    He said "Monarch" and "Venture" so many times. I mean, how was that not intended to be a Venture Bros. reference? For those not in the know, the show The Venture Bros. has a character named The Monarch.

      well he is a learned man, a scientist, and an avid attendee to conferences about how to save earth, as he mentions here. So while his degree and field of study may not be about this, he can use his popularity and knowledge garnered from years of working with experts to share information with the masses.
      I do agree, however, that more spacecraft and airplane stuff would be awesome.

    I was so worried Nye might get off on some weird gmo tangent, but this is the first time Ive heard him talk about it in a manner that I personally agree with.
    But that's the issue with herbicides, where do we draw the line between what we call crops and weeds.

    If GMOs aren't harmful, can you answer these two questions? 1. So, the how do we know that the genetic modification of the plant doesn't produce something harmful to humans like the corn plant produces a substance that kills the corn borer? 2. Doesn't the plant that can resist dying from the herbicide that kills all the other plants in the field absorb the herbicide that we ingest when we eat the plant.

    • @TheRealSevYT
      @TheRealSevYT 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a little searching I found a bit of information that might help answer that. Obviously don't just take my word for it and do your own research. Just try to stay away from anything that spouts fear mongering frankenfood gibberish or overly accepting GMO-friendliness without stating sources or testing to back up their claims.
      1. Experimentation and study. From the Wikipedia article on Bacillus thuringiensis (the bacterium in question that "makes" BT corn) [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacillus_thuringiensis#Toxicology_studies]:
      "Animal models have been used to assess human health risk from consumption of products containing Cry proteins. The United States Environmental Protection Agency recognizes mouse acute oral feeding studies where doses as high as 5,000 mg/kg body weight resulted in no observed adverse effects. Research on other known toxic proteins suggests that toxicity occurs at much lower doses, further suggesting that Bt toxins are not toxic to mammals. The results of toxicology studies are further strengthened by the lack of observed toxicity from decades of use of B. thuringiensis and its crystalline proteins as an insecticidal spray."
      2. Yes and no. From an (supposedly) actual scientist at Monsanto [gmoanswers.com/ask/how-much-pesticide-and-or-weed-killer-gets-absorbed-freshly-planted-gm-seeds-residual-amounts]:
      "...Any glyphosate residues that remain in the plant decrease over time following application, and are less in grain compared to leaves. Processing of grain for use in food also reduces detectible residues. For example, there is no detectible glyphosate present in the oil fraction in soybean or corn oil. ..."
      Basically the grain absorbs much less than the stem/stalk/leaf, and processing and refining help to further reduce that amount.

  • @dertythegrower
    @dertythegrower 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bill Nye is wrong on this, yet again. Hybrid plants can happen without humans, its natural. GMO is made only in a lab! What a fool, there is no comparison and he keeps talking about this, trying to shill for Monsanto. You don't know jack about hybrids and GMOs quite clearly Bill, do some more research and try not to spend only 5 minutes per topic on your research! (edit: I also find it funny that the youtube ad is for bayer 'learn about bayers proposal to acquire monsanto' it says (the huge corporate company buying monsanto). Wow, just wow. This entire thing is a shill for corporations, lost all respect for Bill Nye, seriously, and I grew up watching his shows.
