  • As a Brit in Spain I am often asked do I have any regrets moving to Spain. Reality is though I find Spain can be hard work to make a sustainable life here but you need to go into it 110%. It's not an easy transition as many people including myself struggle with learning the language but find its one of the most important things you will need to do and then add on things from there.

    I've been here 30 years, speak fluent spanish and have always worked, now retired. It took me 2 years to learn the language and how life changed when I finally made it! To succeed in Spain and love life you have to integrate. When Brits come on holiday they all say I wish if I could live here! But the reality is far different from being a tourist. They don't think about that! So hence when they finally get here it just doesn't seem as good as before. If you do find work the hours are really long and you have to adapt. Quality of life is so much better here! If you are only prepared to put a bit of work in!

      Early riser...always a winner! Yes, easy option blame Spanish... See it all time.
      No jobs here or expect to earn little! But nothing ventured, nothing gained!
      I live simply n respect culture n laws. Oh n love the paper work!!! :-)

    I lived in Spain for a few years. My 83 year old mum came with me and we both absolutely loved it. I was learning Spanish, we had friends both Spanish and English we came back to the UK because the work situation became difficult and my mum became unwell. I would still be living there if things had gone differently. 😊

    The experience of living in Spain can be a great opportunity for your kids. Because all isn't about money only. I mean, you'll gain a lot if they live in Spain for, let's say, some years... and learn Spanish language as a native (or advanced speaker). I wish you the best. Buena suerte y bienvenidos.

      I agree 100% with you. I happen to be Irish and I had a job offer from a german owned hotel group, back in 2000. At the time I was living and working in Germany. The position on offer was at one of their hotels on the spanish mainland. The children were eight and five at the time, so we jumped at the opportunity because it was going to expose the kids to a different culture and new language. We returned to Germany when the children finished their schooling [habian tenido El Bachillerato] but the benefits of having had this experience in addition to friendships they built up and still have, far outweight any decision we could have made, had we decided to stay in Germany. Buena suerte a ti.

    I am a Spaniard, worked in the US five years, traveled for business to more than 30 countries and other 20 just for pleasure.I never doubted I needed English, although in Miami I used my native Spanish a lot. Later on I learned Russian because I wanted a third language (keep your mind active). Once you are fluent is like being part of the movie, not just watching it; jump into the screen!. You can feel how your mind clicks when you reach that point.
    I obviously want to retire in my home country Spain. I cannot think of a better place, albeit I prefer the interior of Spain, not the coast. The interior is unknown for many foreign tourists and I like it that way. For the time being, I have a quite good job in Madrid and have a good quality of life. Spain is not as expensive as in the UK, Italy, France or Germany. Only Portugal is cheaper in regards to some articles (gas is more expensive, food is cheaper).
    When abroad, I learned a lot from other countries as I have an eclectic approach to life. I am aware of what the Spanish culture lacks, so I try to complement it. I owe the US a lot in this regard. There is not a perfect culture or country, anyway, but combining the best of some of them is more powerful than just adding them up.
    About British living in Spain, I highly recommend to learn the language. It is worth the effort and it is a game changer. It is understandable for tourists not to speak Spanish and we all gladly make efforts to help here, but if you are a permanent resident I deem it to be a sign of courtesy to learn the language of the country where you are invited to live in. Certainly, Spain and its culture won't adapt to you. We are what we are. You cannot get Britain with nicer weather and that's it. Get the whole deal, which is also a good opportunity. You won't be less British doing that, just an enhanced British.

    I lived in Tarragona for 6 years and completely miss it! I learnt Spanish (and a little Catalan), even though I find it bloody difficult to learn languages! Especially listening comprehension. But it is so worth it to integrate into the local community. I couldn't think of anything worse than living a 'Blackpool in the Sun' existence...what's the point?! Making Spanish friends was one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done. Without it, I wouldn't have found out about the pleasures of the town tapas festivals, the local music scene, the hidden little gems of restaurants, the best gyms/fitness classes to go to, etc. I say, if you emigrate, do it fully immersive!

