The end scene, revealing what Oppenheimer and Einstein were talking about is my favorite scene in the movie. Einstein giving advices, we thought he was angry but no, he was glad to see Oppenheimer. And the scene where Murphy stood still, theorizing his work potentially ending the world is beyond insane.

The whole 20mins before the trinity test was the best buildup I’ve ever witnessed on screen. It didnt make it just a big explosion, it made it a properly impactful moment in history
That music when they were doing the final assembly, where you can hear a beat that sounds suspiciously like a Geiger Counter, IMHO is the best track in the film.

I tend to not be too into movies compared to most others but Oppenheimer is probably one of the most enrapturing films I’ve ever watched. It takes a lot of focus but it pays it back with magic

I saw Oppenheimer last night and was left completely speechless. At times it felt like a horror movie. Cillian Murphy delivers an all-time performance here. Some people will think it’s boring, but I was completely riveted the entire time.
The multiple recontextualizations of the interaction between Oppenheimer and Einstein was by far one of the greatest points of the movie (especially the final one)
There was a point maybe 75% of the way through that I started to run out of stamina from keeping track of everything, but then the final 30 minutes brought it all together so hard, like a star collapsing under its gravity. Kitty handling those questions, Strauss getting denied, Einstein and Oppenheimer's talk...so many satisfying moments that I didn't see coming from this film. Maybe not perfect, but damn did it hit me in a way I wasn't expecting.
I completely agree. I’ve never had a movie draw me in, get stale on me, and then draw me back in again. Edit: This will be less of a problem for me upon rewatch, me thinks.
@@megaharben it will, as someone who saw it for the 2nd time since I liked it, I can tell you its much easier to follow because you know all the characters and names so you dont have to use the same amount of brainpower to follow about who they are talking, making it more easy to digest
The moment when Oppenheimer is being interrogated and there’s a bright flash of light with the camera shaking was perfect. The scene was so intense and did a good job of putting the viewer inside of Oppenheimer’s head.
@@amuroray9115 Fr. Cillian did such a great job. Especially in the scene where Oppenheimer hears about Hiroshima and while everyone cheers about America’s victory you can see all the regret, fear, and anguish going through his head. Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr also killed it.

My favorite part was when Florence Pugh gets on her knees and tells Cillian Murphy "Sit back and let me give you this sloppy oppie" and he's like "yea gimme that sloppenheimer" and you hear Christopher Nolan ask the camera crew if they're getting all this on film

Honestly, best scene in the whole film was when his wife was being interrogated. The way she lulled the prosecutor guy into a false sense of being in control and think he was intimidating her and then she snaps on him. Terrific acting the entire movie.
That scene was great. So satisfying. Some really great scenes with Blunt and Pugh. My favorite was his speech to the team after the successful experiment and the way in which the practical impact of the creation is conveyed.
LITERALLY MY FAVORITE SCENE, made me wanna quit my well established career and attempt to act well knowing I’ll never be able to pull off a millionth of a fraction of Emily blunts talent in that scene and the whole movie!!!
Robert Downey Jr's scenes as Strauss made me wish he'd done more movies like this throughout his career. His acting surprised me and was so different from the marvel role hes been associated with most of his career. I can't wait to see him in more projects like this down the line. Emily Blunt surprised me too. I never liked her acting in the past, but this actually changed my mind, she was such a badass and played her role so well throughout the movie. The scene with her answering the questions was one of my favourites in the movie. Not that i care much about the academy awards, but I'd be VERY shocked if Cillian doesnt win an oscar for best leading actor, and RDJ/Emily Blunt at least get a nomination for best supporting actor/actress.

He was great at playing the non-obvious "bad guy". I don't think this was really a "bad guy" per se, but obviously was the antagonist. Quite interesting to see him play a much more complex character than Iron Man and he did it really well, I hope he will take more roles like it.
Never before have I felt so much tension in a movie theater. The music, the fact that you know whats gonna happen. The bomb scene was crafted *perfectly*
Very few movies give such a crisp theater experience. Some are pretty underwhelming but I can’t count how many times I lost it during Oppenheimer. The way you can FEEL the tension in the air and the way every single plot twist throws you for a loop. We need more movies like it, especially right now.
It sucked that they didnt show anything about Oppenheimers "obsession" about the Mahabaratha, Bhavad-gita etc. Its literally one of his inspirations in life. The ending of Oppenheimer is I’d say Nolan’s best ending to a film. The thought provoking nature is haunting and with the beautiful score by Ludwig Göransson it just leaves you speechless and stunned. This movie is a masterpiece, please go check it out for those who are willing to give it a chance
The entire movie, the conversation between Oppenheimer and Einstein is just hanging there in the back of your mind, and the reveal of what they actually said was genius.
It was a great ending, but come on. Memento or The Prestige take the cake there. And Inception has perhaps the most thought-provoking ending of any film ever.
Both the beginning of the movie with the Prometheus quote and the end when we get to finally hear what Oppenheimer and Einstein talked about at the pond sent chills down my spine!
The Prometheus quote was so fucking good. People will probably say it is corny but greek tragedies are such great stories, they warn us of what is bound to happen. Humans will never change and will always fall into the same traps over and over again.
The final scene (where Oppenheimer is taking to Einstein) is so impactful, what he says there really punched me in the face and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it.
The actual bomb sequence left me speechless. It was so excellently done that you could quite literally hear a pin drop in the theater when it was SILENT before the sounds of the bomb happened. And then the scene with Oppenheimer giving the speech in Los Alamos after the success of the trinity test was just a chef's kiss.
I was a background actor in the movie and I got to be there while both those sequences were shot, however cool they looked on screen, they were 100 times cooler behind the camera
My favorite scene was Oppy saying the famous quote, "I have now become death, the destroyer of worlds." in the nuke exploding before the shockwave from the nuke comes.
Loved the scene but I felt like the explosion itself was a bit underwhelming. There's actual footage of nuclear explosions, including the trinity test and it's far more impressive imo.
Even though they did not show the bombings but that brief moment where he loses it all was brutal af. Cillian's eye acting is god tier. I really hope he bags an Oscar for this.

