I only discovered Lil Peeps music after his death. I don’t even listen to anything that is remotely rap or hip hop. I came across a song by Juice Wrld, all girls are the same, which I thought was really cool. Great lyrics. I listened to Juice Wrld’s other stuff and thought it was just the usual boring rap/crap, nothing special. I was really shocked to hear about Juice Wrld’s death and Lil Peeps name came up many times when referring to young artist’s dying so young. Out of just general curiosity I decided to check Lil Peep out. The photos of Peep with the face tattoos and permanent joint in his hand seemed to confirm just another boring rapper. First songs I heard was of his early stuff and seemed to confirm my impressions and then I came across ‘Problems’. Now this was something COMPLETELY different and unexpected. Other songs like Brightside, cry alone, falling for me had me seriously hooked and pretty blown away. I loved the echoing voice and mix of genres. Here is a kid, 21, and coming out with some of the freshest, almost new type of music, amazing!! 16 lines is hauntingly beautiful and backstreat is the most underrated song ever!!
I am 52 years old and was really bummed to discover Peep so late but his early stuff was shit in any case. I started listening to Led Zeppelin, Black Sabath, went through the entire punk generation, new wave, alternative, hard metal/thrash, grunge, new metal, electronic age. I basically listen to anything just as long as it’s original, not commercial junk and sounds good to me. In general, I heard it all and can say I know my music shit.
You cannot put Peep in a musical pigeonhole. He sings, he doesn’t rap, his music is mixed with different genres, there is no other way to describe his music as simply Peeps sound. I don’t think he even could have cared less how people describe his music, it was his own unique sound. During the gothboiclique period he was looking and slowly finding his sound. Talent wise he left those guys behind in no time. In less than 2 years he had made a huge mark, sold out concerts in Europe with almost no advertising or air play. He had found his sound and was moving on. So sad he died so early, he was just getting started!! Imagine what he could have done if he had lived longer. Fuck, that is such a pity and such a shame!!! Such a talent gone far too early.
Punk was the biggest influence of music ever!!! It was not about the sound, most of the bands were seriously fucking useless. It was about the attitude and that a group of guys can get together, make a noise, hopefully find an audience and someone to back them. Before punk, record labels and radio determined and decided what music can be heard or aired. With punk, the people decided what they wanted to hear and flocked to see punk bands and not pop bands. When people with their own musical ideas saw punk growing they thought that if these idiots can do it, so can they. This started a musical revolution and thanks to punk other styles of music were created. Music like thrash/hard metal, new wave, reggae suddenly found an audience, alternative, gothic, ska, drum and bass, big beat, electronic….. and the list goes on. Peep is without a doubt punk and a major part of the second wave of punk. Platforms like soundcloud are allowing endless amounts of people to put their music and their ideas out there. A lot is junk and some are magic, like Peep.
It’s almost impossible to talk about Peep without talking about the drugs. The new generation of artist’s are all trying to make drugs look cool but a lot of them are dead now! In my time, grunge was the shit and grunge is now literally dead. Basically, every single grunge star is dead. There is nothing cool about drugs. Mixing uppers/downers/weed/opiates is just a recipe for an early grave. Valium isn’t even a recreational drug, it’s a medication that calms you down and will never give you any sort of a buzz. If you want to party then stick to a drug or drugs that are similar. Coke and booze or molly and coke. Not an upper and a downer like coke and valium. What’s the point of mixing drugs with opposite affects in any case? Opiates are just for people that want to have a slow death. Show me anyone that regularly used opiates and has anything positive to say about the drug.
Peep obviously had serious issues and serious issues with drugs. Everyone knows that when you up you going to come down and I think a lot of his issues were more drug related than personal. If you as high as a kite for days on end your brain needs time to create serotonin/dopamine etc. While your brain is doing this you are going to crash and it’s not ‘depression’. It won’t solve your problems either but make them worse. Have a good party, bite the blues that comes with it and get back on your feet. More drugs won’t get you back on your feet. Party smart and if you really feel you have to consume then use the drugs to help you enjoy what you want to get out of them. If you need a joint to relax and calm you, cool. If you going to a big party then decide on the best combo and stick to it. Mixing and taking whatever comes your way is like playing Russian roulette. Keith Richards is still alive after partying as hard as Peep for 50 years because he partys smartly.
In Europe you can go to big partys and they actually have a lab which test’s what you taking. Everyone knows people are going to use, they cannot stop it so rather make sure the people are safe and having fun. They ask you what you think you bought, such as mdma, and they will test a tiny bit of your pill for mdma. If they struggle to find mdma they will suggest not to take the pill and nobody in their right mind will take that pill. People are buying all sort’s of shit they have no clue what they actually taking. If Peep had done this he would be alive today. They mixing everything with fentanyl and these days a simple party drug can easily kill you. Peep had issues and it was no real surprise when he overdosed. I am so convinced that had he used simple common sense he would be with us today. I am not sure how long he would have still been with us but I am positive he would still have made magic for us for many years. So exciting to think what direction he would have gone music wise, as I said, he was just getting started. What a talent!!!!!
I still don’t buy that Peep was depressed. From all the clips I have seen he never looked depressed, just very insecure and shy. He never took any medication for anti-depression. Valium calms you down but it is not really an anti-depressant. Think most of his depression came from taking large amounts of different drugs and when you see clips of him looking ‘sober’ he definitely had a happy glow about him. When he was in the UK he looked much healthier. He definitely was unhappy and he had some really hard years but just when things were really going well for him and all his hard work was paying off he does something really stupid and it kills him.
Please be safe out there, use your head, speak to people. You will be surprised how many people actually do care if you just reach out. Don’t find out too late. We all go through hard times, ups and downs and it’s not the end. Humans always hold onto hope, so have hope and grin and bear the hard times, it will get better!!!
