    17:00 Simon notices that the math of "45 - 5x" but never gets to the point of using it again after he gets the 5-cage to get the value of the dot "45 - 5 = 5x". It's a classic Simon-move, getting some really nice logic in and then finding some other even more complicated logic to find a solution.

      This is definitely one of those shouting at the screen moments. Simon was too focused on the middle six cell sum to notice the forced mathematical solution imposed by the first and last cages of the chain.
      In fact, you don't even need row 7. X=9 is ruled out by box 3 breaking the bank and then X=6 or 7 are both ruled out by the small cage in box 1 needing to be less than X.

      Even more classic Simon move: blue has to add up to X, X has to be 6, 7, or 8. Can two blue digits up to 17?

    • @korenn9381
      @korenn9381 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He could have immediately applied it on realising the blue domino is a multiple of 5. Clearly it had to be smaller than the dot (because blue equals dot), so 5 was the only valid option. which immediately leads to the dot being 8.

  • @MarcusTheDorkus
    @MarcusTheDorkus 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I determined the dot by setting up an equation based on the first 3 boxes:
    x = difference between cages
    y = value of r3c1
    n = 45
    n + (n - x) + (n - 2x) + (n - 5x) = 3n - 2x - y
    4n - 8x = 3n -2x - y
    n = 6x - y
    n + y = 6x
    (n + y) / 6 = x
    The only way this works with sudoku digits and accounting for the maximum value of x indicated by the interaction of r7c8 and r7c9 is if y is 3 and x is 8.

      You can achieve something similar by enabling the killer calculator in Settings. Then if you select a cage without a total, it will list all possible totals and fills, and you can select the total you want over on the right side of the calculator. It will then remember the chosen total each time you select that particular cage.

    I finished in 49 minutes. I started at the bottom and noticed that box 9 had to show the single cage as being very low to keep the 5 cage in box 8 at minimum. This led me to 7 or 8 as my x. I played with that for a bit, then noticed the top as being much better to look. From there, box 2 row 1 showed me the entire line had to be 7 or 8, which lead to box 1 row 3 being the same. It went pretty straightforward from there. I really enjoyed this puzzle. It had some nice geometry and tested my mental math skills. Great Puzzle!

    Simon made a bit of a meal of the opening chain. The first cage is 45, the second 45-x, the third 45-2x, all forced. Then the 4th is either 45-x or 45-3x, and the 5th cage is either 45, 45-2x or 45-4x, but since x is from 678, the 5th cage has to be 45-4x. Then finally the domino has to be 45-5x...
    And then since 45-5x < x because of the roping, x > 7.5 so x has to be 8.

    The 1:1:5 cage size ratios aren't required to limit x to 678, infact i didn't look at this til much later. I started entirely on the roping; as soon as you realise the two uncaged cells in B3 sum to 2x, you know x is at most 8, while B2 says x is at least 6...

  • @Raven-Creations
    @Raven-Creations 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    @ 8:48 - "I suppose the maximum value of the dot is 24" - Have you looked at R7? The maximum difference between two single digits is 8. If you chase the sequence from the 45 to the 2-cell cage in box 1, the minimum value of the dot is 8 too.
    @ 18:35 - "So how do we do this then?" - It's simple: 45 - 5 = 5*X, so X=8.
    @23:42 - "9 is now in one of those two squares" - use your eyes - there's a 79 pair looking at one of them, and you know there's roping, so you could have pencil-marked 7s and 9s into yellows, and you could place them both in box 1.
    @ 34:58 - "I can knock 8 out of this" - You can do better. The 31 cage includes either 4 or 5, but not both. The other goes in R5C9, so it must be 5.
    @ 35:18 - "If there's no 7 here" - of course there's a 7 - by sudoku you could have pencil-marked 7 in there ages ago.
    I lost count of the sudoku fails in this. It's not outrageous that you're expected to do sudoku in a sudoku puzzle. What is outrageous is your insistence on not doing it unless forced.

    Since others have already pointed out the easy way of deriving the dot from 45 - (5*dot) = 5, I'll instead point out that once you know there cannot be a positive increase in one step along the five dot chain, then you also know there cannot be a positive increase *anywhere* along the five dot chain, since obviously 45-x-x+x-x-x is the same as 45-x-x-x+x-x, which is the same as 45-x-x-x-x+x

    Wow, you could find X as well by only looking at rows 7, 8 and 9 (or at least I did, not noticing anything from the first 3 rows). The sequence of cages 1:1:5 indicates that the minimum value of X is (of 5:1) 15-9=6 and the maximum (of 1:1) 9-1=8. Then the 1:4 sequence along with the 1:1:5 is actually max-pressed: It's hard for me to explain in the short time I have, but you can tell how in the solved grid: r7c3+r7c8 is max and box8 -(r9c4+r9c6) is minimum.

