Mikey will explain how to match your yarn to your crochet hook by using packaging from Bernat Yarn Products. We will also cover how to chain within this tutorial. Mikey, I can't tell you how much I have learned from the Curtzy tutorials. I have only ever crocheted afghans. I learned I wasn't moving the crochet hook right. It is going to increase my speed.
Even the slip knot. I never liked my chains I watched and watched your hands. I am working with you. It's great watching on TV I can work and not bother with my iPad. Thank you, you have opened a whole new world for an 80 yr. old lady. I was self taught from a very old Paton & Baldwins book. It just showed how to do the sts and a granny sq. which was fine for then.

there is a right and wrong side to your crochet projects....if you search "Right Side / Wrong Side - The Crochet Side" on youtube this video will explain how to tell which side is which..End at wrong side row means after you establish the right and wrong sides of your work when you get the end of the wrong side row stop....hope that helps Cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)

the reason some patterns recommend you do a gauge swatch is to make sure your stitches with the hook recommended is coming out to the right measurements for the project so it works up right..it sounds like your stitches are more on the loose side so instead of coming out to the right measurements you are needing to adjust your hook size down to get the right sizing....

Part #2 ....this can happen a lot with beginners before they get there stitches down and consistent but some crocheters just tend to stitch more loosely than others ....also if you want to unravel the swatch and reuse the yarn thats fine....hope that helps you ....cathy@ the crochet crowd :)

However, I will not be defeated! Being a visual learner I may stand a chance in actually learning how to overcome this challenge this time. Thank you so very much. Now, here I go on a merry hunt for my old crochet hooks & some yarn so that I can actually start my marathon sessions of learning how to crochet once and for all! usually the patterns will tell you which hooks to use for the project to get the correct sizing for the project.....but if your winging something the bigger the # of strands the larger hook you will want to use..... so for example if I have 3 strands going at the same time I might use a k hook but anymore than that I would use an N hook or larger ..... just go with what your comfortable with ....cathy@ the crochet crowd helpdesk :)

There is no right or wrong way. This is one way and there are many others. Whatever works for the individual is their right way.
I usually look for crochet videos based on length. I usually pick the shortest bc my experience has been crotchet videos can drag, and drag, and drag. Either explaining each step multiple times or the 10 different ways of doing it.

Wow...five stings at once! I can't help but wonder how much that afghan weighed! lol Really awesome tutorials, can't wait for the next one. I noted that you have some smaller bamboo hooks. I never use the plastic hooks, they just don't feel right, and my 9 yo son crochets as well, usually with my hooks. The bamboo ones look beautiful to me, but my question is, how do they feel? Are they fairly sturdy, or do they feel like they might snap in your hand if you get a little to tight?

I have a question about making things from two or more strands: should I choose hook size which is sum of recommended yarn of each strand? F.ex. I use two 5 mm strands, should I use 10 mm hook? :)

This was very helpful. Thank you. I have been confused somewhat on the relationship between yarn, needle and gauge on a pattern. If I want to make something I see a pattern for with a different type of material than what the pattern calls for for example, how do I determine the needle to use? Here's an example.... I see a pattern for a sweater for my dog.....well in Minnesota a heavy sweater would be nice and I could follow the pattern exactly, however here in Costa Rica, a lighter sweater is best and I want to use more of a crochet thread than a yard, how do I make those adjustments? Also, I like making toys for my doggies but most of the patterns I see are toys for big dogs, and again I'm wanting to make something smaller so I want to use a lighter weight material and smaller needle but I don't know how to calculate the adjustment. All I've learned lately is that I don't actually know enough about crocheting.....not as much as I though I knew that's for sure.... :)
Also, not all needles seem to be consistently labeled.....some are letters, some a numbers some are in MM and while I live out of the country in Latin America I'm even more confused by the needle size selection process?! Can you make this less confusing for me?! I'm lost a bit and getting more and more confused trying to find my way out and figure out what my question actually is...... :)! Yikes!

