    "Remo Drive are either extremely self aware, or their attempts at irony have backfired on them as their album titles function as self-fulfilling prophecies."
    -Jesper L. (Sputnik Music)
    Now consisting of just Erik Paulson and Stephen Paulson, Remo Drive are an extremely interesting band. Because they seemingly came out of nowhere with their emo masterpiece, Greatest Hits. But what makes things extra-interesting, is that their two following LPs, Natural Everyday Degradation and A Portrait of an Ugly Man couldn't be further from a masterpiece.... That's not to be mean or rude, it's just my opinion.
    The music from their past two LPs has been off-putting enough by itself, but combined with some of their antics online and general attitude, makes it very hard to stay interested. I say that as a huge fan of the band's work. Greatest Hits will forever be in my rotation, and I'll always be thankful toward them for creating. But I'm just overall disappointed.
    But that's not to say I hold any disdain toward any member of Remo Drive or the band itself. These are just small criticisms that I hope they receive well and maybe listen to. This is by no means a negative video.
    Hope you mates have a great rest of your week. I appreciate you watching.
    -Nate

      Sam is more or less the reason I started listening to the band. I had only heard I'm My Own Doctor once or twice but they were playing on a bill with another band I liked so I watched their set. At some point Erik's guitar dropped out or something and instead of 3-5 minutes of awkwardly and silently trying to solve their problem, Sam just ripped into a drum solo that was hella entertaining and gave them the time to get their shit back together and go into the next song. Greatest Hits slaps because Sam is a super unique drummer

    The fact that they took off all their old songs from Spotify shows how much they hate their roots/ old fans. I feel like they would take Greatest Hits off of it if they would. For as much as they’ve “grown” it seems like they barely have any roots left; meaning most fans are moving on/ criticizing their new direction.

    if anyone wasnt aware, Remo recently was under fire, dare i say ‘cancelled’ because Stephen left his significan other and broke up with her as soon as she was pregnant with his kid. also, their last tour guitarist came out and said that Erik had treated them like complete shit while on the tour. every night after their set, Erik would say things like “i don’t know how we’re supposed to sound good when you are the worst guitar player i’ve ever seen” and “our fans think we suck because of you”. take what you will with that and decide whether you want to keep supporting them i guess.

    Greatest Hits was the album that got me into midwest emo and eventually math rock. As a kid growing up in St. Paul Minnesota, I was under the impression that everything good in music was happening elsewhere. This album changed that for me. I got to see them live in late 2017 where Beach Bunny was actually opening for them. It was the first general admission concert I ever went to and I absolutely loved it. It was really cool knowing that such great music was coming from people that lived less than 15 miles from me, and it inspired me to start making music myself.
    Seeing those tweets for the first time in this video makes me a bit sad. I understand that they want to make more mature sounding music instead of Greatest Hits pt.2, but alienating their fans is not the right way to go. I'd think they'd be more understanding of this due to the fact that Eric is a huge fan of Weezer's Pinkerton. I really hope that they find success making the music they truly want to make, while being a bit more understanding of GH fanboys.

    they've also changed immensely as actual people.....not really too respectful anymore tbh. which sucks bc they used to be my favorite band - and i had photographed them a few times. its quite sad bc you can tell that the passion really isn't there and they had worked so well as a trio together. everything went super downhill after sam left. a few of my friends were touring band members too and they aren't associated w the band anymore whatsoever - which is *very* telling if you catch my drift. they got me through art school among other things and their 'downfall' is just sad. ofc bands change their sound w the times, but its just so disappointing to see their new work - bc it could be sooo much better.

The riff is just beautifully eerie and and there’s a kind of dark energy around it. I didn’t know about the twitter stuff though. That’s really off putting. If you can’t accept the fact that as a creator you will create things that do not go over well with an audience, and that that audience may express their opinions in various ways both abrasive and kind, you may not need to be a creator. Great vid as always, Nate!

    I only got into them this year. Greatest Hits is such an isanely solid album. Their second one was super weak. Their third album i don't mind but it's not them at all. I came bsck and actually liked a few songs but on a third listen it all blurs into indistinguishable 60's rock worship

    It took longer for me to get into Natural, Everyday Degradation but it definitely grew on me. I just had to come to terms with the fact the sound was going in a much different direction, but once I did I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some good hooks on there, like the end of The Devil and Halos. Good lyricism too imo. Portrait of an Ugly Man on the other hand, idk I'm having a hard time seeing that one ever grow on me. From my experience they're cool dudes in person though, even if those tweets might suggest otherwise, and I wish them the best for their future endeavors. This was one of my all time favorite bands, I remember watching their music videos and saying yes! That summer 2018 I was hyped I was going to see them live, then it was shot out of the dark they played new songs off the new album that wasn't even out yet they ended the night with "eat shit" everyone was excited and hyped moshing and jumping but that was it. Hopefully they go back to "greatest hits" the raw sound of guitar and drums and bass was the key

  • @montgomeryband
    @montgomeryband 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You roasted them pretty hard here but I agree with everything you said. Also, to add to the rumours I heard one reason they parted ways with Sam was that he was kind of a diva on tour, always calling shotgun on the bed in motels and stuff etc. Which I can understand why you wouldn't want to tour with someone like that. But they suggest in their Audiotree session that he also played a big role in songwriting and arranging which is why the music changed so much when he left as well. But all that aside, hot damn, he's a good drummer.

