You were not alone in your reaction to that assault scene with Daphne. I remember when season 1 came out, that scene was discussed a lot, and it seemed like to the majority it did not come off as this bad ass moment from Daphne, as the writers might have hoped for
How it happened in the book was worse and I think the writers thought the way they wrote it for the show was “better” but it wasn’t. And that scene of Daphane crying over not being pregnant, are we supposed to feel bad for her that she isn’t pregnant off of someone else’s assault? Like what was the thought process in that writers room
I think you’re seeing it from the wrong angle, Daphne knows NOTHING about how sex works and how one becomes pregnant, the maid explained it to her but she had to see it herself to believe it. Yes, it’s extremely wrong but when you have the context of the time period and how uneducated women were, it makes you understand it better. She was confused and probably didn’t want to believe Simon deliberately lied to her.
@@yelloowdae Daphne’s lack of education on the matter and how her naïveté was taken advantage of is not lost on us viewers, you can understand the motives and driving forces behind someone’s actions and still recognize it was wrong. The reality is, the scene failed in making it clear that her actions were wrong regardless of why she came to do them. They should’ve shown more consequences and if they wanted Daphne and Simon to reconcile, his SA should NOT have been brushed off the way it was.
queen, you are so right to be disgusted by daphne. can't believe some people try to justify what she did and consider them to be the best of the Bridgeton couples. anyway, season 2 is a MUST. queen charlotte is also femininominal
Quinn, Rhymes, and other second-wave feminists just don't see it as a big deal. They are the sort of people to claim that a woman can't rape a man. And you can bet that, in this magical fantasy world without racism, there won't be a hint of trans people.
I mean c'mon it wasn't SA or r*pe ...y'all are downplaying what those things really are Simon love to have sex with Daphne she only forced him to finish and nothing else it's like poking a hole in your husbands condom it's weird AF but not r*pe. I’m in almost every comment fighting for my life, Daphane assaulted Simon and she admits that she’s taken advantage of Simon, I don’t know how people can defend her behaviour. And the fact that she didn’t receive any consequences is crazy
While bridgerton isn't a mysterious, hard to decipher brain teaser, I don't think we need to mention the shipping names to someone who hasnt seen the relating season
What Daphne does to Simon made her irredeemable in my eyes and why there is nothing redeemable about their relationship. Yes Simon should have been more straight with her about the children thing. I don’t care. The price for him being dishonest should not be sexual assault and traumatizing him to the point where his speech impediment comes back.
Daphne literally didn’t even have any idea of how babies were actually made and you expect her to understand the importance of continued consent? Consent was not discussed back then. All of us in the modern age understand that if someone says to stop in the middle of sex that we are supposed to stop. This was not talked about at all back then and you expect Daphne to just know it intuitively. I get why it rubs people the wrong way, or even disturbs them, I think it is a good thing to point out that it is not ever OK to continue sex if someone says no or to stop, but I would like to see people using a little bit more critical thinking when it comes to how they judge Daphne for what she did.
@@AnxietyRat she punched him because he grabbed her by the arms, that doesn't mean she understood the important of continued consent. she obviously didn't understand that was she was doing was abusive, simons lies are what made her feel powerless, and the entire show points out that women go to drastic measures to maintain security and dignity and personhood, in the very least, in a world where they are completely disempowered. he treated her like a child and lied to her, thinking her innocence on what sperm does would be enough to continue to dupe her. what she did was the only way to see if he was lying. continued consent was NOT a topic back then.
@@melsglued I mean the show is a fantasy, we have diversity in 19th century England and no horrible racism we see in other realistic shows. It seems tone deaf for the show incorporate those but then neglect consent and show it off as normal.
@bigbird Exactly the writers could have had them address the issue, or better yet not had that happen at all, if Simon finds out that the pull out method isn’t exactly 100% effective and panics over it, have Daphne be a bit late for her period he freaks out and she wonders why or thinks it’s a miracle, or just had him not pull out once.
Yooo, one of my favorite editors atm Yeah, I totally agree. I hate the way people brush it off like nothing ever happened. If the genders were reversed everyone would be bashing Simon I bet
These are things modern people understand because there has been discussion about it. Daphne literally didn’t even have any idea of how babies were actually made and you expect her to understand the importance of continued consent? I think Daphne did what she had to do to prove to herself that Simon was lying to her. I don’t think it is the same as a modern day woman forcing a man to finish inside of her because she would full well know what she’s doing. Daphne did not. And it also is not like Simon ever had a conversation with her saying explicitly that he would refuse to finish sex without withdrawal because that was his boundary, he would just withdraw from sex before he finished each time without even explaining to her why. That is because he was taking advantage of her innocence on the subject. What Daphne did was her only way of proving to herself that Simon had only been lying to her this entire time and he was in fact capable of having children.

