I am a Native Floridian, about 9 years ago, we went to Palm Beach and toured White Hall, the entire experience was very memorable. The Mansion and the Grounds are exquisite. We plan on revisiting in the near future.
I've lived in Palm Beach, WPB, and the surrounding area since 1952, and have watched the restoration of this grand house. I've visited numerous times and am always pleased to see the restoration progress, and the new areas opened. To me, the most amazing thing about Whitehall is that it was designed to be used for only two to three weeks each January. People wonder why Flagler built such an elegant house on Lake Worth instead of oceanfront, not realizing that Lake Worth at that time was crystal clear. It was the lake, not the ocean, along with the moderate weather that drew residents and visitors to Palm Beach and the City of Lake Worth. There are accounts of people who couldn't ride in small boats on the lake due to their fear of heights, and stories of fish that appeared to "fly" under the boats. I wish I could have seen that, but there are still lakes and springs in Florida with clean, clear water, and I was able to show my sons some of them that no longer exist in Palm Beach County.
I've toured many great house museums here in the U.S., and this is my favorite. The director gave a talk a while ago at another great house (Rosecliff in Newport) where he told of how the heat needed to be kept up during the summers to counteract the humidity in pre-a/c days. Even if I can't have the mansion, I'd settle for the Tiffany tea service made for Mary Lily. BTW it's 18k gold (tray is "only" silver gilt)! Excellent video.
Whitehall is one of the most beautiful old houses in the US. I love its French Parisian inspired decor. I hope it remains preserved for many future generations, who should take inspiration for interior design ideas from its finely decorated rooms.
COMMENT: Are you a native of Florida - and have you visited this building before?
