I HAD NEVER HEARD OF AHMAD JAMAL, BUT ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO, I WALKED INTO A STORE THAT WAS PLAYING HIS MUSIC AND I STARTED DANCING RIGHT ON THE SPOT WHERE I WAS STANDING. IT WAS THIS VERY SONG THAT WAS PLAYING. I IMMEDIATELY BOUGHT THE ALBUM AND HAVE BEEN GROVIN' EVER SINCE. HIS MUSIC IS SO WELL KNOWN AND SO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER PIANO PLAYER. ALL OF HIS GROUP ARE SUPERB MUSCIANS. THANK YOU FOR HAVING THIS ON TH-cam! MAY AHMAD HAVE MANY MORE BIRTHDAYS SO HE CAN PLAY MORE MUSIC. I listen to this evocative piece of jazz perfection almost every day, but today it seems even more poignant than ever. I just learned of the passing of this jazz master, who I had the privilege of seeing perform live at City Hall during the Toronto Jazz Festival of 2007. Rest in peace and power, Mr. Ahmad Jamal.

Sixty years ago I heard Poinciana at a local Chicago station. Ahmed Jamal played at the Pershing Hotel at 39th and Federal, not far from the high school I attended. I was mesmerized by this song, and have heard it 10,000 times. Notice the interaction of the musicians. This is harmony.
Correction: The Pershing Hotel was on Cottage Grove, not Federal.

I was born 4 decades after this man and just recently discovered his extraordinary music. I'm mesmerized beyond measure. The best jazz arrangements I've ever heard! Where have I been??!!

Judy here, have listened to jazz, classical, r&b, etc. Since I was twelve listening to my brothers dizzy Gillespie, Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Johnny Hartmann, so, so many concerts. When l was about 22 I met Billy eckstein at a small venue. Beautiful grey eyes. I regress. I'm 71 and still groovin. So glad im still loving it all. Thank u for making sure classics are readily available for all. Pass your love of music on....

No matter how many times Jamal plays this signature tune, there is always something fresh and different. Badrena's percussion certainly adds another wonderful layer of sound and texture to this particular performance.

My favorite jazz pianist of all times and the rhythm section is so badass!! Bass player is killing it but drummer and percussionist are too. They are so happy! This is just pure joy!

I've been playing music for 53 of my 57 years. Ask a musician to pick a "favorite song." You may get a list a mile long. This piece is on my top 3. It moves me from one space, through many spaces and into another space, better than the first. Transcendent! Sublime!

Ed, I'm 84 and lots of physical things wrong. But, I have LOTS of wonderful memories and also--I have YOU TUBE. This grants me loads and loads of musical wonders, like this one. Lots of them help restore those precious memories for me. Think of the GOOD THINGS in your life and actively throw away the negative ones. Be happy with what you have and don't continue pondering the things you don't have. God made a great place for us to enjoy. Go and enjoy !!
Me too. At 71 now, I clearly remember my very first sound of a music with that piano, hard and good percussion, that tempo that drove me crazy, those pauses throughout, etc.,.etc.
Get yourself a piano, a teacher, some coffee- spend some hours doing it. You'll be a different person. Depression will be in the rear view mirror-

Like I said before, Ahmad Jamal with this tune turned my life around at my age of 12 years old in 1961. From our deaf parents who never knew music, my older sister bought the Ahmad Jamal Live Album at the Pershing Hotel in NY 1959 album with the iconic Poinciana tune. We played it on the old record player. I was instantly hooked on this sound. This new music to me of which I had never known so I was instantly hooked with a 12 year old hypnotic self-induced addiction to something new after Grandma told me to walk down the street to take the Saturday morning piano lessons from the lady. Yes, I'm playing piano again with all the sexy arpeggios. Not bad but others say I should put a vase on the local public piano's they have everywhere here, haha.
I was able to see Ahmad Jamal a number of times not too many years ago at Jazz Alley in Seattle.