The people cheering in the basketball court is my favorite scene, for me it’s the living embodiment of “few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.”
Currently a grad student in physics. The best way I would describe the science part was that this movie was definitely 20th Century physics porn. All of the old school chalkboards, dudes wearing suits all of the time, and the ˋmatrix´ over differential equations approach to solving problems in quantum mechanics was on point. I didn’t have time to read the equations in detail on the chalkboards but they looked correct. It was so refreshing seeing more than just the infinite square well, which is the introductory problem you first encounter in quantum, shown on the whiteboard which other movies have done. This movie is more than about Oppenheimer rather it is also about the narrative around the creation of quantum mechanics in the associated excitement that came along with it.
I'd argue there was virtually no physics. Very little even physics discussion. It was almost entirely about politics, and largely felt like a courtroom drama. I really wanted to enjoy this one. I love Nolan, I love history, I love science. I found myself bored almost the entire way through the movie though.
The minutes in the theatre after the bomb explodes of complete silence with everybody waiting for the sound of the explosion to come was some of the most suspenseful moments I’ve felt watching a movie. Just a pure masterclass film
The testing scene was so intense, and left me on the edge of my seat. Christopher Nolan really does know how to control his audience’s emotions. Fantastic film, and even better acting
yeah, but the reason the two movies released on the same day was out of pure spite and revenge from WB. Barbie is produced by WB and Nolan left WB for Universal instead, because WB treated Nolan poorly and released Tenet on streaming services the day it was released in cinemas without telling anyone. I guess WB's revenge plan backfired on them as whenever Barbie trended, Oppenheimer also trended
As a history enjoyer myself…I knew some things about Oppenheimer but the court and all the interrogation scenes just put more info in my brain and I loved every second of it
The A bomb testing scene was probably the most tense I've ever been in a theater. The countdown the music the silence and lastly the quote before the huge boom of the explosion. God it's a perfect moment

The atomic bomb power you're thinking of is from the hydrogen bombs of the 60s discussed in the movie as "too destructive" to pursue by openheimer. The photos you see of most tests are hydrogen bombs, and from decades after los alamos
First half (everything before los alamos) felt really disjointed for me, but once it got there things FLEW and I was hooked until the very end. The ending, oh man, that ending gave me the chills. Also, I don't know if this was intentional, but Oppenheimer and Strauss's conflict felt like it was framed like a nuclear war, one with mutually assured destruction.
Yea i felt chills too watching the last scene it was so good That i was theorizing myself into his perspective when the movie ended everyone was talking to each other ab the movie but man i wasnt able to talk only thinking in my mind for 5 minutes straight
The fact that Josh Peck and Josh Hartnett just snuck in the background and deliver good performances. This film just pulls you into the story and you don’t really see the actors.
The post-credits reveal that the last thing Einstein said to Oppenheimer was "It's MC-squaring time" was incredibly well-done, and I think bodes well for any sequels.
They did an outstanding job making the audience feel immerse in the film despite the non-linear chronology. The timings between each of the time jumps was just absolutely perfect.

Nolan is one of those last few directors that when he makes a film it often gets treated like a holiday is coming like Christmas came early... each film he makes is a gift to movie lovers.
The 20-second countdown to the trial explosion and the minutes of silence that ensued after was the most tension I have ever experienced in the theatre. The focus on specific sounds like breathing and movement - but never the explosion itself - was genius in personalising the story to Oppenheimer himself rather than the infamous image of the explosion. Brilliant film.

I think the people that complain about the Bomb just expected more of a tsar Bomb or generally bigger and more destructive explosion which it just wasn't
i agree the countdown, watching the people take cover, seeing the operator watching the voltage meters, all was extremely suspenful and really made people feel like they were about to witness great immense power ... then the explosion came... lol, huge letdown if you ask me ... the bright light had more effect than just showing a bunch of close-up 100x zoomed in footage of random fireballs ....
Avoiding spoilers, if we’re speaking about the same scene, that has to be my favourite or takeaway moment. Nolan turned simple back and forth dialogue into what felt like tense action.
I love how the film takes the stress of building the bomb and combines it with the fear of its power and the guilt and regret Oppenheimer had. These emotions made me more scared then any horror movie had. Edit: I was surprised they didn’t show the horrors of the bomb but, I realized that Nolan might’ve had trouble showing the actual scale of horror it unleashed. Also very few movies have shown the scene without it looking spectacular.

I wish the horrors and damages inflicted from the bombings were explored more in-depth and for longer

Also I feel like this whole film was oppenheimer being ridden with moral guilt. There was a scene in the grey board where he was really overwhelmed by roger robb questioning and causes him to have PTSD. Also the scene where he was talking with Truman, where he was talking in front of the public imagining the nuclear aftermath, the scene where he imagined the world map drowning after H-Bomb. The scene where he's looking at victim aftermath. Also the whole point of he becoming a martyr in the grey board hearing.

I've seen someone do a review of the film on a mental health point of view and they nailed the feeling of anxiety and ptsd Oppenheimer gets with his creation.
Throughout the majority of the movie I had the same feeling I get when I know I have made an enormous mistake. That stomach-dropping dread you get when you fucked up and you're only now realizing the ramifications of your actions.
Because the film sharply focuses on Oppenheimer’s changing mindset as the A-Bomb becomes a reality. Especially in the speech scene where the sound design overwhelms him with a sense of guilt and horror of his actions. Mixed with the visual aspects of replicating the flash burns and ashes hollow corpses of the bomb drop.
I didn’t feel that at all. The only scenes with real tension was the bomb and his victory speech/illusions. I don’t see what people keep hyping as anxiety enducing scenes. Go watch Uncut Gems if you want a heart attack with your film
I just watched it. I’m in awe. I can’t get over how they portrayed Oppenheimer’s slow realization of exactly what he’s made. The sound design behind his emotional moments is phenomenal. The stomping, the whooshing, everything shaking around him- actually amazing. I loved it.
It really seemed to me like Oppy was on the verge of having a nervous breakdown down in that scene, like it was all he could do to finish his speech and walk off into the night
I saw it last night, and I was blown away. The score, dialogue, character building, and essentially the whole movie was a privilege to experience. The entire cast brought this story to life in an incredible way, and you can tell that everyone was so passionate about this project and Oppenheimer’s story. I recognized almost every actor on screen which really showed that people realized the genius of Nolan’s vision and wanted to be a part of it, no matter how small the part was. I think everyone should give this movie a shot just in case it resonates with you.

