I had the soil in my raised beds tested, and the folks at the lab said to improve my PH that I should use ammonium sulfate for fertilizer instead of digging in compost as I usually do. I must say that the results have been good: I had my second harvest of green beans today and while the plants are smallish the plants are seriously loaded with beans. Tonight we will have about a quart full of perfect green beans. And, looking at the little beans I would say that it looks like I will need to pick again in only 3 days time. good soil = good yields! And the compost went to the potato patch, which actually needed it
My buckets are doing pretty well even in spite of cold and hail. I covered them with plastic through the worst of the weather. I have been delighted with the peppers in buckets, bringing them in to a south windowsill when the weather turns cold. I've picked peppers clear into January here in the northern Rockies. Have had several converts to buckets up here. The video was fun. I particularly like seeing Molly supervising and waiting for her share. She was a wonderful dog.
That's all looking good. Your sure to get a good harvest. My bucket garden is not doing so good this yr though. l was really late sowing/planting due to health, plus the rubbish Spring we have had, but iv got lettuce, spring onions, swiss chard, diff herbs , new potatoes, all in those black buckets. You motivate me to keep trying. Iv read it not too late to sow a few more things so l'll keep going and see what we get this year. l'll be interested to see how yr swede plants are as l'd love to have a go growing them in the containers.
This year has our usual 15 buckets of Red Chief earlies on the patio. Stagger planted so, dump a bucket as needed all summer. We have 1 Cauliflower plant each 3gal bucket, 4 now, again stagger planted, and 6 more just germinated for a steady fresh supply. 2 pepper plants in 3gal buckets that were wintered over from last year. Lastly, 4, 10gal buckets with 1 tomato plant in each. Now, if we can just get the weather to cooperate, we should have a good year. Last couple of days, high 90's, today 101 degrees. Then a thunderstorm. Temp dropped 20 degrees in 15 minutes. Low temps high 70's at night. The plants were drooping so bad it looked like we were growing baked potatoes. 😩
I'm trying spring onions the way they grow them in Asia. They cut the green tops off, and then using scissor, cut the tops into half inch (1cm) lengths ready to be fried as a base for most of their recipes. The grow back rate is quite astonishing, and the bulb can increase in size to a point where you could decide to eat that as well. Your 30 carrots idea far surpasses sowing seed willy nilly as well. Cheers from chilly South Australia.
These small buckets are excellent for making a Square Foot Bucket Garden. Check this out: studio.th-cam.com/users/playlistPLrdJ3rKwLaerWRUeWsGtzXD0Omkv3jgvs/edit
Giving this container growing this year. Tried a few years ago with poor results. Giving a go again this year and so far things are going good. We are having some hot weather here in the US also. Watching your channel has been very enjoyable to watch. I'll try to send some photos if I can. Potatoes are doing quite well so far. Keep up the good videos.
I had to turn out a few buckets early, as the leaves had turned yellow and replanted with Mizuna and Chinese White Celery. Have many potatoes not yet done. Be doing some fall Romaine Lettuce. I have Red Sun Shallots and Yellow Dutch Shallots that are about done. I'll be replanting with lettuce, carrots, kale, and cabbage.
I have been growing stuff in buckets since finding your channel - 1st year potatoes were great - last year they only got to about 12 inches tall NEVER flowered and died off - I did recover some small potatoes from them - This year it looks like its going to do the same I have the EXACT same potatoes as the man next door that has his in the earth - we BOTH planted on the same day - His are 18-24 inch tall a different green colour leave and are flowering It was fresh unplanted soil in the buckets this year ! ANY IDEAS - I cant understand it
I have a small suggestion, just a suggestion mind you because I don’t know how the search function works on TH-cam, maybe change your channel name to Home Grown Veg In Buckets

I still start my carrots in a bowl like you taught me years ago. So much easier..
