HappeninG That is a joke. Stage 1 is to fix the drive ability. It only adds like 10hp? It doesn’t require you to put an aftermarket air intake or any of that. If your scared of the dealer voiding your warranty, don’t do it. You can flash it back to stock tune anytime. Let’s say your exhaust hanger broke off or your door lock stopped working. How would they claim that since you did an aftermarket tune we are not liable? Let’s say you modify your car, change out the air intake. Then you throw a Cel, you bring it in. Then they can say it’s because of the intake we can’t do anything about it. By the way I’ve used the perrin intake, just for more noise and there is no check engine light.
I just bought one of these new about 6 months ago and I love it, this review was what really solidified my decision. I did not get the series.white, so I didn't get all of the goodies. I will say that the stock speakers are absolute trash. My wife's base trim 2008 Honda Civic has better clarity in the midrange. The brakes on the normal WRX do the job but there's a lot to be desired. The seats are comfortable but they could definitely be bolstered a little better. However, I will say that this car is an absolute blast to drive. It is my first manual. I drove an STI only a handful of times prior to buying my WRX, so 95% of my experience driving manual is solely in this car. If you don't know how to drive stick, this car is challenging to learn on. Since I've owned it, I've driven a Mustang GT, Focus RS, STI, GTI, Civic SI and a handful of other cars and they're all incredibly easy to drive in comparison. The WRX is a very responsive car in a sense that everything you do right or wrong, it'll let you know how it feels about every input you make. Very satisfying once you get it right. I could write an incredibly long review about this car but your video hits all of the marks incredibly well. Thank you for doing these reviews, I don't know if I would've made the decision to buy this car and learn manual if you never made this. Driving my car has become my absolute favorite thing to do and it brings me so much joy. Thank you!
Got my driver's license a couple months ago. I still dream about owning a WRX, specially those 2nd gen models, they're just beautiful. Also great video btw
K T hahaha really, that bad? I drive a 2018, and the rev hangs sucks, don’t get me wrong, but it adds a speck of character to the experience. It’s never fun, but you learn to live around it, and then the car is great. For all the flaws and shortcomings, I love my WRX.
Yeah the 2020 you only feel bad rev hang going from 1st to 2nd gear and that’s really only if you redline it. Every other gear is very manageable and you can still bang gears without having that jerk after a shift. Very fun car and if you get an exhaust system it makes it even more fun to drive and makes a lot of pops which are always nice to hear.
I got a 17 base WRX back in late 2016. Saved myself some cash choosing the cheapest one but I really wish it had a better audio system without having to go aftermarket. Other than that I still love it!
Order the android head unit made for the wrx works like a charm and sounds great the stock speakers have better potential than you think they just got a crap power plant

I don't follow. I have been driving a 2015 WRX and I'm still having a blast in it. Of course it's modded so your mileage may vary. This car has probably one of the best aftermarket platforms of all the cars I've ever drive, and I can still drive it in the snow.
ive got the 2016 wrx. near full bolt on with e85. sadly had to put it into storage due to me getting stationed to japan. i miss driving that car so much lol. keep up the great content man.
You can tune the ECU in the aftermarket to get rid of the rev hang, but I don’t know if your warranty would still be valid. Rev hang is something automakers do for emissions and such, but I agree it sucks.
The rev hang is actually a faux rev hang, simply shifting as if its not there (not waiting for the tach to drop) will yield a perfectly rev matched UP shift. Its a nice secret baked in feature to satisfy emissions regs on paper but subaru retained the feature of totally negating it if you know the trick I mentioned.
@@ps3alphagamer12 I have a 2020 WRX and i let the revs drop before the shift and it seems to be smoother. So you're saying don't wait or let it drop at all and just shift quick? I just came from an 07 Civic Si and was a little shocked at how close 5th and 6th are! Even still, I seem to be getting very generous highway MPG (low 30s.)
@@ericiidx just for clarity, did you have a civic before, now drive a wrx, and shocked by how close 5th and 6th are on the wrx? If you're getting 30s for mpg in a wrx, that's pretty impressive, unless it's all highway and 65mph or less.
clover yup, that's exactly right. 6th was appropriately giant in the Si! And that "low 30s" was indeed 98% highway at 65ish MPH, haha! Just taking glances at the MPG estimator watching it climb. Still breaking in though, not sure how things may change. I'm a conservative driver most of the time.
The engine they should have launched the BRZ/86’s with.....regardless, I’m still perplexed at the limited popularity of those cars. It truly baffles me.... Steve honestly I felt like the WRX was built better interior and mechanically, but that’s just me....the STI feels cheap on the inside for the money and there are a few downgrades to the interior....not to mention a brake job is about a cool 3k...fun car and all but for the money if I could go back I wouldn’t have traded in my WRX
Steve don’t get me wrong I’ve had a lot of fun with it and I kind of impulse bought it after having 2 WRX’s and wanting an STI since I was 16 years old...but if I knew then what I knew now I would have kept my 17 limited WRX hands down
Scott Perkins how would you compare steering feel? People say the wrx electronic steering is numb in comparison. Also how about the power band of the ej vs the FA?
I have a 2017 Limited, it's a great little car overall but that factory throttle mapping was annoying sometimes. It has a lot of character, with a few mods it really comes to life. I like the seats from this one and the suspension/brake upgrade.