For me it was Oppenheimer’s speech where he starts to hallucinate For a brief moment after the crowd stops clapping, you could hear a little girl screaming…that was one of the most horrific and stunning scenes I have ever watched
The movie was on a whole, a masterpiece. You could feel the tension in the the theatre whenever Oppenheimer was under pressure or guilt. And the ending, the talk he had with Einstein; it makes it all so perfect. The vision of what he might have done to the world with nuclear bombs, and the conversation finally revealing what the viewers had been in mystery of throughout the entire film.
There were only two words spoken by the audience in my theater during the show last friday - both of them were the same guy just saying "Fuck." in a really bedraggled tone during a quiet scene. And I completely felt it.
Def agree on the characters and names. Ending up being a little difficult to know who was being referenced, but not the fault of the movie. The fast pace was great and kept you on your feet. If anything going into the movie with some knowledge about the people surrounding Robert would help that. Amazing movie, at least a 9/10, 10 for me because I love the fast paced historical drama and story plus the amazing soundtrack
I read an 800 page book on it.... And still can't keep track of them. So many scientists contributed to the project, or the science leading up to it. Frankly I think it's unfair to make a movie just about Oppenheimer, because it would have happened with or without him. I think Groves was probably the most instrumental in moving the proverbial mountain.
Saw it friday morning. Utterly insane. The way that Nolan managed to get the viewer to connect to the feeling and emotions of Oppenheimer while also showing the story of him in favor of JUST being about the bomb and more about himself is honestly insanely well done. Honest props to Nolan for this movie. It was the culmination of his work, and this was his pinnacle. Instant classic in my eyes.
The build up to the explosion is probably the most suspenseful scene I’ve ever watched in a film. Absolutely astonishing movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, please go watch it. Charlie was right about it not being everyone’s cup of tea, but I guarantee that there are multiple scenes in this movie that everyone can and should enjoy.

I watched Oppenheimer earlier today, and I loved every part of it, Cillian Murphy was an excellent casting choice and crushed his role, as did most of the actors. It truly was "the bomb", despite not being solely about THE bomb.
The trinity test scene. The silence in the room was SURREAL. Everyone kept their breath still. And then you see the light, with this silence,so freaking intense, you understand the overstepping of the humanity and then the Boom. Absolutely surreal.
The balls it took to cast the guy from Drake and josh to be one of the main focal points in one of the most important scenes in the movie, and he nailed it. Genius casting all over the place in this movie
Oppenheimer was a masterpiece, it was genuinely a work of art for a movie. I felt like Danny DeVito when he was crying saying “I get it” at the dance. Such a fantastic movie and story of Dr.Oppenheimer. Also how on earth was the explosion not CGI. How did they do it
The nice thing about Nolans movies are that if you understood it all you feel like an absolute genius because there is so much information crammed into 2-3 hours.
He's basically guaranteed to get nominated at this point, given all the praise. Whether he'll win: quite possibly, but there's certainly some strong competition this year (Killers of The Flower Moon, for ex.)
Cillian is so underrated. His Peaky Blinders performance was amazing, and then his performance as Oppenheimer is even better. Hope Cillian will be playing in the Fallout show directed by Nolan, or the 40k show/movie so he can act with Henry Cavill.
this film is definitely one of those movies that stays in your mind for a while. that scene during the celebration speech mixed with oppenheimer’s panicked thoughts and realisation of what had actually happened gave me chills, and so did a lot of other scenes. the ending was perfect too, loved it
The moment when they asked Oppenheimer "you had sex with her didn't you?" And oppenheimer just ripped his clothes off and said "yes, i did" before railing jean tatley in public shed a tear before my eyes, truly one of the best movies of all time.
The beginning of the movie definitely had you hit the ground running, throwing four different scenarios at you with little to no context. I could see how it could get overwhelming (especially if you had no clue who Oppenheimer was prior to the film) but it unfolds everything really well if you stick to it. Great film.
I remember in history class in high school doing a report on Oppenheimer and thinking "God, this could make an awesome movie..." It's been almost 15 years and I'm so stoked that it's not only a reality, but a great film at that.

The most scary moment is when Oppenheimer talked to the group of scientists when they talked about ending the project after Germany's surrendering. He instead told everyone to continue, because the world could not see their vision, thus they had to demonstrate how terrifying that vision turned out.
This movie really is the fastest a 3 hour has gone by. This movie felt lightning fast. I was never bored. That’s an accomplishment on behalf of the filmmakers, and also a product of the fact that there was A LOT to get through. There are several points in the movie I felt were outright underdeveloped. Oppenheimer has two major romantic interests in the film and those arcs don’t breathe at all. But if you gave them more development, you’d be adding even more runtime to this beast. Don’t let 3 runtime fool you. This movie is a breeze

This is the most excitement I have felt about a movie in years. I can't even think of the last time I was even interested about a movie coming out. Barbie and Oppenheimer really bought back that same fun and excitement that we used to feel about movies back in the day. It was nice to have a few months full of fun, anticipation and excitement.
I feel like Oppenheimer is a movie where plot is not as important as it sounds like, or atleast compared to other Nolan films. Its a movie that you need to feel, and to experience its greatness you definitely have to watch it on the big screens. Those who are not planning to watch it on the big screens are gonna miss what I'm talking about
Which is why , even though I'm a poor student with like 300$ to my name, I plan on getting the IMAX experience next week, I considered whether to just get the regular screen experience for less or even to pirate it later, but what the hell, you got to live a little once in a while, and I doubt I'll regret it.
I saw it in IMAX and I'm kinda sad that it was probably the only time I'd be able to experience that movie in that context. The sight and the sound, the vibrations of the whole theater, I'll never have that again.
I think knowing Oppenheimer’s story before going to this film let’s you appreciate a lot of it. Knowing ahead of time about locations or people let me concentrate on more complex aspects of his story which was great
I thought the same thing. This did not feel like a 3-hour movie, more like 2 hours. There was no boring part in the middle like a lot of movies have. It was enthralling start-to-finish.

Regarding the long list of names and characters, I liked that when a character was mentioned who wasn’t in that scene, they would flashback to show their face, it allows the audience to remember easier and keep track because we remember faces and what those people did, easier than their names
This was one of the best movies I have seen in a while, and incredibly engaging for a three hour movie. I picked up the book “American Prometheus,” which Oppenheimer was based on, right after leaving the theater because I wanted more of this story.

