Apart from the sheer talent and skill of his gift, one thing I can truly appreciate about Cory when he is playing traditional gospel is his ability to "respect the genre." Obviously, he has the ability to incorporate all types of jazz riffs and chords, but again when playing gospel, he so tactfully and strategically places them such as not to sacrifice the overall authentic traditional gospel sound and feel.
What sets Cory head and shoulders apart from other organists is two things: 1) Study. Cory has CLEARLY studied the master pianists and organists from jazz, blues, and gospel. Their technique, their aesthetic, and their approaches. His are the most educated ears of anybody who sits at an organ. 2) Anointing. Along with his diligent study, practice and talent-- he also has a clear and strong anointing. There is a spirt behind his playing that other, very great organists, are missing. Cory Henry is among the greatest of all time-- there are few, if any, above him.