Thinking of series white if I have to sell her. :( Didn't know you can get recaros in a WRX which is dope. After watching you're other car Reviews it made me notice how outdated and practical the wrx actually is for its age lol. I'm excited to see the new 2022. I took my Outback Premium 2.5 out west to Rockies , Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Black Hills and Badlands. I was getting 32- 36 cruising through Kanas. I barely use the gas pedal once up to speed on the highway
@@alexpeguero38For me, the STI is a more raw, engaging driving experience. The transmission feels more confidence inspiring when you push the car. The steering rack is hydraulic as well (so a better response to the road). And lastly, I feel the car is wayyyy smoother daily driving in the city than my wrx. My wrx had no room for error on any "mis shifts" and could be a little herky jerky. IDK if its just me, but the STI feels way more refined when I am cruising around the city.
@@alexpeguero38 If you are asking about the difference between a WRX and STI, I might be able to help since I drove them both before buying the STI. I drove a 2019 WRX and like many others the first thing I noticed was the rev hang. Subaru has corrected some of that but it's still there to an extent. The WRX felt a bit quicker in the lower rev range but I found that it quickly ran out of torque around 4000rpm. The STI builds speed consistently until you reach 6k rpm. The WRX steering, suspension and transmission feel are inferior to the STI. This is something you need to experience for yourself. One good thing about Subaru is that they will actually let you test drive a WRX or STI with no problem unlike Honda with the TypeR. You are more likely to get a kidney from a Honda dealer than a test drive in the TypeR. Since I own an STI I can tell you that I am very glad I didn't get the WRX. A big mistake people make is spending all kinds of extra money trying to make a WRX an STI. At this point (fall 2020) I would wait to buy anything until the new STI comes out. If you don't like it you can always find a preowned 2019-2020 STI, and those are the ones you should get because of the improvements made to the STI in 2019.
I can’t wait to see you drive the new one since I have a deposit on one. Despite the controversy of the looks, it sounds like they have improved an already good drivers car. I was torn between the WRX and the Elantra N but with Hyundai dealers all within driving distance wanting $5,000 over MSRP for an Elantra N while Subaru is only asking MSRP, kind of made my decision. Also, the struts in the back of the Elantra make it a little less practical. I also have never driven an AWD “performance car” so I am interested in the WRX, and the resale value is great if I decide to upgrade later.
I have a 2015 STi as well as a 2020 WRX performance pack. Although the STi is amazing, I think the WRX is a better bargain especially with the Brembo brakes. If you want a daily driver get the WRX, the low end torque is much more usable.

Absolutely Love my 2017 WRX Limited!!! Such a great car for the Money!
Love your videos man, love them....simple and straight to the point
Awesome car! I would be so happy to get one in some years. Hopefully I can get my hands on one, there aren´t that many in germany.
That steering wheel looks SO GOOD
Dark Project It feels good too.
Had to replace mine because the OEM wheel started to peel after 3 years.

