An air fryer is basically a small convection oven. It cooks by circulating hot air around the food. It's somewhat better for you, due to that the grease drips down off of the food.
Yeah it's basically a toaster oven. Nothing about frying. To fry, you need oil. Fancy name used to market. Guess you're just not as fancy when you say "let me toss it in the oven" vs "let me air fry it" or something.
An air fryer makes a huge difference. As clearly illustrated in this video. I use both and an air fryer makes a huge difference when it comes to certain foods.
Pro tip; a very light brushing of oil on each side of most breaded things you put in the airfryer eliminates dryness while also not making everything soggy.
Imo it's kinda hard to compare they each have their purposes. Personally I find i use my air fryermore often. I have the power xl vortex pro it has a rack system and rotisserie system rather then just a basic basket. You can fry whole chickens on rotisserie or I have the rotisserie skewer set up that I just made country ribs with and boy they were amazing. But if I wanna make something like a casserole then obviously the regular oven is the way to go that's why I say it's hard to compare they are each in their own realms. Also with air fryer it's more convenient for many foods then preheating and essentially using way more either gas or electric to use a oven to just heat up a single portion of one or two thing's.
I agree, the big thing for me is the air fryer is convenient just because of how quickly it can preheat. When I get home from work its much more convenient to quickly throw something in the air fryer and go shower than it is for me to wait for my full sized oven to preheat.

I'm curious which kind of oven was used for the test. Since I'm wondering how well that would hold up against a convection oven, which also has a fan and circulates the air.
You forgot to mention that an oven takes time to come up to temp and it heats the kitchen. I love the convenience of the air fryer and the very minimal clean up.
Every god damn time, I wonder why I'm here. And yet, every god damn time I am here. Asking the same question. And I'll be here next time, asking why again 🤣🤣🤣
I like the extra crunch, but the added bonus was that it the air fryer heats up in 3 min & it cools down quickly. Not changing the temperature of the whole house in the process.
Important question for this comparison: Are you using a conventional oven or a convection oven? It will make. Huge difference for the items you tested on.
An air fryer is a convection oven. In australia we have fan forced bake and fan forced grill. same concept as the air fryer, it's just built into the oven.
@@greatleader4841 and that was my point of asking. I have a convection oven and have been telling friends and family that the air friers are essentially mini convection ovens.
@@Mustang8867 We have 5 settings here, all the fan forced ones and traditional ones for the ovens. Saves needing to buy a convection oven and other appliances when it comes all in one. The instructions on food also have "oven" and "forced air bake" with time adjustments for it.
12:49... My bet on those last two being different then the first 4 or 5 or whatever it was is the amount of moister in the food. The more moister in the food the harder it will be for the smaller device to get the water out. Basically for less moist foods the smaller space of the air fryer allows it to dry out the edges of the food quicker, but for more moist foods the larger space of the over allows it to not be basically steaming the food once enough moister turns to steam. I will say though to your first comment about the oil, you 100% can and should toss in a bit of oil for things like fries, like about a tablespoon, the point is you are still adding the oil to the food just not near as much, without adding any oil you are not really air "frying" but rather air "roasting". Now when I make things like corn on the cob in on, I will take the corn put it on tin foil, get the corn a tiny bit wet and then put in butter, salt, pepper, Cajun, and some red pepper, wrap up the corn in the foil and then cook it without adding oil because the butter does the same job, but yeah most foods you should be putting in some oil into it.
Rofl, well... I, like you, have been told by numerous friends to get an air fryer, and I've had no desire because my oven works perfectly fine. You, though, have just sold me on the advantages of the air fryer without even showing how to use one. You're good lol. Looks like you stayed up all night to bring us this video ;)
Great Video. Air fryer for the win, love the air fryer we have, also here's a good tip, you can cook almost any frozen food like the ones in this video, by setting the temp to 390-400 degrees, and using 12-18 minutes time, cooks almost anything perfectly in the air fryer, Corn Dogs and Onion Rings and Hot Pockets are amazing in the air fryer also.