Before that, for decades-they saw each other as merely acquaintances and peers in their fields of study who respected each other. They stood on opposite ends of nearly everything they believed in and didn’t see eye to eye. It wasn’t until the end of Albert’s life that they got much closer and really became friends. Oppenheimer says it himself after Einstein passes away, you can look it up yourself if you want.
This film absolutely flew by. I even asked my wife after if it felt like three hours and she didn’t think so either. I don’t know the last time I saw a film where every single second felt like it had to be there. No fluff whatsoever. I’d be very surprised if Cillian Murphy doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for this.
This was the first movie that left me literally stunned once the credits rolled. I was just frozen and started tearing up. Safe to say that Nolan got the reaction he wanted outta me.

Nolan has always structured his films in very interesting ways. I don't know if he could've pulled this film off if he had done it any earlier than he did...meaning this is definitely a culmination of years of experience. 3 hours of mostly just dialogue but that, the acting, and phenomenal music kept me intrigued the entire time. Whereas Tenet lost me very early in its message. Here I felt the stakes. I felt the intensity. And almost everything in the film is chaotic except for the few seconds of silence during the Trinity test.
Charlie is absolutely spitting about the 3 hours flying away quickly. It starts a bit slow but literally after the 2nd half its all very tense & quick like a typical Nolan film. A 10/10 by Nolan as always.
I loved that they included his narration of the “I am become death” quote when Oppenheimer sees the mushroom cloud. Fits perfectly with that interview in the 60’s when he reflected on that moment and said he thought of that scripture as that moment happened before his very eyes.
I kinda wish Nolan hadn't used the audio from the previous time Oppenheimer said it, cause you could hear the background audio of that scene bleedthrough, I guess he may have done that intentionally, to kinda reinforce this is Oppenheimer referencing that memory, but it just didn't sound as clean

It was pretty hard for me to tell what was going on for a really good portion of the movie, but it was so beautiful and the music and audio was so captivating that I didn't really care lol. It was so beautiful. I want to see it again, for the reasons I liked, but also maybe I'll understand more of what happened.
My favorite scenes were the ones where the viewer can see what's happening inside Oppenheimer's mind, the way Robert imagines particles and waves moving together, colliding, all those colors and forms. These were the scenes of great insight, and I wish there was more of them. But again, the film is already 3 hours long :)
The line at the beginning of "its nkt about of you can read the music, its if you can you hear the music" paired with those visuals in scenes before and after that gave me chills. That's when I knew this was gonna be a banger
Even as someone who knew like a decent amount of Oppenheimer’s story, the movie was still super engaging. Maybe not the most innovative or unique movie of the year, but certainly the best executed movie of the year.
Nope, thats Mission Impossible. Oppenheimer just dragged in parts, and the whole Florence Pugh storyline was completely unnesessary. Also, they advertised it as "Trinity test" film, not "security clearance hearing" film, which is a bit cheating. Still, when the movie worked, it worked tremendously and it looks stunning. I would just trim half hour off it.

I was not exactly an avid fan of his (except Memento), but he made huge effort here to convert even non-believers like me. It was a special experience in IMAX and I'll certainly rewatch it later. It felt like this is the first movie where Nolan explores what's in somebody else's head rather that his own, and his filmmaking just improved from that. I think this is his step into big league with Kubrick, Kurosawa, Ford, Scorsese, Coppola and other masters of film. BUT. Was it better executed that MI7? Not for me. These are different films with different goals. While new MI strikes every bullseye for action flick there is, Oppenheimer, undoubtedly a greater and more serious film, has some issues. The storytelling is unparalleled, but honestly how many people wanted it to be more a production/legal drama than a psychological/existential movie about the weight of the world-changing creation on your shoulders? I give credit to Nolan for not being a conformist and making it about Trinity, but the movie certainly wasn't advertised that way, although I admit this is the most riveting clearance hearing on film. The Los Alamos scenes we got though were gold from start to finish. And of course THAT moment is just stunning. A couple times the pacing of the movie was slowed down by scenes that could be left on cutting floor without much harm; the scene where he had to read his most googled quote between Florence Pugh boobs was just tacky (this is the only time I think a bit clunky storytelling device of "old" Nolan sticks out). However, my main grip is with central conflict of the character. I won't pretend to know a lot about Oppie, but was the destroyed career the main drama of his life? The scene where he gives a speech and world shatters around him is AMAZING. Why didn't movie focus more on that self-reflection on his creation? This is what intrigues me most about this man. Anyway, tl;dr, was this movie great filmmaking? Absolutely. Was it perfectly executed? In my opinion, absolutely not. Ok now, sorry for wasting your time, you ADHD twats.
I also feel the movie really makes you ask yourself questions about our current situation, especially with the context of a war on European soil, the growing tensions in Africa and Asia. And the ever looming threat of nuclear destruction
this film was one of the best pieces i've watched ever. I loved how they managed to tell his story very fast-paced but kept the audience in loop and didn't lose me once.
I loved the ending which set up the Nolan Multi-verse "Oppy, I must go now" "Where, Albert?" "All I have for you is a gesture in combination with a word, Tenet"
I agree with the audio mixing, I genuinely couldn't hear a lot of dialogue throughout the entire movie. I asked my friends if they also had a similar issue and they also agreed that there were times that they couldn't hear some dialogue. The acting was phenomenal and there are a lot of scenes that can be listed as some of the best scenes in the movie, which isn't common in a lot of films that I've watched. I also agree that there were a ton of characters and I did get lost at times but it's also the reality, a lot of people took part in the Manhattan Project and were influential in how things developed. All in all, I would give the movie a solid 8/10 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would consider rewatching it for sure. I did fall asleep a couple times but that would be because I was running on 2 hours sleep so I wouldn't hold it against the movie at all. Towards the last hour of the movie I was hooked and on the edge of my seat due to the climax of several situations all at once, extraordinary work.
Audio issues could be several things where you went and were sat etc cause the one I went to I heard all dialogue clearly and no Audio mixing was off really

