1977 BMW R100RS Painting Pinstripes

- When I had the bike repainted, it ended up with gloss clear coat due my failure to communicate clearly with my painter. The 1977 bikes had a matte clear coat. I finally got around to having it re-cleared with matte clear coat. I had to have the pinstripes painted again. I show what I did before the painter arrived and show how he applied the pinstripes.

My hands hurt just watching this. Amazing work, slow, patient, perfection. Great job.

@@BrooksAirheadGarage I have had this 83 r100 that was transplanted in a ural for years.
I picked up good frame and most of the fairing parts. I just retired so I will finally have time to start tearing it down. I cant wait.

Great videos . I also have 1977 R100Rs CFO-spoke wheels- that was painted with gloss clear coat by mistake. I can't complain as the painter we used at the last BMW dealership I worked at did the job at no cost to me as I was retiring after working there for many years. The pin stipes were done nicely but the clear coat just wasn't what I need. Any suggestions to painters? I was in Texas but now live in Ohio. Regards.

Beautiful and these videos have become the standard, almost cultish. I am restoring #6180240 (big exhaust model) that was re-painted in motosport colors. I'm putting it back as it should be, but looking for a painter. Any suggestions?
Hi T B, Thank you for the kind words. And, it's great to hear about your work on putting another 1st year RS back in stock condition. The person who did this paint work is out of business-a victim of the COVID situation. Depending on where you live, you may find some custom bike builders and they can put you in touch with painters who like to work on motorcycles. Another avenue is local bike dealers and local body shops. In the past, those businesses have given me good leads on motorcycle painters.

Mario, they are painted over the clear. I like them that way. No additional clear coat was applied over the stripes.
Hi, very nice job. I painted my friends 1976 model but used gloss as i did not know any different. Should your machine have spoked wheels?.
Hi Majorscope, Yes the 1977 RS had spoke wheels with blue pinstripes. It came this way when I bought it.
@@BrooksAirheadGarage Hi, Thanks for the reply. I found my friends machine on ebay. The owner was going to dismantle it and sell the bits. It was smoke red. Research showed it was the 1976 demonstrator supplied to BMW Park Lane in London. Very interesting.
i tried that a while ago, got me the right equipment but...it is really HARD.... finally gave up.

D.A., A friend who restores bikes told me about the best striper he knew when he was younger. The gent was an alcoholic with the shakes. But, when he got the brush in his hand, he became "steady eddy". So yes, maybe a drink will help. :-)