    Very good commentary. Very fair and true to the facts. I have seen so many older Brits move over here, buy enormous properties and then find that as they get older they can't even manage to do the maintenance on them. They end up losing half of what they paid when they sell and living in tiny flats on the costa. I bought a little cave house inland for 19K and couldn't be happier.

      I think it is just rude not to have at least a basic understanding of a language if you move to another country. Why do Brits tend to move to "Brit Towns". It happened here in Australia and there are some terrible areas (almost Ghetto's) where the Poms live and tend not to assimilate well. Lots go home saying what a terrible place Australia is. They make it hard for themselves from day 1.

    • @mattjames88
      @mattjames88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kathryne Barber 1) Australia is an English speaking country 2) most of its inhabitants are British + European descendants. The reason most move back to the UK is that Australia is not all it's cracked up to be, family separation, it's not a 2hr easyJet hop over the bay of biscay home etc. Spain is proximally closer to the UK, but language is a barrier as we really don't push to learn another language + I worry that the UK exiting the EU will make it harder to live in Spain with the same freedoms.
      Poms? 😂😂 are white Australians just going to forgot their European routes ...irony

They are Spanish, they will practice English and I practice my Spanish. It's a great way to learn and it's more fun. I too have no intention of returning.
      When people come to Spain to live they should not expect " Blackpool with decent weather", it's a foreign country so things are different, I think that is where a lot of people fall foul of it. Of course it's not like the UK (thankfully). They should come here, look listen and learn then make an effort.

    I would love your advice on Mar Menor if possible. Went over and spent 1 night in La Manga del Mar Menor which was dead, with derelict buildings and graffiti, then moved to mar menor golf which was lovely as we wanted to check out the apartments, but we were so surprised at how baron it was on all the main roads and surroundings travelling anywhere. We went to 2 beaches around los Alcazares and the streets surrounding this, but again quite surprised at how run down it was. Taxis were taking us on long routes, turning off meters and charging the earth for rides so we came back a little deflated. Can you advise whether this area is generally like this, or we just had a bad experience and didnt get a true picture of this area.? or would you recommend Alicante over Murcia?

      The issue that a lot of people complain about when it comes to Malta is the mentality of ripping non locals off.
      I remember somebody who got charged "foreign price" for espresso coffee for about a year, until the owner of the coffee shop decided to finally apply local prices.
      This person realized he had been ripped off and never set foot in the place again.
      This mentality extends also to landlords, who will tell you in your face they changed the asking price for rent to compensate for the months the property was not rented, or the ones who only want to rent a place to you for 9 months at a time because they can make more money by renting during the summer months (which then leads to having the property empty for a while)... 🤣

    A snake does not know it's shape until it's put in a box. Point is, you put yourself in unfamiliar situations, and see how you react. Everyone has done something, bought something, or moved somewhere, and has been disappointed. That is not a failure, but a learning experience. Moving to another country is tricky, because most people do it after visiting it as a tourist. But that has nothing to do with actually living someplace, where you have to deal with life in the trenches; jobs, relationships, money problems, etc. There are no escape from those, and thinking moving someplace will relieve you of the responsibilities of life is a pipe dream.

      It's not just language many didn't have skills or a plan, myself I have multiple directions to go in. But also 8 years of Asia behind me making an income. The language prevents a lot of jobs on the coast. However get into Madrid, Barcelona or Valencia there are jobs. Pot washing doesn't need much language ability, but gives time to learn it.

    I would be essentially retired if I moved to Spain, but if I used Freelancer to suppliment income would I pay tax on this in Spain? If so, is there any limit to what you can earn before paying tax?

    • @Huma270490
      @Huma270490 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IIRC, and if laws didn't changed, you have a 3000€ limit per year, if you're above that you have to pay taxes. To work as a freelancer you have yo be an "Autónomo", basically someone who is his own boss or the owner of a bussiness, but you have a closed tax quantity(390€, iirc) that, also, count as a "cotización", so you have access to the Seguridad Social(that includes the whole health system, the retirement payment, etc). When you retire you, also, would get the payment according of how much you did cotized ( this verb doesn't exist on english, as fas as I know) so if you pay more per month you would get a bigger payment on your retirement.
      If you're interested on this there are a lot of people that knows by far more than me about the system and, also, they probably wont butcher english as I do xD.