I also spoke to several other friends who have watched the movie and was also told that they had some issues with hearing. Several other reviews also mention that there seemed to be audio mixing issues and it was simply attributed to being the Christopher Nolan effect due to it apparently being an issue in several other movies of his.
Ending was extremely fantastic. At first, you wouldn't know why Nolan would keep repeating that *certain scene* so many times. But as the story unfolds with more context, each re-viewing shapes into something more and more different... until the final puzzle piece joins together to complete everything. Amazingly executed, overall.
For the record. The parts where the score or other parts of the sound effects drown out dialogue are meant to represent how loud it is in the environment. Sort of showing it is overwhelming for oppy or whomever is listening. Thats how it felt in the movie to me and thats what nolan was going for. Ge has stated that he tries to make sure the dialogue that gets drowned out isnt too important. Nolan has also said he mixes his audio in a way that in theaters with high quality surround sound will have the best experience. Sometimes leaving lesser theaters behind.
One part of the sound design I loved is the sound of a Geiger counter intensifying as they assembled the bomb and raised it for the trinity test, with warning bleeps playing as it got close. Awesome detail to have mixed into the track.
I think they kinda got that idea from when you encase nuclear material in neutron reflector material it makes the geiger counter go wild the more you encase it. Which are experiments that have gone wrong when scientists dropped the material and got hit by a massive dose of radiation. But that's just my thought, even though that wouldn't happen with those explosives, but using it to represent the construction of the bomb not just with visuals, but with sound is a great choice of Nolan indeed.
I think it's because of how they paced the movie. There are so many fast cuts and ways that they show context by flashing to different characters, the movie ends up feeling like it flies by
The character confusion was my big issue. I had a hard time remembering what those characters did or what the relationship dynamic was with Oppenheimer. A few who got more time stood out, but most the time I was just confused on who they were, especially with the time jumping.
I watched it 2 times in this week bcs of different friend group , and I gotta say the second time I watched it everything really clicked for me since I remember who was who better and it was a better viewing experience
thats basically the thing with christopher nolan films, if you go into it simply trying to absorb the movie like other movies then you'll miss alot, for me the films feel less like storybooks and more like textbooks, except instead of being boring its like a textbook with all the applicable, interesting and fun topics, a basic level of understanding in history (varies depending what nolan film youre watching, but physics applies to like all of them) also helps alot
Hands down the 'Teller dripping with sunscreen' scene will live with me forever. Remember, he isn't the 'destroyer of worlds' in the quote, he is the prince doing his duties. 😉
What I love is how Nolan doesn’t use CGI, Ik everyone knows the bomb was real, inception rotating room was an actual room, and what’s also unique is for Interstellar Nolan spent 100k Usd on a cornfield just for those scenes and sold the corn right after. Everything being real IMO really makes the film feel real and I love it

The end scene, revealing what Oppenheimer and Einstein were talking about is my favorite scene in the movie. Einstein giving advices, we thought he was angry but no, he was glad to see Oppenheimer. And the scene where Murphy stood still, theorizing his work potentially ending the world is beyond insane.
That was such a Nolan move I loved it, how he tied the different timelines together leading to that last moment.

There was a point maybe 75% of the way through that I started to run out of stamina from keeping track of everything, but then the final 30 minutes brought it all together so hard, like a star collapsing under its gravity.
Kitty handling those questions, Strauss getting denied, Einstein and Oppenheimer's talk...so many satisfying moments that I didn't see coming from this film. Maybe not perfect, but damn did it hit me in a way I wasn't expecting.

The moment when Oppenheimer is being interrogated and there’s a bright flash of light with the camera shaking was perfect. The scene was so intense and did a good job of putting the viewer inside of Oppenheimer’s head.

Honestly, best scene in the whole film was when his wife was being interrogated. The way she lulled the prosecutor guy into a false sense of being in control and think he was intimidating her and then she snaps on him. Terrific acting the entire movie.
That scene was great. So satisfying. Some really great scenes with Blunt and Pugh.
My favorite was his speech to the team after the successful experiment and the way in which the practical impact of the creation is conveyed.
LITERALLY MY FAVORITE SCENE, made me wanna quit my well established career and attempt to act well knowing I’ll never be able to pull off a millionth of a fraction of Emily blunts talent in that scene and the whole movie!!!

Robert Downey Jr's scenes as Strauss made me wish he'd done more movies like this throughout his career. His acting surprised me and was so different from the marvel role hes been associated with most of his career. I can't wait to see him in more projects like this down the line. Emily Blunt surprised me too. I never liked her acting in the past, but this actually changed my mind, she was such a badass and played her role so well throughout the movie. The scene with her answering the questions was one of my favourites in the movie.
Not that i care much about the academy awards, but I'd be VERY shocked if Cillian doesnt win an oscar for best leading actor, and RDJ/Emily Blunt at least get a nomination for best supporting actor/actress.

Very few movies give such a crisp theater experience. Some are pretty underwhelming but I can’t count how many times I lost it during Oppenheimer. The way you can FEEL the tension in the air and the way every single plot twist throws you for a loop. We need more movies like it, especially right now.
Every single actor did a phenomenal job! The fact they all brought an intense and realistic atmosphere into this movie is commendable.
It sucked that they didnt show anything about Oppenheimers "obsession" about the Mahabaratha, Bhavad-gita etc.

The ending of Oppenheimer is I’d say Nolan’s best ending to a film. The thought provoking nature is haunting and with the beautiful score by Ludwig Göransson it just leaves you speechless and stunned. This movie is a masterpiece, please go check it out for those who are willing to give it a chance

The actual bomb sequence left me speechless. It was so excellently done that you could quite literally hear a pin drop in the theater when it was SILENT before the sounds of the bomb happened. And then the scene with Oppenheimer giving the speech in Los Alamos after the success of the trinity test was just a chef's kiss.
I was a background actor in the movie and I got to be there while both those sequences were shot, however cool they looked on screen, they were 100 times cooler behind the camera
My favorite scene was Oppy saying the famous quote, "I have now become death, the destroyer of worlds." in the nuke exploding before the shockwave from the nuke comes.
Loved the scene but I felt like the explosion itself was a bit underwhelming. There's actual footage of nuclear explosions, including the trinity test and it's far more impressive imo.

For me that part of the quote was always more impactful than the whole "I am become death" part. Something so chilling about it.