"Sun roof delete"
So it's just not having a sunroof?
Cloth seats are a "leather seat delete".
?
On the Outback , Sunroof is standard on the Tour and Limited. An option on the Premium and Base
More like money delete. The Brembo brakes and billstein dampers are a nice touch but not 4k nice.
Leather seat delete too
The premium comes with a sunroof so you have to opt out of having it. Which means you pay for it but don’t get it.
Just ordered my 2020 Performance Package in Crystal White Pearl. Should arrive during November, such a painful wait!
Get the Series White! I love mine.
I just Ordered a base WRX and can't wait to drive it !
This car has grown on me so much
Rev hang doesn't look as bad as it used to be :)
I love my Subaru wrx and I love this review!
Would you considered them reliable?
Whatever Subaru did for the 2019/2020 to handle rev-hang is way better than the previous models
Its so much better dude, I had a 2018
Glad my first wrx is a 2019
I’ll have to check one out again. Did a u-turn at the first intersection and straight back to the dealer when I drove a 2018
K T hahaha really, that bad?
Series.White STi owner here. Good job on the review of the Rex.
I have a 2018 premium so this basically my car! Always fun to see that
I got a 17 base WRX back in late 2016. Saved myself some cash choosing the cheapest one but I really wish it had a better audio system without having to go aftermarket. Other than that I still love it!
Order the android head unit made for the wrx works like a charm and sounds great the stock speakers have better potential than you think they just got a crap power plant
got a 2021 base after watching you drive this, we have a very similar driving style, great rev matching and rhythm to you shifting, nice controlled lines, hands at 9 and 3 mostly.
gotta say im really happy with it.
edit 1/01/24: aaaaaand i sold it for a 23 BRZ

Tell me where for the money you get awd, very good japense reliability, great handling, and you dont look like a 18 year racer boy driving it. I love mine very good bang for the buck.
Got a 2017 WRX and honestly pretty ready to move on from it. It was fun but life changes.
Just life changes or is car getting annoying?
I got a 2017 wrx a couple months ago and I love it trans does some weird things.
How about a new corolla
Brendan Fogel Tune makes its perfect. No rev hang and the power band is amazing
Subaru’s rally cars are first class...
Love my Series.White. e30,TMIC, oem STI springs and an intake. Very fun to drive.
3:40 yes! I knew I wasnt the only one doing this 😀
I would buy this today, if i get this in India..... This is a beautiful machine 👍
Thank you for doing a sound system test!