So I got my first air fryer 2 months ago and I didn’t think there was going to be much of a difference but I love the consistency in how it cooks food and crunch of the food, I barely use my oven unless it’s for a family sized meal. Love your videos by the way
You should review the taclight. Freeze it, run over it, test the visibility at two miles. I've searched your channel and can't see if you've done a review on it yet.
Not EVERYTHING is better in an air fryer, but it cooks way faster, doesn't heat up the house, it's easy to clean and usually it does taste better. Most of the time it's either just as good, or way better than in the oven.
I like that it doesn't have much warm up time it's great for personal sized food. I would always use an oven for cookies, pies, hams, and large things.
My Standard oven is a Convection (Fan) oven. I bought an Air Fryer a few months back and it's been my go to. Due to its size it doesn't need to be as hot and cooks at a lower temp. It can take some experimenting tho. It's definitely a bonus in hotter weather and I'm now able to cook joints of meat and whole chickens in. Sometimes it's not quite big enough to cook a whole meal but if I'm cooking Fries, Onion rings and chicken nuggets I put a rack in it and put the nuggets on that. The whole lot is done in 18 minutes. Whole Pizza is probably the only thing I've not cooked in it as many don't fit,.so that's all my standard oven gets used for now. I have used it to reheat left over slices at 4am tho, and they come out great.
I remember when air friers first became a thing about 3ish years ago and I worked at Kohl's and oh my goodness watching old women almost get into fist fights about air friers around the holidays was great.....
HAHAH man just had such a massive laugh on YOUR OLD PERCEPTION OF AIR FRYER, haha OIL AND AIR. Thanks so much for the minor laughter in the day, didnt laugh entire day.
So many factors and variables need to be considered. Cook times, temp, oil spray, brand and type and size of air fryer, etc. Fun video regardless. I always enjoy Tyler's videos.
I see you've learned your lesson from the previous taste tests and didn't proclaim one to be far superior than the other before the test. Based on the track record, I'm guessing that you thought the oven would be superior 😂
Having a Toaster oven and an air fryer is the best combo since you can cook some bigger things in the toaster oven that don’t cook well in the air fryer, make toast, and get the crispy and efficient results of the air fryer.
If you add 15% more cook time for bigger items, that deficit would dissappear. But the point was made very well. Those air fryers make great Christmas presents and being 'Tyler Tested' makes it a gift from the heart. Good video man.
I really enjoy ur videos especially the blind taste test. My stove died 4 years ago. I cook with a toaster oven, electric skillet, 2 eye electric burner and air fryer. I use my air fryer more than my other appliances. I cook ever thing from hot wings to pork chopes and chicken. I heat up left overs in it. I enjoy my air fryer. I liked this blind taste test you did.
My oven broke keep getting a F90 error on it which could mean anything, but I got a Ninja Foodi 3 in 1 (?) for my birthday 2 years ago and you know what. I don't really miss the oven. The air fryer makes chicken, bratwurst, hamburger (put foil on the bottom to collect grease), corn dogs, jalapeno poppers and Salmon in it and I much prefer it over the oven. They taste better and if you brush oil on the chicken and salmon.. it's sublime. Mine also has pressure cooking and can make home made soup, rice, vegetables and mac & cheese. This invention is (In my opinion) the best culinary cooking device made. I do want to fix my oven for things like casseroles (the foodi CAN do that, it's just easier with a oven), bakes and turkey (been using a crock pot, if you do this, use grapes to keep it moist), but for the most part the foodi rules!
An air fryer is fantastic for a lot of stuff for 1-2 people. They can do a lot of things well, but it's just a small convection oven. I have found one thing the air fryer cannot do well, a baked potato... also a grilled cheese while it can be done I find I prefer the pan fried version better. If you have a larger family and need a really big air fryer... get a convection oven, they are awesome and I miss mine. Also, you can get more crunch and less sogginess on breaded things like nuggets in a regular conventional oven by cooking them on a cookie cooling rack. Of course if you plan to try this, make sure it's a metal rack without any coating. This helps tremendously.