Currently a grad student in physics. The best way I would describe the science part was that this movie was definitely 20th Century physics porn. All of the old school chalkboards, dudes wearing suits all of the time, and the ˋmatrix´ over differential equations approach to solving problems in quantum mechanics was on point. I didn’t have time to read the equations in detail on the chalkboards but they looked correct. It was so refreshing seeing more than just the infinite square well, which is the introductory problem you first encounter in quantum, shown on the whiteboard which other movies have done. This movie is more than about Oppenheimer rather it is also about the narrative around the creation of quantum mechanics in the associated excitement that came along with it.
It's absolutely insane how short of a time it took to go from the discovery of quantum mechanics to the creation of the first atom bomb.
I'd argue there was virtually no physics. Very little even physics discussion. It was almost entirely about politics, and largely felt like a courtroom drama.
I really wanted to enjoy this one. I love Nolan, I love history, I love science. I found myself bored almost the entire way through the movie though.

The atomic bomb power you're thinking of is from the hydrogen bombs of the 60s discussed in the movie as "too destructive" to pursue by openheimer. The photos you see of most tests are hydrogen bombs, and from decades after los alamos
First half (everything before los alamos) felt really disjointed for me, but once it got there things FLEW and I was hooked until the very end. The ending, oh man, that ending gave me the chills. Also, I don't know if this was intentional, but Oppenheimer and Strauss's conflict felt like it was framed like a nuclear war, one with mutually assured destruction.
Knowing Nolan I guarantee it was intentional, and it was wonderfully done

The fact that Josh Peck and Josh Hartnett just snuck in the background and deliver good performances. This film just pulls you into the story and you don’t really see the actors.

Using black-and-white for the events in the 50s and color for the 20s, 30s, and 40s was a brilliant choice to help with understanding the continuity.
Nolan is one of those last few directors that when he makes a film it often gets treated like a holiday is coming like Christmas came early... each film he makes is a gift to movie lovers.

The 20-second countdown to the trial explosion and the minutes of silence that ensued after was the most tension I have ever experienced in the theatre. The focus on specific sounds like breathing and movement - but never the explosion itself - was genius in personalising the story to Oppenheimer himself rather than the infamous image of the explosion. Brilliant film.
I thought the explosion failed to show the gravity of what they unleashed on the world, but okay, guy.

i agree the countdown, watching the people take cover, seeing the operator watching the voltage meters, all was extremely suspenful and really made people feel like they were about to witness great immense power ... then the explosion came... lol, huge letdown if you ask me ... the bright light had more effect than just showing a bunch of close-up 100x zoomed in footage of random fireballs ....
Emily Blunt was so damn good especially at the end when she has a lot of dialogue for a certain situation.
Avoiding spoilers, if we’re speaking about the same scene, that has to be my favourite or takeaway moment. Nolan turned simple back and forth dialogue into what felt like tense action.
I love how the film takes the stress of building the bomb and combines it with the fear of its power and the guilt and regret Oppenheimer had. These emotions made me more scared then any horror movie had.
Edit: I was surprised they didn’t show the horrors of the bomb but, I realized that Nolan might’ve had trouble showing the actual scale of horror it unleashed. Also very few movies have shown the scene without it looking spectacular.

I've seen someone do a review of the film on a mental health point of view and they nailed the feeling of anxiety and ptsd Oppenheimer gets with his creation.
Throughout the majority of the movie I had the same feeling I get when I know I have made an enormous mistake. That stomach-dropping dread you get when you fucked up and you're only now realizing the ramifications of your actions.
Shit I had anxiety on the 45 minute drive home.
Because the film sharply focuses on Oppenheimer’s changing mindset as the A-Bomb becomes a reality. Especially in the speech scene where the sound design overwhelms him with a sense of guilt and horror of his actions. Mixed with the visual aspects of replicating the flash burns and ashes hollow corpses of the bomb drop.
I didn’t feel that at all. The only scenes with real tension was the bomb and his victory speech/illusions. I don’t see what people keep hyping as anxiety enducing scenes. Go watch Uncut Gems if you want a heart attack with your film

I just watched it. I’m in awe. I can’t get over how they portrayed Oppenheimer’s slow realization of exactly what he’s made. The sound design behind his emotional moments is phenomenal. The stomping, the whooshing, everything shaking around him- actually amazing. I loved it.
It really seemed to me like Oppy was on the verge of having a nervous breakdown down in that scene, like it was all he could do to finish his speech and walk off into the night
I saw it last night, and I was blown away. The score, dialogue, character building, and essentially the whole movie was a privilege to experience. The entire cast brought this story to life in an incredible way, and you can tell that everyone was so passionate about this project and Oppenheimer’s story. I recognized almost every actor on screen which really showed that people realized the genius of Nolan’s vision and wanted to be a part of it, no matter how small the part was. I think everyone should give this movie a shot just in case it resonates with you.

The movie was on a whole, a masterpiece. You could feel the tension in the the theatre whenever Oppenheimer was under pressure or guilt. And the ending, the talk he had with Einstein; it makes it all so perfect. The vision of what he might have done to the world with nuclear bombs, and the conversation finally revealing what the viewers had been in mystery of throughout the entire film.
There were only two words spoken by the audience in my theater during the show last friday - both of them were the same guy just saying "Fuck." in a really bedraggled tone during a quiet scene. And I completely felt it.
Masterpiece? Wow, I guess we see things differently. I found it an insufferable mess that I walked out of before it was over. To each their own.

Def agree on the characters and names. Ending up being a little difficult to know who was being referenced, but not the fault of the movie. The fast pace was great and kept you on your feet. If anything going into the movie with some knowledge about the people surrounding Robert would help that. Amazing movie, at least a 9/10, 10 for me because I love the fast paced historical drama and story plus the amazing soundtrack

I read an 800 page book on it.... And still can't keep track of them. So many scientists contributed to the project, or the science leading up to it. Frankly I think it's unfair to make a movie just about Oppenheimer, because it would have happened with or without him. I think Groves was probably the most instrumental in moving the proverbial mountain.
Saw it friday morning. Utterly insane. The way that Nolan managed to get the viewer to connect to the feeling and emotions of Oppenheimer while also showing the story of him in favor of JUST being about the bomb and more about himself is honestly insanely well done.
Honest props to Nolan for this movie. It was the culmination of his work, and this was his pinnacle. Instant classic in my eyes.
The build up to the explosion is probably the most suspenseful scene I’ve ever watched in a film. Absolutely astonishing movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, please go watch it. Charlie was right about it not being everyone’s cup of tea, but I guarantee that there are multiple scenes in this movie that everyone can and should enjoy.