NO SANSWER about how many sts in an inch on / g-h-I Hook ???
Susan Jensen Wouldn't it depend on the yarn? Usually on the label of the yarn it will say how many stitches per inch one should get for their suggested size of hook. Patterns will also say so many stitches per inch. So one has to do one of the "dreaded" sample swatches to see how many stitches one IS getting. :) There's no hard and fast rule as we all tend to naturally crochet and knit at differing tensions. So if you are getting more stitches per inch than it says on the label or pattern you need to change out your crochet hook to one size larger, and if you are getting less stitches per inch than they suggest then you need to go down to a smaller hook. Often one size down is sufficient but use whatever size of hook you need to gain the correct number of stitches per inch that the pattern suggests. If you don't do this you can end up with a sweater that's too large or too small and believe me I've done that! :P :) Hope this helps!

yes both afghans are catherine wheel afghans one is an extreme one using multiple strands of yarn at once and a large hook and the other is the stitch using regular thinner ply yarn and a smaller sz hook ....Cathy@The Crochet Crowd :)

When making an afgan, which size hook to yarn do you suggest?
I just wanted to reply to William Daughtrey but I can't do so directly on his post.
There is no rule about how to hold the yarn and the hook. There are some very common ways that a lot of people choose but the key is to find the way that makes the craft feel comfortable for you.
If you look on youtube you will see different people do it different ways with good results.
The only way I can crochet is by tensioning the yarn round my left index finger only. For me that is comfortable and works well. So I would encourage you and other beginners who are struggling to hold the yarn and hook to try different ways until you are happy.

How do you work out what size hook and what weight of a ball of yarn is if you only have nothing except 100% acrilic and washing instruction on the label? I’m confused 🤪
Also I have some yarn which are DK weight but are very different yarn widths. Some are thin or thicker than others😠

Mikey, love your videos! I remember seeing it in one video, but I can't find it now; about the dye lots on the label. I ordered some Bernat blanket yarn and Bernat baby blanket yarn, I can't fine the dye lot on the label. do they have dye lots for those? one is solid taupe and the other is "little sand castles". help please lol
Hi Amy....your best bet is to get a hold of Bernat themselves. Being they are the ones with the information you need. Also dye lots tend to change even for the same color.
Mary Miranda thank you. I'm assuming I have the same dye lot if there is one listed. All the numbers match on all skeins and they all look the same on color. It's weird bc on other brands I can find the dye lot number indicated by the words dye lot lol. Thank you!

How can I get the hooks??
I made a mistake. I went to buy crocheting materials today, and my mom took me to Wal-mart. I picked up a set of hooks(D-K) and some yarn. Once I saw this video though, I realized the yarn needed size L(hook). Do I need to return it, because it's only one size up from the largest of my hooks.
You should always have a varitey of hooks. Never know when you'll need them.

No, they are not all the same length. That is another variation that would depend on personal taste.
Would depend on how you hold your hook and the size of your hand. If the end of the hook's handle digs into your hand, it could be uncomfortable.
@@TheCrochetCrowd Hmm, thank you. Is there some standard? I had read somewhere that 4 inches overall length was the average. I really want to get this correct since I hope to one day sell them. Thanks for any and all advice you can give.

There are MANY, MANY ways of holding the hook, and the yarn also, so don't limit yourself to just one way, find which works best for you.

There is no wrong way or right way; just your way and my way. Whatever works for the individual is perfect.
I guess I am one of these people who will never learn to crochet.The way the yarn has to be held is very awkward and I can't do it. Also the yarn keeps slipping out from under the hook and I keep rewinding over and over and it slips around and I just can't make it work. The only way I can do it is while pinching the wrapped yarn in the hook I use my index finger nail to push the yarn over and it makes a chain. I know it's weird and hard to explain but it is the only way I can do it.
Sometimes it's really hard to grasp a concept from a video, it just is. :) I'd suggest finding someone who crochets to show you directly how they do it. Yarn shops and hobby shops often hold free or minimal charge beginner classes and there an instructor can explain the things that don't make sense. It's helped me more than once. :) Also if one instructor doesn't seem to make sense, try another. I had an oil painting instructor and we never ever agreed on how to paint the sky, just saying some people do things one way and you may do it another. I'm sure there's a solution out there for you!
William, hold the yarn & needle the way it feels comfortable to you. There is no certain way to hold it. What ever floats your boat, do it that way!!! Good luck.