LOL. We have the Ninja Double aifryer, and we love it. It's way faster then a oven and we make lots of food in it. Not like the first airfryers that were slow and terrirble. The only thing with airfryers is, that the airfryer cooking time on the box is not reliable at all and you have to experiment with it for the best result. Just keep the cooking thermometer at hand and let the temperature tell you when it's ready.
The fan makes it a miniature convection oven which does a few things. First of all, it crisps things up better across the board, it Cooks things faster due to the air circulation, and is a lot more energy efficient. The minor deficiencies that you found could be addressed by a higher quality air fryer, something that's true of any appliance.
I have an olive oil spritzer I use for when cooking in my air fryer. Works wonders making it extra crispy. Some things I start in the oven and then finish in the air fryer for that crunch too
Likely the best video comparison yet, BUT: How about a blind taste test using a regular oven, a toaster oven, and the air fryer? Maybe try hamburger, hot dogs, stuffed potato halves, egg rolls, and your all time favorite-dill pickles? (Places here offer deep fried pickles).
Yes, This is a miniature high end stove. It's great for people who don't have the luxury of 2000$ kitchen appliances Now if you get better air fryer, Things with racks and rotating baskets, then the difference becomes more clear. a bucket style air fryer works great for little things like fries and nuggets, but for thing that take longer to cook it tends to burn before its finished all the way through, and if you have one where grease can drip, it makes pretty good bacon and burgers
Personally I prefer my Belle tabletop pizza cooker. I cook most things in it from mozzarella sticks, pizza pockets, pot pies. Quesadillas, fried eggs, frozen sausage patties, reheats pizza like new or better, frozen pizzas and probably even more. I used my first one so much that where it bends it wore the cord out until it suddenly started sparking. I immediately unplugged it & went to order a new one. Best part is that it doesn't heat up my apartment when I use it. Best appliance I've ever bought. Only $30 too.
Oh man, if you’ve been making pizza rolls in the microwave instead of the oven you’re absolutely missing out. It’s one of those things that improve SIGNIFICANTLY when cooked in the oven. Gives it a nice crunch. It’s well worth the extra time, but yeah air fryer ones are even better
I was initially apprehensive about how well the air fryer would perform cooking for my household of seven. It seemed like it would be too small. However with a couple of after market racks it has done an excellent job. My only complaint is that it needs to be washed every time it’s used for oily or greasy foods, or anything that drips onto the bottom. With an oven things are usually cooked on a tray or sheet, which also needs to be washed but the grate at the bottom of my air fryer is formed with grooves and holes which are much harder to clean than a flat surface. I use a stiff sink brush but it’s still a lot harder to clean. As far as results cooking go the air fryer is usually superior with the exception of large roasts and a few other things that won’t otherwise fit and given that grease and oil are not retained against the bottom it’s more healthy. This does not even address the substantial energy savings from the smaller cooking containment and need for cooling due to heating the indoor environment. The same goes for induction cooktops. I’m remodeling my kitchen and the next range will have a combination induction/resistive cooktop and convection/conventional oven.
an air fryer could be classified as a convention oven, but a super simplified version of a standard convection oven. Most ovens in houses or apartments are not convection ovens because they are considerably more expensive, hence why the traditional stove is still used so often.
The air fryer is essentially a college students best friend. Had one for my last year of college and used it to air fry chicken patties for sandwiches and its so crunchy and perfect. Hearing the dino nuggets crunch was how my chicken patties sounded. Also was fun using it to make a cheapo pizza using bread and sauce and cheese.
Nice video 👍 I've had a air fryer for 2 years (present) and have never used it . It's just to small. If I use it to cook the fries but have to put the fish in the oven what's the point?
Just a thought but with the chicken tenders maybe you should of cooked them just a little bit longer in the air fryer? The bigger or more you place in the air fryer the longer it takes to cook. If you are thinking about buying an Air Fryer why not look at this one? It cost more than just an Air Fryer but it does so much more than air fry. Then with this Misto Brushed Aluminum Oil Sprayer also at Amazon you can lightly spray your favorite oil on what you are cooking for deep fried like crisp. Great review.
