- Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, meaning those who follow it believe in and worship more than one god or goddess. It is the oldest religion in the world, dating back over 4,000 years. Hindu beliefs are complicated because they are polytheistic and have evolved over so many years, but they mainly follow the Vedas, which are the Hindu holy books. They also believe in Karma, the universal law of cause and effect, and reincarnation, also called Samsara. Another important principle of Hinduism is the Hindu lifestyle or the ashrama life cycle. There are four stages of life in Hinduism in which a Hindu person will ideally pass through:
The student (brahmacari)
The householder (grihastha),
The hermit (vanaprastha)
The renouncer (sannyasin)