The beginning of the movie definitely had you hit the ground running, throwing four different scenarios at you with little to no context. I could see how it could get overwhelming (especially if you had no clue who Oppenheimer was prior to the film) but it unfolds everything really well if you stick to it. Great film.
I remember in history class in high school doing a report on Oppenheimer and thinking "God, this could make an awesome movie..." It's been almost 15 years and I'm so stoked that it's not only a reality, but a great film at that.

At the end, when Oppenheimer said: "Maybe the real atom bomb were the friends we made along the way..." I almost cried... truly a masterpiece!
The most scary moment is when Oppenheimer talked to the group of scientists when they talked about ending the project after Germany's surrendering. He instead told everyone to continue, because the world could not see their vision, thus they had to demonstrate how terrifying that vision turned out.
This movie really is the fastest a 3 hour has gone by. This movie felt lightning fast. I was never bored. That’s an accomplishment on behalf of the filmmakers, and also a product of the fact that there was A LOT to get through. There are several points in the movie I felt were outright underdeveloped. Oppenheimer has two major romantic interests in the film and those arcs don’t breathe at all. But if you gave them more development, you’d be adding even more runtime to this beast. Don’t let 3 runtime fool you. This movie is a breeze

I feel like Oppenheimer is a movie where plot is not as important as it sounds like, or atleast compared to other Nolan films. Its a movie that you need to feel, and to experience its greatness you definitely have to watch it on the big screens. Those who are not planning to watch it on the big screens are gonna miss what I'm talking about
Which is why , even though I'm a poor student with like 300$ to my name, I plan on getting the IMAX experience next week, I considered whether to just get the regular screen experience for less or even to pirate it later, but what the hell, you got to live a little once in a while, and I doubt I'll regret it.
I saw it in IMAX and I'm kinda sad that it was probably the only time I'd be able to experience that movie in that context. The sight and the sound, the vibrations of the whole theater, I'll never have that again.
I think knowing Oppenheimer’s story before going to this film let’s you appreciate a lot of it. Knowing ahead of time about locations or people let me concentrate on more complex aspects of his story which was great

Regarding the long list of names and characters, I liked that when a character was mentioned who wasn’t in that scene, they would flashback to show their face, it allows the audience to remember easier and keep track because we remember faces and what those people did, easier than their names
This was one of the best movies I have seen in a while, and incredibly engaging for a three hour movie. I picked up the book “American Prometheus,” which Oppenheimer was based on, right after leaving the theater because I wanted more of this story.

This film absolutely flew by. I even asked my wife after if it felt like three hours and she didn’t think so either. I don’t know the last time I saw a film where every single second felt like it had to be there. No fluff whatsoever. I’d be very surprised if Cillian Murphy doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for this.

This was the first movie that left me literally stunned once the credits rolled. I was just frozen and started tearing up. Safe to say that Nolan got the reaction he wanted outta me.
Stfu i guarantee you didn’t understand at least 40% of the movie seeing as its a boring ass confusing ass mess. Don’t act like boring ass politics and confusing dialogue scenes made you ‘tear up’. People are only rating this movie so highly because of the rotten tomatoes rating, the media going on about it and the director. If you watched the exact same film and it was made by a different director with a rotten tomatoes score of like 60% you would cal the movie boring and confusing

Nolan has always structured his films in very interesting ways. I don't know if he could've pulled this film off if he had done it any earlier than he did...meaning this is definitely a culmination of years of experience. 3 hours of mostly just dialogue but that, the acting, and phenomenal music kept me intrigued the entire time. Whereas Tenet lost me very early in its message. Here I felt the stakes. I felt the intensity. And almost everything in the film is chaotic except for the few seconds of silence during the Trinity test.
Charlie is absolutely spitting about the 3 hours flying away quickly. It starts a bit slow but literally after the 2nd half its all very tense & quick like a typical Nolan film. A 10/10 by Nolan as always.
I loved that they included his narration of the “I am become death” quote when Oppenheimer sees the mushroom cloud. Fits perfectly with that interview in the 60’s when he reflected on that moment and said he thought of that scripture as that moment happened before his very eyes.
I kinda wish Nolan hadn't used the audio from the previous time Oppenheimer said it, cause you could hear the background audio of that scene bleedthrough, I guess he may have done that intentionally, to kinda reinforce this is Oppenheimer referencing that memory, but it just didn't sound as clean
@@TEAserOneI think he did that to reference Jean Tatlock specifically, because she had such an impact in Oppenheimer's life. He asked her to marry him multiple times but she always said no, then he met Kitty.
It was pretty hard for me to tell what was going on for a really good portion of the movie, but it was so beautiful and the music and audio was so captivating that I didn't really care lol. It was so beautiful. I want to see it again, for the reasons I liked, but also maybe I'll understand more of what happened.
I watched it twice, the second time makes so much more sense but still feels fresh. Highly recommended.

My favorite scenes were the ones where the viewer can see what's happening inside Oppenheimer's mind, the way Robert imagines particles and waves moving together, colliding, all those colors and forms. These were the scenes of great insight, and I wish there was more of them. But again, the film is already 3 hours long :)
The line at the beginning of "its nkt about of you can read the music, its if you can you hear the music" paired with those visuals in scenes before and after that gave me chills. That's when I knew this was gonna be a banger

Even as someone who knew like a decent amount of Oppenheimer’s story, the movie was still super engaging. Maybe not the most innovative or unique movie of the year, but certainly the best executed movie of the year.
Nope, thats Mission Impossible. Oppenheimer just dragged in parts, and the whole Florence Pugh storyline was completely unnesessary. Also, they advertised it as "Trinity test" film, not "security clearance hearing" film, which is a bit cheating.
Still, when the movie worked, it worked tremendously and it looks stunning. I would just trim half hour off it.