It’s a mini convection oven. So comparing to a conventional oven is so-so. I’d love to see a comparison between a convection oven and a air fryer, I think the latter has even greater air circulation and cooks faster.
I love Air Fryers so much!!! So far, I've bought 4. Used 2 of them to death and just threw one out with another one close behind. My new favorite Air Fryer is my Drew Barrymore model. Great Air Fryer. Air Fryers cool faster with less mess and you get really crispy results you just don't get in an oven. Btw, an Air Fryer is a mini convection oven. It uses very hot air to circulate around the food cooking it much better, and, did I mention faster? Re-heating Pizza takes 3 1/2 minutes and the left over pizza taste like it was just baked! Not even kidding. It's that amazing. There are reasons why people all over have been ranting about how awesome Air Fryers are.
loved the video. i think the chicken strip one may have just been an anomaly in the breading. i love my air fryer, but for anything with toppings, like your pizza, i typically preheat mine, and then give the item a couple minutes in it without being on so the cheese will start to melt and your toppings dont go flying everywhere. i'm sure as the industry advances, you'll be able to buy one that just has a pizza button on it or something so that the fan starts out slower in the beginning so that stuff doesn't happen though.
While they are very similar yes, the hype around air fryers have basically turned your oven into the package of a microwave. So you can have oven quality food with the ease of using a microwave. It cooks quicker than an oven (if you have a good one) and greasy foods drip into the bottom so they're "healthier" (don't really like using that word when talking about unhealthy things). Also, you dont have to heat up a huge oven compartment so it uses less electricity to. Not to mention you dont have to preheat an air fryer.
this video is getting a bit old now but i had to comment. no surprise that when one of the main selling points of an air fryer is the extra crispiness it ends up winning in that category almost every time. it also is WAY faster because not only is the cook time lower but you don't have to wait for preheating. they are also cheap. air fryers are awesome. but anyway i had to mention, REHEATING leftover pizza in an air fryer is the way to go. something about it just makes it the closest to when it was delivered. just hard to cram it in there if you have a large slice or multiple slices. i also love throwing the cheap frozen pizzas in the air fryer - they come out AMAZING - but i have to break them in pieces before putting them it. worth it
Tyler, your not wrong. An air frier is simply a small CONVECTION oven. My oven's are full sized electric ovens and are all convection. They just have a fan in them to circulate air, and they combine the good parts of both air friers and non convection ovens.
Hey Tyler, if you are reading this, as a spin-off to your leaving things in jars. You could do a series where you bury things outside for 30 days. Dig them up and see what they look like. Just a thought!
I think mostly it is for things like dorms where they might have room for a microwave and mini fridge. It is like a microwave, but cooks like an oven... and likely faster than a toaster oven. You can like crisp them more in the over by turning on the broiler for the last minute. I rarely follow the baking instructions. The big thing is that it is FAR better than a microwave.
Oh no, i thought you will show cooking in air fryer, turned out its just blind test... I expect to watch you cooking in both air fryer and oven, that's so exciting, even though it will be long duration, i dont care i still will watch it.

the question I have is what kind of oven do you have ? do you have a convection oven or a regular oven that makes a big difference, I have a new convention oven would this air fryer be worth it or does a convention oven do the same?
The extra crunch is because the air fryer has a built in grease trap and the food is allowed to crisp all the way around. If you just put food in the oven on a flat sheet then the bottom will hold all the grease and moisture. It wasn’t a fair comparison. You should have put an oven safe wire rack on the sheet to prop up the food and then bake it in the oven. Chances are they would have been indistinguishable.

Facts and it’s easy to clean I also appreciate that
Yeah
Funny, the crispy factor is why I hype it.
I like the extra crunch, but the added bonus was that it the air fryer heats up in 3 min & it cools down quickly. Not changing the temperature of the whole house in the process.
