits and stuff on the market places. Best offer I get my hands on so far was five sprues of Stormcast, the Soul Wars box set plus one other bof with Liberators, i guess, only 4 models are gone, for around 15€, shipping included. 😅

If you see something on Ebay you want but is a bit more than you want to pay, add it to your 'Watch' list and wait. Ebay allows sellers to offer people who are watching an item a 48 hour discount on the item (sellers choice on discount amount). I've managed to save quite a few bucks that way on items that were just a little more than I wanted to spend.

Or better still, scratchbuild your own. They are FANTASY figures after all.
I like my stuff NOS at least so I can get the enjoyment of building and or kitbashing it so secondhand is rarely my first pick but I did join a few fb groups just in case good deals pop, which they do from time to time. Definitely worth it even if you are not in the market right now imo.

My best gets are either my copy of Space Hulk I nabbed for $20 cause I saw it in the bottom corner of a picture, or a free lot that included a Valkyrie, decent sized ork army, 9 codexes, bunch of DG and some space marine parts. I've got pretty lucky with my finds all in all.
I’m the guy that loves to put corpses of other armies in the bases of my bigger models, usually made of spare parts from friends, like a spare head arm and weapon making a half burried body. This seems like a great way to diversify the slain.
I enjoy I'm in that large US Facebook group. Found some gems in there.
If an eBay seller has a "or best offer" I usually try to negotiate that way, unless i feel the price is reasonable.
10 years on and I can't find the Wave Serpent top Cannon Mount. I have a number of dual heavy weapons, but the closest I've come to finding the mount was on a already built wave serpent that had been painted. I'll for sure give this a try. If it doesn't work I'll probably have to try to scratch build one. But then I don't know if it'd be tabletop legal.

To add a note with eBay and international sellers. Since Games Workshop is a UK-based company I've noticed when you want an older model they are almost exclusively from the UK. And oddly enough I see a lot of Australian sellers as well.
I go to some discords as well, they usually have a trading chat. I got two Onager Dunecrawlers and a Daedalus for a really good price.
Best buy was probably local selling blightwar box with a box of stormcast paladins for 120 euro, all new and wrapped in box

I've also heard a lot of horror stories about those Facebook groups, at least over here in the UK. A lot of people out there selling painted armies for decent prices, you pay over PayPal, and they send you a couple models in the post instead of the whole army. Then when you try to dispute it through PayPal they provide a proof of shipping and say that you lied and PayPal rules in their favour, and bye bye money. It nearly happened to me too, but when I was about to pay the invoice, someone else put up a post about the guy I was dealing with calling him a scammer, and I dodged a bullet.

Not as a good deal as others commented, but I’m happy. Got 85 Necron Warriors from different listings for about $150. The old ones with the cool rod inserts. Is it too many? Maybe but like them better as my flayer blocks. I’ll use the new models as reapers.
Agreed - I like it when my models have their own backstory, especially if they are older minis.
Solid advise I ocasionaly delve into this more recently and have this far had a few positive experiences , primarily I'm a oop fantasy guy so by and large my buy sell and trade aquisitions are largley done at a few regional conventions one of Wich I anualy am a vendor at with mixed bagg results never know what you'll find but happy when ya do and often may catch a bargain being more of a painter collector than a player I rarely have anything specific in mind more luck of the draw finding old citadel and merauder metal to then paint and add to the display and Instagram gallery
Here in Britain the 40k Ork Combat patrol is £95, I got it on EBay brand new for £71
My son and I want to start painting miniatures. We really want to start on the cheap end, especially since I want to see if my son will enjoy it or not. Would joining these kinds of groups beneficial for beginners? Currently live in Calgary, Canada. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I used a lot fb groups, u are right can get good stuff but u can get also bad trader's and unfriendly people. After a few negative experiences I leave all groups on fb
i just snagged a chainbreaker lance box for 110 bucks after shipping on ebay, its definitely my go to but I've gotten good deals on facebook marketplace also
Best deal I got was a guy selling dark imperium death Guard characters. The listing said death Guard characters and troops and I was mainly just looking for the lord of contagion and malignant plague caster. I won the bet at like 35 and to my surprise when I opened the box not only was there the characters I was looking for but a full 7 man plague marines unit but seven old style plague marines, little bit of isopropyl did the trick stripping them, best deal I've ever gotten!
Only issue is if we dont support the storr at all they generally dont stick around so I like to split where I shop to help keeps the bricks and mortar stores I came at open
One of my best finds was getting two Carnifexes and an Exocrine for $100 CAD and free shipping. Basically got a free Exocrine.
I got a limited edition captain for space marines for retail and the guy was looking for japan space marine heroes i charged him less as I have loads of them and I tend to travel to japan, it's really on reputation. If you're good with customers they are good back.
I got all of my space marines for a few hundred bucks and alot more off of Ebay and Facebook, the thing is when buying on Ebay always use goods and services .
The best offer I ever got was a nearly complete box of assault on black reach with a little bit more for around 70$
I got the five pack of easy to assemble guard for 4.95 shipped! They had put the image of the tyrannid pack on the post by accident. So I bid minimum and won

A full 1500 point Idoneth Deepkin army for $85 (prebuilt, badly painted)
Most of my current 1500 point slaanesh force for about $100
I say it's worth it, as I've saved probably 2 or more thousand bucks and have 3 full armies. The downside is sometimes you have to be patient, but I feel this is well worth it.
I had a great ebay find it was a lord of Contagion from DI and 5 plague marines $35 AUD which converts tolike 20 or 25 USD
My best find so far is 4 imperial knights and the Adeptus titanicus civitas imperialis terrain for 50$. I was kinda floored tbh.

Personally i'd use those means of getting minis but since everything on Ebay is coming from UK the price of delivery is enormous enough to make me just give up on it and buy a new one from local store.

That only works for boxes that are currently in stock or are still produced.
Totally not worth the time and effort. Much better to just get the individual model you want. Unless you’re still in school or something and have a ridiculous amount of free time.

I've bought and sold on eBay since its inception, and there are not as many good deals there now. Its become less hobbyists trading. Lot better luck on FaceBook than eBay these days, and fewer fees. Thrift stores can be a source, but unreliable. Half Price books has codexes frequently, and occasionally boxed sets of various games. Half Price Books is great if you are an old-Hammer player.
For anyone rescuing painted models use simple green to get the paint out it’s enough strong to strip but gentle enough to not damage the models even if you leave them sitting there for weeks

Wanted a warlord titan, didn't want to spend £1300 on basically resin , looked on eBay, found one for £650 , the reason it hadn't sold yet was due to people having to pick it up.
I lived about half an hour away so had no issue collecting it ...it is legit and was partially built so even less for me to do, that's a £650 saving or so.