“Aww cuz it’s like starting over with the bloodline!” It’s actually just tradition in the Bridgerton household that all the kids are named alphabetically from oldest to youngest lol
I've watched a few Americans react to Bridgerton and there tends to be a lot of confusion about the King. So, basically the King is George III (the one thats in Hamilton if that helps). He was King for 60 years, the 3rd longest reigning monarch after Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria. Many notable things happened during his reign but the important bits for Bridgerton are that he lost the American colonies and was the Mad King of England. The generally accepted diagnosis today is that George III had porphyria, one of the symptoms being mental confusion, increased anxiety and hallucinations. Over the course of his life, George III had intermittent periods of mental confusion that was dubbed "insanity" with lucidity throughout. In 1811, Parliament passed the Regency Act as George III was no longer able to rule due to his lack of lucidity leaving his eldest son, Prince George, to rule in his stead, hence the era being called the Regency Period. George III died in 1820 and his son took over as King George IV. There is so much I'm missing out in this so please go and do your own research if interested. I highly recommend anything from Horrible Histories in regards to the Georges though. Its fun and also very accessible due to being made for children. :))
I already love the title, I knew you would bring awareness to this topic. Sick people in the fandom love to deny there was any kind of abuse even when there's a literally trigger warning on the show bc of that scene, and some others are even worse by even trying to justify her, it's wild.
I LOVE Queen Charlotte, it’s my absolute favorite from the Bridgerton universe, the sub plots are SO interesting and the romance is so good! I would recommend watching it after season 2 and before season 3 :)
Actually, Simon says that the name of their kid should with an A bc the Bridgerton kids are named in that order, idk if you noticed. It's Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth. So they would follow that tradition, her family's tradition.

@@melsglued Girl, it's not about critical thinking. In a show that uses contemporary pop music and erases the era's racism, you can't pull the "back then vs now" card. The scene with Daphne actually started up a lot of social commentary about men's rights in intimate relationships. No one was on her side, really, and there were tons of articles about it all over the place, bringing up topics about trapping men with children that don't get nearly enough attention. I might not like the bridgerton show much, but when a piece of media goes from being just entertainment to being a useful focal point of social commentary... well, that's when it's worth it in my eyes.
Seriously, I really think the only reason the show got away with Daphne doing what she did is that the book version was so much worse. Doesn't make this version ok, at all, though. I think they could have made the whole thing so much less villainous if her conversation with her maid explaining how babies are made didn't happen until after the incident - if she didn't plan to do it on purpose, it just happened, and he panicked afterward or was angry believing she had done it on purpose, leading her to question why he would get so upset, and the truth would have come out then. Then it would have been a case of they were poor at communicating with each other, but nobody was really a bad guy.
Now I want your version to be true 😅. Or have it cannon but at least writters or people involved condemned it, we don't need perfect characters if we know what they did wrong
When I explained to my sister that she SA'ed him, she was like what no she didn't, and I said "please change the genders and see how you feel" and she admitted it would be different. But it's not. It's SA no matter what gender it's happening to! And yeah, it wasn't awesome how he lied to her, but that doesn't justify it. In the book it is even worse because he's drunk and asleep when she starts it and he starts stuttering so hard he panics and runs because of what she did. She also gets off the hook pretty quickly there.
you’re so real lol season one is my least favorite honestly but people on tiktok keep saying it’s the best and they wish it could go back to this 😭 like huh? back to the SA?? everyone brushes it off

I think we all collectively agree, that what Daphne did was wrong, were not supporting rape or any type of assault in this household. My concern is for those that it could have harmed knowingly or not. Anyhoooooo.... I would love if you continued with this series, even if you need to space it out. He set his boundaries right and it s not his fault that she doesn’t know how babies are made and when someone says i CAN’T it s more powerful than i won’t, i really was hoping he ll keep his promise or AT LEAST having only girls and being content with them , she used all his weaknesses against him ! Reading his letters , SAing him , tricking him to marry her … i hated the couple honestly they could ve done so much better
Thats ridiculous. He was not upfront with his intentions because he literally chased her down kissed her and groped her body immidiately during her first ever kiss with anyone. Then he declared he would not marry her and her brother had to duel him. İn that times standarts, he literally ruined her so nobody else would marry her but he also said he wouldn't. He was terrible. After marriage of course he SHOULD HAVE explained to her what sex is and how children are made seeing as his WİFE doesn't know. He kept her in the dark on purpose so he could use her for sex whenever he wanted while she was sad about a medical issue of his. Because saying i cant have kids makes it sound like a medical issue rather than the FACT that was he didn't want to have a child in spite of his father. Simple as that. She was lied to and fooled and kept on edge the whole time. Everyone is so harsh on her. Girl doesnt know consent and people are acting like she forcefully had him. He was a willing participant in the sex until the last two seconds. They should have adressed it better but they didn't.
23:26 just adding that he mentioned it should start with an A because Daphne's siblings are all named in alphabetical order (Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne and so forth) and that implies that he wants to have more kids with her too! So cute!
23:26 the baby's name starts with the letter A because the bridgerton names are in the alphabetical order, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphine... that's something that i only notice when he said that line