Important question for this comparison:
Are you using a conventional oven or a convection oven? It will make. Huge difference for the items you tested on.
An air fryer is a convection oven. In australia we have fan forced bake and fan forced grill. same concept as the air fryer, it's just built into the oven.
If I had to guess he probably has a conventional oven
@@greatleader4841 and that was my point of asking. I have a convection oven and have been telling friends and family that the air friers are essentially mini convection ovens.
@@Mustang8867 They really are though...We also usually have a grill for fish like japan does attached to our ovens.
Do chicken wings, they're a lot healthier than being fried and the crisp is awesome. No breading needed. Just salt, paprika and pepper.
That sounds good. And healthy!
Was just about to say this, thumbs up his comment boys!
Or just use a convection oven or a conventional oven. 🤷
With pickles on the side, of course!!
@@xNecromancerxxx ewww, no pickles
Rofl, well... I, like you, have been told by numerous friends to get an air fryer, and I've had no desire because my oven works perfectly fine. You, though, have just sold me on the advantages of the air fryer without even showing how to use one. You're good lol. Looks like you stayed up all night to bring us this video ;)
I just got my first one a couple years ago. Thankfully they’re easy to use and clean, so don’t worry there!
When you can hear the crunch from the bite, you don't even have to be looking to tell its from the air fryer.
This helped a lot to make me choose if i need an air fryer or not.
Dang, an actually very useful and informative video --props to you Tyler!
When its hot, i love using my Airfryer cause the oven gives off so much heat where as the AF doesn't
Now do the air fryer vs deep fryer!
I'm so glad you did this because I have wanted to do the same experiment. Love the vids Tyler.
Dino nuggs aren’t bad when you find the kind you like, personally I love Tysons Dino nuggs but I hate any other brands
tyson dino nugs are legoit
tysons dino nuggs slap but its original nuggs suck

They are better when they’re not gluten free…
Depends on the sauce too yall
Today we learn what Tyler has on hand at all times in his fridge.
If you add 15% more cook time for bigger items, that deficit would dissappear. But the point was made very well. Those air fryers make great Christmas presents and being 'Tyler Tested' makes it a gift from the heart. Good video man.
I clicked as fast as I could when I saw the title
I clicked as fast as i could when i saw it was tyler tube
Man me too
Yup me too especially after no video on Wednesday
Cringe
@Trey Azagthoth then don't reply to the comment 🙄
I really enjoy ur videos especially the blind taste test. My stove died 4 years ago. I cook with a toaster oven, electric skillet, 2 eye electric burner and air fryer. I use my air fryer more than my other appliances. I cook ever thing from hot wings to pork chopes and chicken. I heat up left overs in it. I enjoy my air fryer. I liked this blind taste test you did.
Air fry a raw egg or a piece of Kraft American “cheese”, they both turn into fluffy pillows
Brb about to cook all these Items the same way just for the eating factor!!!! Great video
NEVER take advice from a 5 year old. Dude was trying to hard to get the oven wins. He cant even eat basic stuff.
I’m really impressed with your solution to doing a blind testing by your self.
This channel gonna blow up with this kind of consistency. really enjoy this content
how baked is tyler during this? lmao
It's great for people who don't have the luxury of 2000$ kitchen appliances
Now if you get better air fryer, Things with racks and rotating baskets, then the difference becomes more clear. a bucket style air fryer works great for little things like fries and nuggets, but for thing that take longer to cook it tends to burn before its finished all the way through, and if you have one where grease can drip, it makes pretty good bacon and burgers
Bro his videos are amazing
Oh man, if you’ve been making pizza rolls in the microwave instead of the oven you’re absolutely missing out. It’s one of those things that improve SIGNIFICANTLY when cooked in the oven. Gives it a nice crunch. It’s well worth the extra time, but yeah air fryer ones are even better
hes doing the same things as gmm on a smaller scale with better laughs. respect
1:20 that face shows how ready you are for this food😂😂
Tyler was fkn blasted while making this Lmaoo. Great vid as usual
an air fryer could be classified as a convention oven, but a super simplified version of a standard convection oven. Most ovens in houses or apartments are not convection ovens because they are considerably more expensive, hence why the traditional stove is still used so often.
