The Bolt is a great deal. Glad you included it in the list even though GM has lost it's mind and cancelling production. It really is a car that hits the affordable EV niche that does most things pretty well. DCFC isn't fast, but fast enough to be able to do regional travel without too much drama.

Hello, recently got interested in electric cars for a friend. And when I get interested i totally immerse myself. Really enjoy your videos and honest direct opinions. and your top 10 lists. I live in Europe so maybe they are not available in the us yet but I did miss brands like mg in your top ten lists while that is a car especially the mg4 that I am really looking into as a relatively affordable electric car. Then there is for example byd as well. Thanks again for all the great content.

The Bolt looks like a good buy. Can't even afford one of those.
I will stick with my Leaf.
Rode with a friend in a model Y. It seems to have a fairly stiff suspension. I drove my Leaf over a stretch of road we test drove the model Y on and the Leaf had a much smoother ride.
He bought it for his wife. She enjoys not having to pump her own gas and she can go the same number of days before she has to charge it. She likes that it's less expensive to charge, however the suspension could be a little softer.

The Kona EV is faster than it’s 0-60 would suggest. It is front wheel drive and has tons of torque so it’s impossible to launch quickly without spinning the tires. My 2021 Kona spins all the way to 35 MPH. It’s nuts. If the car had AWD or better traction control, the 0-60 would be MUCH quicker. The car feels extremely fast, esp is Sport Mode.

Maybe it was the larger wheels or the performance model. That have a darker ride. But the dual motor long range ones ride smoother on the smaller wheels.

I leased a KIA Niro EV in 2021, because there were no Chevy Bolts available for sale, due to the recall. I actually liked the Niro very much, but always thought it was too large for me. When the chance came up for me to order a new 2023 Bolt, I took the opportunity
to do so....and I'm a happy man!!! Nice and compact, plenty of zip, handles nicely, and I very seldom travel long distances, so the slow rapid charge problem doesn't bother me.
I appreciate your work! Blessings, turbo

In New Zealand we must have different battery sizes to the model you put at number 3 on your list, with ranges just under 200 miles and just over 300 miles. If we take the shorter range Kona at $63300NZ we actually have 11 models that come in cheaper and 9 of these 11 have a longer range. The MG 4 excite at $52000NZ promises a range of 450km or 280 miles.

Looking to turn in my 2022 Leaf as my 2 year lease is up this month and buy a Bolt. From what I understand the car is good for the tax credit of $3250 for being made in America. However it doesn't qualify for the $3250 credit on the battery as that is not made in America. I truly love the 22 Leaf but the Chadamo DC option, the air cooled- not water cooled battery and the range of 160 miles as I had the 40KW battery were deal breakers. Not to mention no tax credits. Wish Nissan had seen that coming. Of course the Aryia has these features but 50K is way out of my price range.

No they are not, they ignore state based sales taxes etc. - however on the other side they also exclude individual state incentives like low income incentives in CA, and general incentives elsewhere (in addition to FTC), there is in fact no 'drive-away" universal price for a car in the USA, every person's personal situation and every state's approach to incentives means that the actual cost to purchase is unique to every person.

All these prices are guinea pig pricing, r& d recovery. Maybe for all but the leaf. In the next few years as the big manufacturers start selling cars en masse , good cars that they will not release right now as it would cut into their profits from ice cars before they are ready to convert all manufacturing to electric. I expect prices to drop on average by $10 000 or even $20 000,or these models to be stopped and better more compelling to be sold, under 150kw charging right now is a joke, Nissan has to do this as they have no active cooling system but others i don't understand.
All in all, most of these cars prices cut drastically when they are selling in big numbers, or when governments give better discounts due to forcing many to convert. I predict that by 2025 we will see most normal cars selling for 20 000 or less and give the performance of the kia or hyundai. One thing to also look out for is the second hand market. right now most cars sold new are business cars, they will demand the range and fast charging and the second hand market will be selling these a lot better than less compelling cars unless prices drop much faster and much lower than what we see in ice cars.
The future looks very bright for car buyers in every market, we will see ford release a ford focus electric car that will sell well and others will do the same, but ev's are much cheaper to manufacture and other than the battery costs of parts are very low.

Mazda is absolutely adorable, I drove one for almost 3 years and unfortunately the charging speed kills it completely. There is no point in buying it today. It would have to be capable of 100kW charging for this to make sense, and it will never happen because Mazda limits the charge because they don't want the battery to degrade before the warranty runs out. Wait about 2 years for Carmageddon, circa 2025. Cheaper BEVs from China, like the Volvo EX30 in the USA, BYD Seagull in Europe, and Tesla's next generation platform vehicles globally, will drive down prices for competing BEVs and ICE cars. We can expect legacy ICE car inventories to rise and new and used car prices to fall precipitously. It will likely be a bloodbath for legacy automotive OEMs (with at least a few bankruptcies, mergers, and acquisitions likely), but a great windfall for car. buyers. Some say it has already begun.

Yeah, I was realizing the same thing. On the other hand, if you can afford one of these cars, there is a good chance that you have a substantial tax deferred 401k (or 403b) account, so it might be an opportunity to rollover tax-deferred funds into a Roth IRA and have the tax credit offset the tax you would otherwise pay.

@@DairyAirGunners That's exactly what I thought until I spent some time looking into the details of exactly how auto leasing works. Turns out the lease payments only cover the expected depreciation. At the end of the lease, you can buy the car, trade the car in, or let the leasing company have it back. If the depreciation is more than projected, you get out. If the depreciation is less than expected, you get the leasing company to pay you the difference. With EV technology and pricing changing so quickly, leasing is a very reasonable option right now. It allows you to drive the car that's currently available, but bail out in the years of newer models make it more feasible.

I feel obliged to ask why you're still taking such a US-centric view of cars when living in Thailand ! In Europe one of the best value EVs are those made by MG (a division of SAIC). I know they sell in Thailand too, Bjorn Nyland has one. There's also the sub-$20,000 Dacia Spring.
FWIW, there's a difference between the 'average price of a car' (simply take every model including Porsches, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces and Bentleys for example and divide it by the number of models) and the average price paid for a car which takes into account the few of those very high priced models actually bought by the public.

Oh I'm also a low-budget peon so I'm more of a realist than a gambler....not a perfectionist. As far as I know, infrastructure is insufficient and uncertain...correct me if I'm wrong. For example, California is trying to convince businesses to install 700 chargers. In the same paragraph, they're suggesting they would roll power supply to them to protect the grid. Another example, Lordstown, in Ohio, built just 31 of its electric pickup trucks before production issues arose. And I have no idea where the supply chain lies. I hope people don't run out and buy the Bolt only to find it discontinued. Regardless of its current quality (or lack there of) I would not put the Bolt on top. The Bolt is the cheapest EV choice in the US in 2023, that is what the video is about. They are available to purchase today, check your Chevy dealership. Many of these cars have long waits to get a unit and you still get dealer markups. Last time I was in a Kia dealership that was $5k.

It is the same in the US. Tesla prices change daily, but the Bolt price changes every second. The actual price of a Bolt has nothing to do with the manufacturer's Suggested retail price. The dealers makeup there own price and it can change in an instant. It is such a scam. The dealers put the MSRP in the add because they are not required to show the addons.