Oppenheimer is a GREAT movie. It's intelligent, artful, beautiful to look at and IMO Nolan's best. I was not exactly an avid fan of his (except Memento), but he made huge effort here to convert even non-believers like me. It was a special experience in IMAX and I'll certainly rewatch it later. It felt like this is the first movie where Nolan explores what's in somebody else's head rather that his own, and his filmmaking just improved from that. I think this is his step into big league with Kubrick, Kurosawa, Ford, Scorsese, Coppola and other masters of film.
BUT. Was it better executed that MI7? Not for me. These are different films with different goals. While new MI strikes every bullseye for action flick there is, Oppenheimer, undoubtedly a greater and more serious film, has some issues. The storytelling is unparalleled, but honestly how many people wanted it to be more a production/legal drama than a psychological/existential movie about the weight of the world-changing creation on your shoulders? I give credit to Nolan for not being a conformist and making it about Trinity, but the movie certainly wasn't advertised that way, although I admit this is the most riveting clearance hearing on film. The Los Alamos scenes we got though were gold from start to finish. And of course THAT moment is just stunning.
A couple times the pacing of the movie was slowed down by scenes that could be left on cutting floor without much harm; the scene where he had to read his most googled quote between Florence Pugh boobs was just tacky (this is the only time I think a bit clunky storytelling device of "old" Nolan sticks out). However, my main grip is with central conflict of the character. I won't pretend to know a lot about Oppie, but was the destroyed career the main drama of his life? The scene where he gives a speech and world shatters around him is AMAZING. Why didn't movie focus more on that self-reflection on his creation? This is what intrigues me most about this man.
Anyway, tl;dr, was this movie great filmmaking? Absolutely. Was it perfectly executed? In my opinion, absolutely not. Ok now, sorry for wasting your time, you ADHD twats.
The fact that you know what will happen and still feel tension for some historical moments says allot about Christopher Nolan’s skill. Amazing movie.
I also feel the movie really makes you ask yourself questions about our current situation, especially with the context of a war on European soil, the growing tensions in Africa and Asia.
And the ever looming threat of nuclear destruction
As someone who has taken a few physics classes, I can say I loved seeing alot of scientists! Alot of people I look up to made apperances!

I agree with the audio mixing, I genuinely couldn't hear a lot of dialogue throughout the entire movie. I asked my friends if they also had a similar issue and they also agreed that there were times that they couldn't hear some dialogue.
The acting was phenomenal and there are a lot of scenes that can be listed as some of the best scenes in the movie, which isn't common in a lot of films that I've watched.
I also agree that there were a ton of characters and I did get lost at times but it's also the reality, a lot of people took part in the Manhattan Project and were influential in how things developed.
All in all, I would give the movie a solid 8/10 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would consider rewatching it for sure.
I did fall asleep a couple times but that would be because I was running on 2 hours sleep so I wouldn't hold it against the movie at all. Towards the last hour of the movie I was hooked and on the edge of my seat due to the climax of several situations all at once, extraordinary work.
Audio issues could be several things where you went and were sat etc cause the one I went to I heard all dialogue clearly and no Audio mixing was off really
@@callumnorris3738 I watched it in IMAX and was sat in the centre of the middle row. I also spoke to several other friends who have watched the movie and was also told that they had some issues with hearing.
Several other reviews also mention that there seemed to be audio mixing issues and it was simply attributed to being the Christopher Nolan effect due to it apparently being an issue in several other movies of his.
I had no issues with the audio mixing in my local cinema, so it may have been an issue in your cinema
The ending of this movie gave me proper goosebumps. One simple line but the implications....shivers

Ending was extremely fantastic.
At first, you wouldn't know why Nolan would keep repeating that *certain scene* so many times. But as the story unfolds with more context, each re-viewing shapes into something more and more different... until the final puzzle piece joins together to complete everything. Amazingly executed, overall.

For the record. The parts where the score or other parts of the sound effects drown out dialogue are meant to represent how loud it is in the environment. Sort of showing it is overwhelming for oppy or whomever is listening. Thats how it felt in the movie to me and thats what nolan was going for. Ge has stated that he tries to make sure the dialogue that gets drowned out isnt too important. Nolan has also said he mixes his audio in a way that in theaters with high quality surround sound will have the best experience. Sometimes leaving lesser theaters behind.
One part of the sound design I loved is the sound of a Geiger counter intensifying as they assembled the bomb and raised it for the trinity test, with warning bleeps playing as it got close. Awesome detail to have mixed into the track.
I think they kinda got that idea from when you encase nuclear material in neutron reflector material it makes the geiger counter go wild the more you encase it.
Which are experiments that have gone wrong when scientists dropped the material and got hit by a massive dose of radiation.
But that's just my thought, even though that wouldn't happen with those explosives, but using it to represent the construction of the bomb not just with visuals, but with sound is a great choice of Nolan indeed.
Watched it 30 mins ago, what a brilliant direction. The acting, music, story it's just amazing.
It was such a stunning film and one of the few times a film earned a three hour run time and used every second perfectly.

I think it's because of how they paced the movie. There are so many fast cuts and ways that they show context by flashing to different characters, the movie ends up feeling like it flies by
The character confusion was my big issue. I had a hard time remembering what those characters did or what the relationship dynamic was with Oppenheimer. A few who got more time stood out, but most the time I was just confused on who they were, especially with the time jumping.
Well, to appreciate it to the max, you really need to be both a physics nerd and a history nerd.
I watched it 2 times in this week bcs of different friend group , and I gotta say the second time I watched it everything really clicked for me since I remember who was who better and it was a better viewing experience
thats basically the thing with christopher nolan films, if you go into it simply trying to absorb the movie like other movies then you'll miss alot, for me the films feel less like storybooks and more like textbooks, except instead of being boring its like a textbook with all the applicable, interesting and fun topics, a basic level of understanding in history (varies depending what nolan film youre watching, but physics applies to like all of them) also helps alot
Hands down the 'Teller dripping with sunscreen' scene will live with me forever.
Remember, he isn't the 'destroyer of worlds' in the quote, he is the prince doing his duties. 😉
What I love is how Nolan doesn’t use CGI, Ik everyone knows the bomb was real, inception rotating room was an actual room, and what’s also unique is for Interstellar Nolan spent 100k Usd on a cornfield just for those scenes and sold the corn right after. Everything being real IMO really makes the film feel real and I love it