When you can’t decide what to eat so you eat a little bit of everything
this guy releases videos i searched before and never found legend
The air fryer is essentially a college students best friend. Had one for my last year of college and used it to air fry chicken patties for sandwiches and its so crunchy and perfect. Hearing the dino nuggets crunch was how my chicken patties sounded. Also was fun using it to make a cheapo pizza using bread and sauce and cheese.
Nice video 👍
I've had a air fryer for 2 years (present) and have never used it . It's just to small. If I use it to cook the fries but have to put the fish in the oven what's the point?
I absolutely love my air fryer and i learned how to make a perfect steak in it..the steak comes out so tender and juicy…such a great invention!
Air friers sear the outside so much better than expected haha
Just a thought but with the chicken tenders maybe you should of cooked them just a little bit longer in the air fryer? The bigger or more you place in the air fryer the longer it takes to cook.
If you are thinking about buying an Air Fryer why not look at this one? It cost more than just an Air Fryer but it does so much more than air fry.
Ninja FD401 Foodi 8-Quart 9-in-1 Deluxe XL Pressure Cooker, Broil, Dehydrate, Slow Cook, Air Fryer, and More. Find it at Amazon. I use mine and I love it.
11:15 - The Captain America of testing food.
Love my air fryer. Be careful when cooking onion rings though. There is a very narrow window between perfect and burnt.
loved the video. i think the chicken strip one may have just been an anomaly in the breading. i love my air fryer, but for anything with toppings, like your pizza, i typically preheat mine, and then give the item a couple minutes in it without being on so the cheese will start to melt and your toppings dont go flying everywhere. i'm sure as the industry advances, you'll be able to buy one that just has a pizza button on it or something so that the fan starts out slower in the beginning so that stuff doesn't happen though.
Tyler's becoming my favourite reviewer and tester
They just have a fan in them to circulate air, and they combine the good parts of both air friers and non convection ovens.
tyler: I will link the air frier in the discription
also tyler: haha, sike
Hey Tyler, if you are reading this, as a spin-off to your leaving things in jars. You could do a series where you bury things outside for 30 days. Dig them up and see what they look like. Just a thought!
I was just looking for your new episode I’m so excited
It's Saturday. And it's 5 pm EDT. Where's the new video?
I think mostly it is for things like dorms where they might have room for a microwave and mini fridge. It is like a microwave, but cooks like an oven... and likely faster than a toaster oven. You can like crisp them more in the over by turning on the broiler for the last minute. I rarely follow the baking instructions. The big thing is that it is FAR better than a microwave.
I have a microwave/air fryer and a stand alone air fryer. I very very rarely use my oven.
Oh no, i thought you will show cooking in air fryer, turned out its just blind test... I expect to watch you cooking in both air fryer and oven, that's so exciting, even though it will be long duration, i dont care i still will watch it.
Shoutout to the loud cricket in the back
Everyone says he’s copying Project Farm…honestly Tyler is far superior because he is open and has a sense of humour. PF is only good for information about stuff, Tyler is just a comedian who does crazy stuff and spits facts…plus you can relate to him a lot
the question I have is what kind of oven do you have ? do you have a convection oven or a regular oven that makes a big difference, I have a new convention oven would this air fryer be worth it or does a convention oven do the same?
The extra crunch is because the air fryer has a built in grease trap and the food is allowed to crisp all the way around. If you just put food in the oven on a flat sheet then the bottom will hold all the grease and moisture.
It wasn’t a fair comparison. You should have put an oven safe wire rack on the sheet to prop up the food and then bake it in the oven.
Chances are they would have been indistinguishable.
DUUUUUDDEEEEEEE !!!!!! Post on here already please🥺
Watching someone eat food for 16 minutes - Tyler's Cooking Channel?
Would be interesting to see the same comparison but with a convection oven to see if the smaller volume of the air fryer makes a difference.