I didn't know he passed. My husband bought my first vinyl albums with an elegant hard cover in the 1950's, he was one of a kind. I love jazz musicians all my life.

Paul Gibby, right! Seeing Jamal and Company's apparent enjoyment makes it all the more fun. Bass player is phenomenal, as are both percussionists! I keep wondering if I would enjoy this as much if they were all looking grumpy. I don't think so. Happiness can be contagious.

I first heard this song when I was about 12 yrs old & fell madly in love w/jazz & that moment. Some 62 yrs later & it still sounds good!
I 1st heard the album when I was 10yrs. old in the late 50's, played by my oldest brother Morris Sanders. He's not with us, but I still love the artist and the great music. Thurmond Michael Sanders

I first heard Ahmad decades ago play this beautiful song when he was probably about 30. At nearly 90 he still plays it so amazingly well.
I was 18 in 1960. Had own apt in Basement of motel. In college. Bought album with this tune. Never forget it. Thanks so much

I used to play this piece almost daily, holding my Maltese in my arms and dancing around my apartment. My Maltese loved it and so did I. Now my little one is gone, and I’m too old and unsteady to dance, but I still listen to this and love it.

Dynamic Player! When my daughter, Ali, was 8 years old, I was working in NYC and I took her with me to the jazz supper club to listen to him and band. They seated us up front and the drummer asked a couple of times..."is this music too loud for her"...so sweet of him. People afterwards came up to me and said "what a great ideal to introduce your child to music this way.

I first heard Ahmad play this in 58. It was on an Argo LP and played by Sid McCoy on WCFL radio. Sid had a jazz show from 11 to 2am daily. I lived in Chicago and listened every night. This tune and rendition immediately struck lightening.
"This is your boy Sid McCoy." I was 19 years old in 1959 and in the Air Force at Westover AFB in Massachusetts. In the wee hours of the morning we could pick up Sid McCoy's show all the way up there. Your comments brought back a flood of memories.
@@millardallgood6418 I faithfully listened to Sid from 56 to 62. Was introduced to so many jazz greats. Loved the background music of Stan Getz and Johnny Smith playing “Moonlight in Vermont.” WCFL 1000 on the AM dial, Chicago.
RIP, Mr. Jamal, you were an early part of my introduction to acoustic jazz, remember seeing him at Blues Alley in the Mid to late 80s. Tried again to see him at Arlington VAs Rosslyn jazz fest in the early 2000s, and dragged my wife and then young children to Rosslyn on a beautiful September day, they tolerated it the best they could!
This must be the happiest moment of all the happy moments there are! A smiling Ahmad makes me smile, and the band smiles too. Is he 88 years, in this 2019, and is he still alive? Anybody?

I have listened to many recordings of Poinciana by Ahmad Jamal, but this one is my absolute favorite. There is not a day that goes by without me listening to it. At work, my feet are pumping under my desk and the melody is in my head most of the time.

That was a great time to be a live in the city. Five Spot, Vanguard, The Gate. Miles, Monk, Mingus, Dizzy. All magical, great audiences and every tune a trip. I love TH-cam! haha

I saw Ahmad Jamal probably 30 or 40 years ago in a club in the village in New York City! Me and My gal ordered a bottle of blue nun, only because you had to buy something, LOL, but the music was simply mesmerizing, I went on in my later life to become a keyboard player from his inspiration! So thank you my brother thank you 😊

I am 84 and am in radio broadcasting and thinking of giving it all up.....until i hear this....Ahmad and i played at Birdland on “open Mic” sessions way back in the 50s.Miles always said he was influenced by Ahmad’s approach to music...also Keith Jarrett was influence!!! God how time flies!!!...I still remember some of those halcyon days!!!

I have the original LP with this track which I listened to in a site hut back in 1964. I still love listening to it as well as the versions on TH-cam.
Ahmad Jamal managed to extract the piano's true percussive qualities and sublime melodies in equal measure, a truly unique talent, gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace
