Mikey, Curtzy Crochet has found THE TOP CROCHET MAN IN THE WORLD. I've been crocheting for a while, but I'm gonna watch all 24 of these lessons! Thanks!
I just love you Mikey....you are a wonderful tutor and make everything so much fun!!! I have been yarning for over 20 years and I still am learning new techniques through your videos. I will be teaching two friends how to crochet within the next month and I am recommending this series for them to watch even before we begin so that they can visualize the basics. One of them is a skilled knitter and is now making baby hats for your charity! I have done 5 so far...my goal is 20!! Love you!
I am so happy to run into your tutorial. My 7 year old has been begging me to teach her and with your great enthusiasm and instructive videos I feel up to the task :-)
I've been crocheting 23 years. It is my favorite past time. Ppeople often tell me they don't have the patience but it is relaxing to me. I crochet from the simplist to the most intricate. I crochet with threads and yarns. Have made lots of gifts.
I've been crocheting for about a few years now, after watching this, there are a few things I was already doing on my own. I love the ball of yarn in the bowl Idea. will be trying this later when I crochet the rest of my scarf.
Thanks for showing how to sit as well as how to hold the hook and yarn. I am in a wheelchair. I also have a bad left wrist so putting the yarn in a bowl at the same level as my hands really helps. It also keeps the yarn out of my cat's paws if she is tempted to play with it.
Great points on posture - something we don't think about much until our backs/arms/neck are in pain ! It seems people hold their yarn and hooks differently, so I think that's just a personal preference - no right or wrong way if it works for you - but beginners need to know a basic way to hold before they can find what works for them. Well done as always, Mikey ! I'm forwarding your video to my daughter who has a two-year-old and sees the benefits of knowing how to knit and crochet. Tk you!
Nice lesson! eventhough I'm crocheting for about a year and a half now, position is something allways needed. Loved the lesson and looking forward to the next 23!
loving your channel ! some friends with pets put their yarn inside a soda bottle (a big one, cut in the middle, taking out part of the body, making the bottle smaller, the two then can connect after the yarn is inside, coming through the the top opening) that way the cat doesn't get to play :) and for chair, who has a feeding chair (for breast feeding) they are usually perfect for crochet and knitting
Thank you Mikey for taking your time to create this videos they are very helpful and for someone that is on a budget and cannot afford to pay for Crotches classes, you make it easy to learn. May you always Stay Blessed.....
I juast want to say Mikey you do an EXCELLENT job explaining and teaching! Its rare to find people who give information to explain it in an easy to understand way...and its' fun too! Thanks so much for these tutorials!!
Thank you, Mikey, I have been experiencing a severe neck pain lately but then watched your video, and I now crochet pain-free again, YAY!!! I love your videos, they are so informative.
i have to say your so talented and have learned so much watching your videos. I love this new series because you break down the steps so well and are a great teacher :)
Wow thank you Mikey! I crochet for a few years and finally paying attention to my body position while crocheting. I suffer from neck and head pains and maybe these tips will be the solution, I hope. Thank you!!
Thanks so much for these tutorials! I've been crocheting since February, so these will really enable me to learn new skills and refine the ones I have. I hadn't thought much about yarn placement, so I'm grateful for the tips. I'm looking forward to the next lesson!
I'm working on my first major project a ripple stitch blanket that is basically going to fit a queen size bed when I'm done (I got a little bit over zealous with my chain stitches) Crocheting for 6-7 hours a night every night for there weeks straight WRECKED my neck to the point I could barely move it or sleep. It's taken almost two weeks for me to be able to turn my head normal again. If only I'd found this video sooner! Thanks for the tips Mike!
What a wonderful tutorial Mikey, I suffer from neck pain and the glasses problem, I really should look at my positioning. I also hold my hook like yourself, glad it's not just me!! Keep up the amazing work.
That was amazingly helpful. I'm a beginner, and I'm glad I saw this video before I got into any bad body position habits while working. Now crochet will be fun, and not a pain in the neck, lol.
Thank you so much for this I suffer with arthritis and those tips are so simple but I have never thought of position I sit or where the yarn is. The yarn around the left hand is a miracle to me being mostly self taught after a couple of lessons from an aunt as a child I cobbled my own technique. This is so comfortable and will allow me to crochet so so much longer thanks again you have made me a very happy crocheter. I firmly believe that crocheting keeps my arthritic fingers supple and because its medicinal I need more yarn lol xx
I am now crocheting for over 10 years, but I've never stoped to think about that annoying pain in my neck! This video has been very helpful! Thank you, Mikey! :)
I just want to thank you for sharing with such a phenomenal teaching style...I feel understood and supported when I watch your videos...Kudos Mikey...Excellent work...I am an absolute beginner and it is still very overwhelming to me in that I feel there is a key element missing in my understanding of crotchet...but I feel confident that if i stick to your teachings I will actually learn it and learn it right! Thanks so much, E.
I've been crocheting since age 11 holding my hook like a pencil (the way you don't ). I'm anxious to watch more videos and hope I can break 46 years of habit. My wrist and thumb really hurt the way I'm holding my hook. Also do it that way because my mom did!
Hi Erin... are you looking for the hook bag/case you see at the beginning of the video ? if so, these cases can be found on Curtzy . com (cant add links or addresses here so squish address together for use and add w w w) ...if not let me know and i will try to help you further... Cathy@ the Crochet Crowd
Good advice, Mikey! :) I learned these things myself when I started crocheting about 25 years ago. I hold my yarn just slightly different from you but it works for me. A comfy and supportive place to sit is vital!
I wish that I had seen this video a year ago when I first started crocheting! I developed horrible right arm/shoulder pain from crocheting in an awkward position. I actually had to stop crocheting for a while and then experiment to find the best position for comfort. Thanks for this video!
If you have already started your project you could leave a bit of slack enough to maneuver the thread around and roll it into smaller balls to continue, that might be easier to manage, if leaving slack to roll the thread into balls doesn't work you may have to cut the thread and then re-attach it when your done rolling it. There is also info on the internet on how to roll yarn and thread so you have a center pull,if you do a google search it should pop up Hope that helps Cathy@ the crochet crowd
I have found that using an old round baby wipe container is good to keep the ball of yarn in and use.Or even a coffee container with a hole punched in the lid.It is hard to do but you can use a hole punch to do so.
there are some variation to how you can hold your yarn....if the way mikey is showing doesn't work for you then you could maybe search online to find some examples of different ways to hold the yarn and keep your tension ....just do whatever is easiest and most comfortable for you Cathy @ The Crochet Crowd
The "flat" crochet hooks, Susan Bates hooks, they can be sharp and will separate the fibers of the yarn. However, I love them so much and I found that if I file the sharp edges, they are perrrfect.
You would faint if you saw how I hold my hook and yarn! I am self taught from years ago when we didn't have videos to tell us what to do. I learned from some magazine, I think and basically did my own thing. I do everything with the right hand, hold the yarn, the hook and the piece. I know it seems like how could that work, but it does for me. I have however been trying to learn to do it this way! Hard to change old habits though. :-)
Wow thank you so much! Your vids are so informative and I love how you go step-by-step I watch other videos and was ready to give up and then my friend told me about you guys and I'm in love I will not be returning my crochet stuff I will actually be making things now thank you !!!!!😀
I have been crocheting for years but I think I can alway learn something new from other people. And i did, thanks for the great egonomic sitting tips. I wonder if you know about how to wind a ball of yarn from the inside out. If not I can teach you. It is great and the ball doesn't roll. The yarn comes from the inside.:)
why i'm hearing 2 or 3 people at the same time?? this video is soooo important it seems like it was done thinking of me. I always have bad posture while crochetting. Thank you very much for this, i have bought different devices and try to use them from gloves to neck pillows. how about making tutorials about vision, lighting? those are the things that are taking away my comfort as well.
It's hard for me to get comfortable, so thx for the tips! I have health issues with pain, like many others do, that's unbearable at times...crochet takes my mind where it needs to be so I can try to ignore it. I have a good tip from my blog concerning yarn when crocheting: put it in a coffee can. They wash well so nothing smells like coffee. If you have a cat or dog or small children, you can cover the can with the lid and put a smoothly cut hole in the lid for the yarn to go through! If the piece you're working on is small enough (might need a bigger can for this) and you're going somewhere that you can crochet, just put your work, hook and extra yarn inside the can, put a lid on it that has no hole, and off you go. You can put the can in a tote bag if you don't want everyone to see your coffee can.
I do think this video is more about personal preference in that a person needs to find what works for them. Obviously, if your neck and legs hurt when you crochet, you'd need to rethink your positioning. Also I really wish you would have covered that there is more than one way to hold the yarn. Just like holding the hook - you do it one way because its how you were shown. I hold my yarn differently for the same reason :)
I love your thorough and informative tutorials! Where can I find a hook case like you have in the video.... zippered, with room on both sides for hook storage. My small bi-fold case just isn't cutting it anymore!
Remember by any chance the first email I sent you sayin how kewl it is that we hold our hook the same way? This is the first time I had seen this video so that was neat. Then, in the vid u did exactly what I do with yarn balls....a bowl, well, that is, til the past2days. I've been working on a basket liner (using a circle then the basket weave stitch i learned from u) Im almost done & then i will have a snagless basket4my pesky yarn balls. I can't wait to post it to facebook for you to see
@916simone Put the yarn balls in a plastic bag. Make holes on the side of the bag and bring out the yarn from one balll through one hole. That way the yarns come out through different holes and do not get tangled
These cases can be found on Curtzy . com (cant add links or addresses here so squish address together for use and add w w w) Cathy@ the Crochet Crowd :)
Its interesting your views on posture as my physio and chiropractor have different suggestions on the ideal posture for "seated crafting" - where you are correct in how to sit your handling of your work is actually causing a reverse curve in your neck (which eventually will lead to chronic headaches as well as arthritis) you should be sitting in such away where your head remains back and square with your shoulders - this does require you hold your work at chest level or higher (a frustration when working on anything larger than a scarf or baby blanket however) this will save you much grief later on.
@916simone Yes... yarn can be a pain when it gets knotted and tangled....if you can't pull the yarn from the middle of the yarn skien then wrap the skien into balls this can be done with a yarn winder or by hand .....if using balls of yarn a trick is to place the balls of yarn in a bowl to prevent it from rolling away from you when using it.....hope that helps....cathy@mikey's helpdesk :)
One solution to the 'glasses' problem if one needs the glasses only for the crochet work, not to see the television, is to buy 'reading' glasses in the correct prescription, especially the little half-glasses. That makes it easy to look over them at the television and to then look down through the magnification in the glasses at one's work in progress.
According to your video I've been crocheting in the wrong sitting position and putting my yarn in the wrong place since I've been crocheting! Ha ha ha! Great video for beginners, though!
Me and my ten year old daughter just started the loom knitting a week ago. We have both managed to mess up a few things of yarn cause they keep getting tangled up. Can you recommend something we can do to keep the yarn from getting tangled up please. Im loving your tuturials and we both want to keep knitting and learning to crochet but i cant afford to keep replacing the yarn. Please help..
I've been watching you for years now Mickey and am just now stumbling across this awesome video of tips and techniques. thank you bunches for all your wonderful tutorials! I have a question thou... I am disabled, and my hobby is my therapy. it relaxes me and takes the mind of off my physical limitations and pain. therefore I confess that I do nearly all of my crocheting either in the bed whether sitting up with legs crossed together, or lying down. one of the things I suffer with is osteoarthritis in the neck and spine. I also have a hard time with my neck from a herniated disc. how harmful would you say that these positions are on me? your input and advice is greatly appreciated! much love dear friend and teacher!
Hi Mikey, I thought I would view this video because I needed to revisit the basics, but most of the tips in here are things I didn't know about thank you! Quick question, I have a leather couch and where I have my yarn works for me, but does go over the arm of the couch. Will this also add for friction?? Thanks and keep up the helpful videos! I appreciate them! :)
I've been holding my crochet hook like a pencil in my right hand with my thumb resting on the bottom of the needle rest. Am I creating problems that I don't realize. I think I better check your other videos from Jo-Ann's Fabric store. These videos are great because I never learned about the importance of the gauge if I want to adjust a project I like. So is it okay to hold the hook like I do?
thank yoi so much for this video!! I've been crocheting on and off since I was 9 I basically self thought but I struggle with tension on big projects. I do have one question ... when I crochet the way your mom thought you my wrist hurts very quickly.( I know the elbows have a lot to do with it as I am a hairstylist) but is their any tips yoi have for the wrist or fingers. or can I just stick to the other way??? thanks again!
@susieqmcf Ohhhh....dont be anxious...if you hold your hook differently thats ok....there are many ways people do things none more right than the other...hold your hook the way you want and try to get as much out of the tutorials as you can as far as other things go.....good luck....Cathy@mikeys helpdesk :)
Oh my gosh….I do almost everything the way you say not to:). On the couch, legs up and to the side, yarn pulled out over the arm onto the floor of the couch and no shoulder support. Yikes!
Mikey, Curtzy Crochet has found THE TOP CROCHET MAN IN THE WORLD. I've been crocheting for a while, but I'm gonna watch all 24 of these lessons! Thanks!