    I personally love their newer pursuits (maybe not as much as GH but I still love it). The whole twitter thing was immature but every time I've met the guys they've been unbelievably kind and somewhat awkward. They are growing as a band and it's understandable for people to drop off when that happens but as a person with a wider musical range than just emo, the two newest albums and the one EP are great in their own rights.

    Remo sounds like they’ve been shot with a tranquilizer dart. NED was a hot miss and Ugly Man is very sleepy, generic singer-songwriter. Even Erik’s vocals sound tired and bored. He’s yelling his soul out on GH and on Ugly Man he’s just meandering through the songs. As Nate said, Pop Music had me pretty interested in their Epitaph debut but we got NED.
    GH sounds just as good now as the day it released. It is an amazing album and it’s insane how they shot themselves in the feet so quickly.

    I first listened to greatest hits, but my love for them was solidified with the 2014 demos. I loved the raw emotion and how it was unapologetically them, no matter how harsh or unpolished the sound was, it was about staying true to what they (mainly Erik, i assume) were feeling.
    now, im sure thats still the case, but it is so much more refined and almost formulaic. its hard to find that same emotion and drive. maybe they are still being true to themselves, i can't know as someone on the outside, but it just isn't why I became a fan in the first place. I cant be mad at them for wanting to move on and make their sound into what they want

    I still love the pure pubescent energy on Greatest Hits to this day. I thought Pop Music was alright but I hoped that their next full length project would bring back that energy. I can see the progression of their music. It makes sense. It is the logical (albeit soulless) maturation of their sound. The production of the second album is far better. It’s cleaner. It’s pristine. It comes through well mixed and flows like melted butter.
    ...but melted better is NOT what I want from Remo.
    Remo in my head is a collection of people essentially ranting their frustrations out in a public forum to create a tuning fork note for people to resonate with. That’s the appeal of Greatest Hits summed up. NED and Portrait do not have that quality or brutal honesty.
    They are better albums musically. They are technically better produced and they are of a higher caliber especially vocally considering Eric’s range.
    But what the hell is the point of taking the edge off of sword?

    • @brandonphipps5363
      @brandonphipps5363 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fully disagree that their new albums are "better" musically. The production is cleaner but the instrumentation lacks the character GH had.

  • @flick4069
    @flick4069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oh. I really liked all their albums, all the music has very nice lyrics, I like the variety between albums, and, as someone with synesthesia, all of their music makes such beautiful and unique colors.
    I do think they could take criticism better, and they can definitely grow as people, we all can, but they’re artists. Artists don’t make art for the viewer, they make it to express themselves. In fact, their song on their newest album, “I Kidnapped Remo Drive” is all about how Erik feels about fans demanding him to make things he doesn’t want to make, and how, in his head, the fans sound. Lyrics like, “Just relax, ‘cause struggling will only give you ropeburn,” and even a line from the antagonist in Silence of the Lambs, Buffalo Bill, is referenced, “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.” And my favorite, “I’d hate to see you hurt but how else will I ever get through to you?” All of those lines are being said “by a fan” and are all rather manipulative and abusive. If you force artists to make things they don’t want to, or don’t like, then there will be no heart and soul behind it.

  • @marioleal101
    @marioleal101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is too true :(
    I was in one of their livestreams in the past months and I was asking gear questions. They were asking for questions and weren't receiving many but they (Erik) ignored it the first time. After a small set they asked for questions again and I reworded my question to sound more intriguing and basically... Erik was like hey Stephen get a load of this guy..
    Pretty much a bummer bc I was a huge fan of greatest hits and everything precursor to that but after that confrontation I got a sense that they don't seem to care about their listeners all that much. Sucks it has to be that way because there's definitely talent between the brothers and any solid drummer

Im not trying to sound bitter when I say this but the biggest comparable band is Mom Jean. I remember nothing was this hyped as a band since JANK. Best Buds was such an iconic album, and the diy community LOVED their personalities. Ive always thought they were cool people as I saw them a few times at house shows so I agree whole heartedly. Funny enough when they came out with Puppy Love they had almost identical behavior as Remo Drive. I myself agree it didnt meet standards and alot of other Mom Jeans fans didn't like it. Making Greatest Hits 2 can be as deep as you they want it to be. There’s nothing stopping the greatest hits “sound” from being deep. All we want is greatest hits with better production, even better songwriting (which includes more depth), and maybe a more cohesive and grounded theme.

  • @andrewreed4924

    People stopped listening because their new music has no personality. Simple as that. They just made it worse by being dicks about it.