    I think Simon's assumption of adding to "5" was lucky. Yes 5 is forced, but he said it has to be a multiple of 5 and therefore the cage adds to 5 and he know it is 5. Not true yet. It is 5 steps down and a multiple of 5. That's all we know. So it could step down 5*6 = 30, and then the two cell cage is 15. It could step down 5*7=35, and the two cell cage is 10, and finally it could step down 5*8=40, and the two cell cage is 5. There are correct ways to get there. I don't think this was one of them.

    At the beginning, when Simon finally arrives at the 2-cell cage in Box1 being a 5, he should immediately know what the dot value is. To descend from 45 to 5 in five dots is (45-5)/5, which is 8. So if the green rope is 8, and 2 cells of that are 5, it must be a 3 followed by a 14 pair. Also, instantly upon deducing the dot as 8, the two 1-cell cages in Box9 are 9 and 1.

    19:06 for me. That was a lot of fun to solve!
    I think this video provided some insights into Simon's mind. He seems like a textbook big-picture thinker. His mind seems to have a strong urge to think in generalities, noticing some of the properties that all puzzles of this sort (or with this layout) must have. And that does lead to him finding and appreciating some very beautiful logic.
    But it also leads to some real head-slappers when he notices one pretty thing, then discards his work a bit too quickly.
    (cage) = 45 - 5*(dot)
    Ah, that means (cage) must be a multiple of 5... and therefore it can only be 5. Beautiful!
    But we still don't know what (dot) is... oh, we can figure it out if we look two cages up the chain!
    I had to pause the video and take a walk.

    The though process might have been clearer if Simon had referred to the difference across a white dot as, oh, how about "X" rather than "dot"? This way the algebra rolls off the tongue much easier (especially as "dot" is usually an operator in math, not a value).
    Reminds me of a recent puzzle where the rules required the player to "shade" some cells, which Simon did in green, then used gray to mark cells certain to be not green, and even referred to the latter as "shaded cells"!

    That was lovely! Really nice idea, and a very fun break-in involving the chain of 6 cages. I wonder whether the roping was intended for the break-in or not?

    • @MrGrog90
      @MrGrog90 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The way I see it the roping is necessary for uniqueness. The first three boxes only contain big cages and scojo needed to avoid horizontal pairs emerging because there is no way for digits in the bottom boxes to reach in and resolve them.

    Simon, the way you solve puzzles is very lovely, entertaining, and full of excellent explanations. I always see comments about things you missed, or did a more complicated way than the person writing the comment thought was necessary - but I never mind one bit how you go about this. Thanks so much for making such enjoyable and interesting videos. Even when I cannot watch them on the day they are posted, I always hope to return to see them later.

  • @ukdavepianoman

    Great puzzle. The 5 dot sequence is a clever break-in. Once Simon had 2 cell cage total as 5 it was painful to watch him struggle to realise the only sequence that works is 45 37 29 21 13 and 5 and so X = 8. The outrage at being made to do Sudoku in a Sudoku puzzle is getting very tiresome and cliched. It's like a pianist complaining about being made to play a scale in a work.

    most people would be advised to not try this puzzle without using paper notes, at least until the value of X has been determined.
    easiest way to establish that X must be from {6,7,8} is in row 7
    then work around the chain from box 2 to 3 to 6 to 5 to 4 to 1
    the rest is pretty much just basic sudoku

    • @RichSmith77
      @RichSmith77 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think you even need row 7, at the start. The three cells at the top of box 4 sum to X, so the lower limit is 6. The two uncaged cells in box 3 sum to 2X, so the upper limit is 8.

    • @victorfinberg8595
      @victorfinberg8595 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RichSmith77 that's true enough, as simon showed. however, i claim that the "easiest" way is to look in row 7. why? because you are comparing a 5-cell cage to a 1-cell cage, which is the "obvious" place to start

      Once he had determined that X, which is the total of each strip of blue cells, was equal to 8, and the two cell cage in r3 had a sum of 5, the left over cell became 3.

      @terrible_shout 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Scojo486 I got it, but why these two digits are not "2" and "3", which sum to "5". And the left digit can be "1". It's possible, taking into account Simon's notes before placing first numbers

    I don't know (Simon can ramble all he wants about those mystery mathematics @13:50 that I have no idea how I'm going to keep track of) but the "1" surely can't go in that "domino," if I had to make an educated guess.
    Surely there can't be a "1" in there (the most that dominos would be was a 1,9) when I think we're looking at 97 or a little bit lower.
    Surely, a "1" can't go in there, can it?!

    • @stevesebzda570