That Rev hang still seems brutal. I mean if you're going to make a manual in 2020 to go against really good DSGs, at least make it smooth!
You can tune the ECU in the aftermarket to get rid of the rev hang, but I don’t know if your warranty would still be valid. Rev hang is something automakers do for emissions and such, but I agree it sucks.
Epa
The rev hang is actually a faux rev hang, simply shifting as if its not there (not waiting for the tach to drop) will yield a perfectly rev matched UP shift. Its a nice secret baked in feature to satisfy emissions regs on paper but subaru retained the feature of totally negating it if you know the trick I mentioned.
@@ps3alphagamer12 I have a 2020 WRX and i let the revs drop before the shift and it seems to be smoother. So you're saying don't wait or let it drop at all and just shift quick? The rev hang jerk is real and it's so annoying. Long time ago I had a manual civic 1999 before and never had this issue. When driving the civic with friends, they thought i was driving an auto it was so smooth
@@tomzeto Being totally blind, I'd be able to tell that it's a manual. I'd be able to tell by feeling the motion of the vehicle. And I always feel around the car to see what's on it and what it feels like.
I was going to buy this car but the road/wind noise is awful. That’s the one thing that stopped me from getting it. Went with a 2020 Honda Accord Sport instead
How do you like it? They seem like nice cars
DannyD Dude they are great cars. I got the regular 1.5T sport, and it’s fast enough, it definitely moves but it’s a bit lacking. Other than that, it’s a super quiet, comfortable ride. Interior is so spacious, once you sit in it and realize how big it is it’s crazy.
@@brandondannys-menary3678 I have a 2000 Ford Taurus that I have my parents drive for me since I can't see. I don't like using their gas for them to drive me places but I had to for the past couple of months because my car is getting fixed. I have the 3 liter Duratech v6.
I was contemplating the Accord Sport 2.0T or the WRX. I was really torn, but opted for the WRX Limited. I'm glad I did. It's a good daily and I'm getting better gas mileage than my previous daily.
Du'Wan Morrison what’s the gas mileage like on it?
Perfect car!!!! And your evaluation too! Sérgio - Brazil
This is my dream car
Am I the only one that waits specifically for TheTopher POV for a final impression on a car? 👀
I wish 6th was taller. It hits top speed in 5th anyway. They should have made 6th just for fuel economy, like the 8th gen civic si.
Cvt has a higher top speed than the manual
love the color on those rims!
I am sad that the last year of the WRX is the only one to get Brembos without getting the STI
The engine they should have launched the BRZ/86’s with.....regardless, I’m still perplexed at the limited popularity of those cars. It truly baffles me.... This WRX is very nice, I didn’t realize they were doing a special edition. I owned a 2006 STi and truly regret ever parting with that car, it was magic and mine was absolutely perfect.
i dont agree. i think that the gt86 platforn is almost perfect with the downfalls being in the tune and stock wheel and tire setup, which can both be changed aftermarket
My 2016 Premium had paper cone speakers with the legit the smallest magnets I've ever seen on a speaker before. Rip 2016 model lol
You are lucky getting different models in America than we get in the UK. Wish we had this one here.
Currently getting a new wrx, but man am i sad coming to the realization that im not gonna be driving my lowered bugeye wagon everyday like i am now… Even with all its little problems, i love that car
Nice didn’t realize you were out by Ann Arbor ish. Finally recognized some road I knew they looked familiar 😂
you drive very smoothly
I hope they switch back to the curvy design instead of this EVO-like square cuts.
Love subies and Honda’s!!!
I have a 2018 STI and I’d go back to a WRX any day
Why?
Steve honestly I felt like the WRX was built better interior and mechanically, but that’s just me....the STI feels cheap on the inside for the money and there are a few downgrades to the interior....not to mention a brake job is about a cool 3k...fun car and all but for the money if I could go back I wouldn’t have traded in my WRX
Scott Perkins good info, only reason I went 2020 wrx is I don’t trust the EJ25 for spirited driving/track days, to many common issues.
Just blew the motor in my 2018 with 35k miles. It's lifted for off-road cause I like being unique.
I freaking love these cars tho. So unreliable but so fun lmao. Thinking of series white if I have to sell her. :(
Didn't know you can get recaros in a WRX which is dope. After watching you're other car Reviews it made me notice how outdated and practical the wrx actually is for its age lol. I'm excited to see the new 2022. Hopefully it'll have more option like lane keep assist and blind spot monitering. I can't believe they still even have keys for 2020s+
35k miles? you must have had an accessport on it.
I have a 18 wrx and road tripped it to the grand canyon. Got 40mpg on the trip
I owned a WRX 18 and got 15mpg city and 21 highway
City 20 highway 27 for me. I got long drive at least 33 37 mpg also I saw 43 mpg in this car. I wish more fuel capacity this car
I took my Outback Premium 2.5 out west to Rockies , Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Black Hills and Badlands. I was getting 32- 36 cruising through Kanas. I barely use the gas pedal once up to speed on the highway
I have a 2018 limited. It's been a really great car!
Topher, thank you for an outstanding POV drive as always!!!! Love it! What is the name of the track at 13:00 please?

I bought a 2019 STI after trying the WRX first.
Smart decision.
Had a WRX for 4 years and loved it. Just recently upgraded to a STI and it's truly a different experience...and I love every minute of it!
Jason Yee how different
How does a 2L have more low end torque than a 2.5L?
