    "I thought Deep Thought was a real computer."
    You might've been thinking of Deep _Blue,_ the first computer to win a game _and_ a match of chess against a reigning world champion (Soviet Grandmaster Garry Kasparov) under standard-rules move time constraints.
    The New York Red Bulls play men's soccer (guess who _their_ biggest sponsor is!) and the New York Liberty plays women's basketball. No one asked, but since no one got them; Magic is a women's soccer team and the Brooklyn Nets (the New York Nets 1968-1977) are another men's basketball team. _Technically_ the Nets play for the _borough,_ but they are _in_ New York. The Islanders, which only Hudson apparently got, are a men's hockey team like the Rangers.

    I did not expect to learn where the whole "Ants!" thing from Rounds playlist comes from... the surprises never cease ^^'
    Still: I cannot believe that with that Greek god question the first name that pops in one's head ISN'T Ares; I mean he's like an obvious pick, I literally called it out the moment question was asked ^^'
    Also from NY sports team - in case no-one wrote it yet - "Red Bulls" are the Major League Soccer team... one of two last I checked, but the other one was New York City FC I think... I assume it was changed to Magic or some such, since "Liberty" is a WNBA team... again - last I checked ^^'

    "There's no way there is over 7000 languages in use." Linguist here. There are around 2000 living languages in Africa alone. To be fair, Ash is right about there being fewer. It is estimated that 90% of living languages have less than 100,000 speakers.

    • @Kewryn
      @Kewryn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wait, than let me ask you this: what constitutes a "living language"? Isn't the requirement to be used in daily life? Or is it just that a certain amount of people can speak it?
      For example: is latin considered a "living language" at this point?

    • @MordredMorghul
      @MordredMorghul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@Kewryn A simple definition is that a living language is one that people still use to communicate. While good for a linguistics 101 student, this prompts an examination into the definition of "communicate."
      A more nuanced way to look at what a living language is, is to look at what it is not. A dead language, in addition to not being spoken in communication, is complete. It is no longer evolving, new words are not being added to the lexicon, and old words are not taking new meanings or contexts.

      @@MordredMorghul I was curious about this too, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge :D

    • @Kewryn
      @Kewryn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MordredMorghul That does seem to leave quite a bit of room for interpretation.
      If you don't mind another question than: does different dialects used "within" the same language are actually counted as separate languages in this case?
      I mean it is my understanding that in Germany every Land has some differences in their dialect to the common German/Deutsche or how in the US Texans can have a fairly distinct way of speaking, including words or sentances that are unique to that, particular dialect.
      So the question would be if "American" and "Texan" are considered two languages in this case or are they both just "American" (or "English", I'm again not sure if there's an actual division here)?
      I'm asking mostly because I'm curious and having a little hard time wrapping my head around the number; I mean given the number of countries in the world, this would mean that each of them - on average - has roughly 20 living languages that are unique to that country alone (as in not used outside its borders). Seems kinda high.

    • @MordredMorghul
      @MordredMorghul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Kewryn in the field of linguistics, dialects are not counted as their own languages. Pidgins and creoles however are a bit more complicated.

    I am surprised how much they underestimated how many languages there were. Think about the US: there are 574 federally recognized tribes. If even a quarter of them have a distinct language (and many do), that is nearly 150 languages. Now do that for countries around the world, many of whom have a dozen major languages spoken without even getting into smaller groups. Though maybe that just seemed easy to me because I knew the correct answer.

    In regards to the living language question, I have a feeling that the number will have dropped almost completely in another few centuries if humanity is still alive. By that point we'll probably have boiled down to the top 3 spoken languages as the world languages that everybody speaks either by choice or force. Nobody currently alive will probably live to see if my predictions are true or not, but I'm sticking with it

    • @Autumn-Muse
      @Autumn-Muse 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think each sovereign state will retain their official language. I can see it dropping under 100 perhaps, but only three languages is greatly underestimating cultural preservation.

    I think Price's comment about sports is unfair because you can easily say the same about basically any type of trivia question. Who cares about fantasy, sci-fi, video games, literature, movies, history, world cultures, etc? It is better to have a mix of questions, even if the group might lean one way or the other, to make it fun for everyone.
