- The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday issued new provisional measures that order Israel to immediately end military operations in Rafah in southern Gaza and to open the governate’s border crossing for urgent aid deliveries.
This follows a request from South Africa in a pending case accusing Israel of violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention.
Reading the new provisional measures in an open session at the court in The Hague, ICJ Justice Nawaf Salam announced that Israel must abide by its obligations under the Genocide Convention to “immediately halt its military offensive and any other action in the Rafah governate which may inflict upon the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that would bring about its physical destruction in whole and in part”.
The court issued that decision by 13 votes in favour to two against.
The new provisional measures came in response to South Africa’s request made on 10 May related to its initial accusations in December that Israel is violating its obligations under the Genocide Convention during the war in Gaza, which broke out after Hamas-led attacks on Israel in October that killed more than 1,200 people and left another 250 taken hostage.
Israel’s military response has, to date, killed nearly 36,000 Palestinians and caused widespread destruction and a looming famine in the besieged and bombarded enclave.

The law applies on paper if you are member, but no powers to enforce an arrest as it is against nation's sovereignty. Think like a regular court, but lack of enforcement power to carry out.

Yes but also no.
- "Yes" early on they told Russia to stop it & kicked them out of several "daughter parts" of the UN relating to human rights etc because of what they were doing, when Russia didn't take the hint everybody started doing economic sanctions etc.
- Later on Ukraine tried to sue for war crimes in the ICJ and that case actually failed because of not clear enough evidence, so that was kind of a "No"
This was then followed up with the ICC (specifically NOT a part of the UN) looking at the same thing with better/more/more recent evidence and concluding that Russia does commit war crimes, put out the arrest warrant etc. And while they keep hammering on being different bodies, the UN is in line with the ICC now that the ICC has made a verdict. (ie: UN does agree that Russia is committing war crimes & the ICJ just lacked the info needed in the past)

Since you're apparently clueless, it's because they have grown to currently 193 members, the overwhelming majority of which represent full countries, so between them they literally represent the world. Palestine will be 194 soon btw, as much as we hate Hamas because they literally go against _everything_ the UN stands for, Israel has shown that Palestine needs a voice in the UN 🤷♂
Oh and there's 195 countries in the world, so between that and currently 193 UN members (again, not all members representing full countries) there's less than 10 countries left in the world that are not in some way involved. So yes, the UN effectively has authority over the world.

The arrest request in the case of the ICJ can be followed up by members and non members. But mainly goes for those nation that subscribed to the ability of order of this court. Nations not subscribing or recognizing the ICJ are free to do so, but most likely will not. Nations recognizing the ICJ are still free to follow up or not, but when not following up on it's orders, will be noticed and has consequences for such nations.

It's very easy. Hamas is not a country, and Palestine is not recognized as a state, let alone signatory of the Genocide Convention. Even if it where, Hamas is not the official army of the state, but an armed terrorist (or resistance, depending on who sees it) group, fighting against an occupying force. Israel, on the other hand, is a state signatory to the Genocide Convention and has to comply with those obligations.
According to this, if Israel dixes the infrastructure in the safe zone, bring aid and food and water there, they are allowed to invade Rafah. Take notes Israel. Also, please address Egypt blocking the Rafah crossing... I thought it was a humanitarian crisis, yet not big enough to force Egypt to rise above their petty political games? Not enough to allow refugees to get out either. You're all complicit then.

Israel is a brutal fascist apartheid state that has been illegally occupying Gaza since 2006 and as such gave up its right to self defense. And furthermore he Palestinians as an occupied people had the legal right to resistance to their illegal occupation by Israel.

If you were half as clever as you think you are then you would be able to understand why they don't try tell Hamas what to do. Since you are not i will help: it wouldn't amount to anything, unlike Hamas who clearly doesn't give a f*ck about their people, Israel might actually listen. Hamas wouldn't and Israel would try use that as reasoning.
The power of the UN is that they will "pull strings behind the curtain" to straight up destroy your country if you don't comply, but Hamas already did that to Gaza & the civilians in Gaza have already suffered enough. So instead they tell Israel to sit back down and hope Hamas follows, then go back to trying to talk towards a proper solution.
If Israel complies and Hamas doesn't follow it will be the end of Hamas trough "external parties" (just think about who is getting embarrassed the most by all of this and has the means to swoop in at night with a fleet of stealth helis)

ICJ, we almost gave up on you; trying to formulate and design a legitimate and effective replacement (for the ICJ and the U.N).
But maybe that will be unnecessary.
UN (and all that is attached to it) has always been and will always be impartial, just because you've been told otherwise by people with an agenda doesn't mean they ever have or ever will target specific people/countries/whatever for other goals or "because member x wants it", instead they do "what it says on the tin"
They want to unite all nations & step1 on that goal is always put safety of civilians first, because a nation is built on civilians, not some small group we call government. This goal of "everyone should have it good" is the main driving reason behind all of their actions, which includes things like the decisions of this court.
Next time somebody tries to tell you the UN or any of its 'daughter organizations' are bad just roll your eyes and divert the subject or leave, UN is here for _ALL_ people, and certainly not for only some specific governments.

Having said all this, even if we take Israel's gross behavior into account, it should be noted that if you think about the situation a bit you can probably guess why they told _Israel_ to stop instead of _Hamas,_ because Israel might actually listen where-as expecting that from Hamas would be a joke. At the end of the day both are being awful & both should stop, the hope is that if Israel stops Hamas is smart enough to try play it off as "we wanted to stop too" but only time will tell 🤷♂