I have looked at so many crochet videos for beginners, but this is the best. He answered questions and demonstrated things that others didn’t.

The "flat" crochet hooks, Susan Bates hooks, they can be sharp and will separate the fibers of the yarn. However, I love them so much and I found that if I file the sharp edges, they are perrrfect.
I bought a special nursing pillow to prop up my arms when I crochet. It works great. Also instead of watching TV I like to listen to audiobooks.
That's a great idea!
You would faint if you saw how I hold my hook and yarn! I am self
taught from years ago when we didn't have videos to tell us what to do.
I learned from some magazine, I think and basically did my own thing. I

have however been trying to learn to do it this way! Hard to change

Its funny because I was just complaining today about the pain in my neck and back and arms ! I was sitting very badly, thank you so much for this vid!
Good job Mikey. I can't wait to learn difficult stitches.
The points about the care of your work and yarn were extremely helpful - thank-you
You are so sweet!!! thanks for the advice of posture!!! my neck always suffers!! Thanks!
love the video! You make everything so clear and understandable. However, I do prefer Susan Bates crochet hooks, vs, Boyles.
Great info i especially liked the bowl tip. And I'm glad to know now how to avoid neck strain etc.
You can sit and crochet where ever you are comfortable :) Cathy@ the Crochet Crowd :)
great idea with putting the ball of yarn in the bowl!!!! when can we expect more videos of your lessons??
This is the kind of thing no one ever tells you about!
Excellent! Very professional and thorough.
This was very helpful, I never thought of half these things but I experienced alot of what you suggested so thanks for the tips :-)
Wow thank you so much! Your vids are so informative and I love how you go step-by-step I watch other videos and was ready to give up and then my friend told me about you guys and I'm in love I will not be returning my crochet stuff I will actually be making things now thank you !!!!!😀
Your absolutely amazing! I was trying to learn on my own and was becoming very frustrated.. thank you so much for doing this! I love you so much! :D
Thank you for this great information. Looking forward to watching the whole series!
I just love your videos and lessons... thanks!!!
I was really impressed by this video sessions.Thank you for sharing
i love your lessons... and ofcourse i adore your hooks kit....
I've been crocheting for a few years now and never knew how to get rid of the neck pain! thanks

Also I really wish you would have covered that there is more than one way to hold the yarn. Just like holding the hook - you do it one way because its how you were shown. I hold my yarn differently for the same reason :)
Very clear and well done.. LOVE THE SOFT MUSIC PLAYING TOO :)
You are a wonderful teacher!
@916simone Put the yarn balls in a plastic bag. Make holes on the side of the bag and bring out the yarn from one balll through one hole. That way the yarns come out through different holes and do not get tangled
this was so helpful. thank you mikey! much love from hawaii~

What a great lesson.
Once again thanks for the great advice. everything makes sense!!!
TTThank you so much for your show.i'm from Myanmar :) :) :)
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
Excellent tutorial!!
Nice tips for positioning! Thank you!!
This is great Mikey. Thank you so much
Hi, great video.I have tiny hands(size of a 7 year old) so I cant separate my pinky from my other fingers. Is there another method to hold my yarn?
💕❤️💕I like this tutorial Mikey !
According to your video I've been crocheting in the wrong sitting position and putting my yarn in the wrong place since I've been crocheting! Ha ha ha! Great video for beginners, though!
Thanks for the lessons! Love this.
Fabulous! Thanks!
I also have a hard time with my neck from a herniated disc. how harmful would you say that these positions are on me? your input and advice is greatly appreciated!
much love dear friend and teacher!

Are there plans to release hi-def video's?
Thank you Mikey!
I love your videos!!!
hello,is there videos for teaching people who r using their left hands? 😃
Thanks this is great!
I would love to know what yarn and pattern you are using in this video.
Hi would you recommend using a pillow to make your body straight
hi mike! how do I get added to the newsletter??
Excellent tuition! JCY
@susieqmcf Ohhhh....dont be anxious...if you hold your hook differently thats ok....there are many ways people do things none more right than the other...hold your hook the way you want and try to get as much out of the tutorials as you can as far as other things go.....good luck....Cathy@mikeys helpdesk :)
thank you very much 😊 شكرا جزيلا
Do you think this will help me with my tendinitis. I got it last year after making a few things:(
Oh my gosh….I do almost everything the way you say not to:). On the couch, legs up and to the side, yarn pulled out over the arm onto the floor of the couch and no shoulder support. Yikes!
Thank you!🌹