@@ambershobaEXACTLYY it was so frustrating to see everyone feel bad for her but not acknowledge what she did 😭
I think you’re seeing it from the wrong angle, Daphne knows NOTHING about how sex works and how one becomes pregnant, the maid explained it to her but she had to see it herself to believe it.
They should’ve shown more consequences and if they wanted Daphne and Simon to reconcile, his SA should NOT have been brushed off the way it was.
i don’t think the writers ever intended that to be the takeaway
Girl thats a big fat YES on continuing the Bridgerton experience. From here it only gets better! Season 2 and Queen Charlotte, and Season 3! 😌😁
Legit spat out my tea at "THAT pringle can is going in this pinhole??"😂
queen, you are so right to be disgusted by daphne. can't believe some people try to justify what she did and consider them to be the best of the Bridgeton couples. anyway, season 2 is a MUST. queen charlotte is also femininominal
Maybe I'm watching it through the lens of a straight guy which is why I get why Simon brushed it off.
I’m in almost every comment fighting for my life, Daphane assaulted Simon and she admits that she’s taken advantage of Simon, I don’t know how people can defend her behaviour. And the fact that she didn’t receive any consequences is crazy

I’M GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT DAPHNE WAS LET OFF TOO EASILY
@@melsglued... I mean she understood enough about consent to punch Burbrook in the first episode... So she does have a vague understanding of it 🤷♀️
@@AnxietyRat she punched him because he grabbed her by the arms, that doesn't mean she understood the important of continued consent. she obviously didn't understand that was she was doing was abusive, simons lies are what made her feel powerless, and the entire show points out that women go to drastic measures to maintain security and dignity and personhood, in the very least, in a world where they are completely disempowered. he treated her like a child and lied to her, thinking her innocence on what sperm does would be enough to continue to dupe her. what she did was the only way to see if he was lying.
continued consent was NOT a topic back then.
Daphne SA Simon will never sit right with me even if it wasn't very common back then
Yooo, one of my favorite editors atm
Yeah, I totally agree. I hate the way people brush it off like nothing ever happened. If the genders were reversed everyone would be bashing Simon I bet
Haha, I'm rarely ever a top comment and ty but Aedevii and AUSTULIP always 🔛🔝
her SAing Simon and people defending it is exactly why i refuse to ever watch this series
Agreed it is possibly the darkest moment in the whole show and they just gloss over it.
Ashley correctly guessing Pen as Lady Whistledown is so iconic
19:29 I love this "they're both gay!" There's no spoilers to give because there's nothing that could definitely be said about either of them! 😂😂 But it's funny the way you fall into the same fanfic ideas as everyone else.

I hate how Daphne r*ping Simon was, quite frankly, brushed off by the general audience. This type of behaviour shouldn’t be tolerated EVER.
@emmett5846 I hated that and I hate Daphne so much!! If Daphne had been a man, people would've crucified her!! 🙄
I’ve seen people try to reframe it by saying that technically it’s Simon’s fault for manipulating her based on her naïveté about sex and how it works and I was just in shock of how evil some people can be.
This is why I feel icky when people say they hate s2 but LOVE s1. Well, i cannot love manipulation and r*pe... 😭😭
It literally made me wanna drop the show until season 2 came out 😭😭😭
honestly i don’t even blame daphne. i think julia quinn is really the weirdo. the amount of shit she put in the books was so odd. i don’t understand making characters were supposed be rooting for do heinous things just to brush it off as though it’s normal. like making all the girls in the books be so unaware about sex and all the guys having like 100+ body count (exaggeration but u get it)??? it just makes it feel like it’s a child
when i saw “daphne go to jail” i immediately clicked bcus i forgot what the hell she done😭😭
That's how little the show cared on treating this topic properly
@ville__ literally what was the reason for that u dumbfuck
@@jrlombardi5251 true, but i also forgot what even happened throughout season 1💀
“Aww cuz it’s like starting over with the bloodline!” It’s actually just tradition in the Bridgerton household that all the kids are named alphabetically from oldest to youngest lol
I forgot how dramatic season 1 was. I've rewatched season 2 too many times

Girl you got me into watching this show and im addicted and have already watched every season 😭
“Are we supposed to be on her side, bc I’m NOT”
Same. Same. ⛓️💥
Oh, definitely continue to watch, season 2 is soo unhinged 😂 you'll love it❤ and season 3 is so good too, pen and Colin and so soft together 😊

Well he wasn’t honest about why he didn’t want kids. That’s the only thing he lied about. He said that he couldn’t when he actually wouldn’t.
