I just wanna mention that due to the fact that the gold is tossed into the "spirit realm", it is canon that Tulio and Miguel do in fact indirectly get the gold they wanted at the end BECAUSE of this decision. Think about it.
I like how Miguel was the first to suggest they stop the sacrifice and the way he caught the guy before he fell, even though Tulio is not a bad person, Miguel is the most compassionate of the two
Yeah, the aztecs did very evil demonic things, those triangle temples were used to sacrifice virgins, people, and babies to false idols.... it's very sad.
To be fair, this isn't a "native" culture. This film portrays a hodgepodge of ancient-Mesoamerican tropes, and ignores the Muisca culture where the "El Dorado" tale originated from.
Later when Tzekel Kan brought the jaguar to life, the statue of Tulio and Miguel split apart from each other. I think that symbolized the fight between Tulio and Miguel and also the fact that they almost went their separate ways forever.
Me and my husband just went on an excursion to Chicken itza and this is so accurate! The human sacrifices were drugged with fermented honey among other things to feel little too no pain, they found many human remains as well as gold in the Cenote and you can see the place where they’d Bathe them right beside the stone table where they would be sacrificed above the hole. They used an obsidian axe or knife before being tossed in. Most were 14-24 years old, but they found newborns and elderly remains as well. Super interesting and crazy to see the old crime scene in person
I can (partially) claim Maya heritage. If I were alive then, there's a decent chance I would have been a child sacrifice, if not, a young adult one. Emerging adulthood is anywhere from 18-25 years old nowadays. I'm 27. So, all things considered, I would have been dead by 24...prolly. 🤷
I love how utterly different Chief is from Tzekel-Khan. He even asks them if they're happy with the tribute and absolutely respects their wishes, unlike the priest who feels so entitled to sacrifice a innocent for no reason like if that is a sign of respect.
Tzekel-Khan is not really the bad guy. He just is doing what he's been taught to do for probably years. Tulio and Miguel are almost going everything he believes in to the point where he sees through them.
You're right, but that doesn't mean he's not a bad guy. The man was a pure sadist. It's one thing to believe and practice belief. However, when it comes to the deaths of innocents and those who were undeserving, he did not bat an eye. Even if it puts his own people in danger. You can't deny that he enjoyed sacrificing his people, and took any chance to do so as well as trying to convince Tulio and Miquel into doing so. I understand his reasons, but to accept them is to spit on those who did not deserve what he believed to be a righteous sacrifice. Not even his own people seemed responsive when the chance to sacrifice came, despite the fact they grew up in the same culture as well. And it is because of those beliefs that they did not intervene when sacrifice was "demanded."
No, he's not doing what he's been taught, at least, not as far as the sacrifice is concerned. "The beginning of a new era, the dawning of a new age, demands sacrifice". This quote, followed by the reaction of the crowd and the chief, tells us that this is new behaviour from Tzekel-Kan, considered abhorrent by the onlookers and clearly takes them by surprise. What seems to be the case, is that Tzekel-Kan has misunderstood old prophesies, misinterpreted them. "So dawns the age of the jaguar", "As it is prophesied, the age of the jaguar will be written in blood!". Tzekel-Kan seems to have read or somehow divined the prophesies relating to the new age of the jaguar they happen to be entering at this time. He seems to interpret a general forecast of a time of bloodshed, as a commandment to shed blood himself. Since we never see any prophetic texts, we don't really know how much of this 'misinterpretation' is actually Tzekel-Kan's fault. It may not be a misinterpretation at all, for all we know. All we know is that, at the same time as an age of great bloodshed is predicted, the Spanish happen to be entering the Americas...Which will lead to a time of great bloodshed.
Look I really feel sorry for a the high priest he really wants to impress them, but instead they should tell him, that sacrifices aren't what the god want, and make up a story/plan before hand and tell him what thier "fellow gods" want.
Or they could just say they mistinterpreted the texts but forgive him for his efforts maybe. But then again he did open up a portal and summon a dude so maybe he actually he's pleasing some god or another

What Miguel and Tulio did to save that guy proves that not all thieves/con men are actually bad people. They are con men but they still have morals. They dont harm people and certainly dont kill people. And seeing someone about to be sacrificed, along with the offer to sacrifice an entire team of players, is where they draw the line and have to step in. A majority of petty thieves that are arrested arent actually bad people. Many of them are going through rough times and are desperate. Do they still need to spend some time in jail? @markreyes7454 from what I read when blood was offered to the Spaniards they spat the ground and turned away in disgust which astonished the Aztecs. Apparently the Spanish style of trial and execution in turn horrified the Aztecs
Even if it would have been causes suspicion, I would have said that I´m not a god who is interested in living sacrifices as I respect life and the normal course it takes. I do wonder for what reason some cultures did these kind of tributes like for example killing a human and what made them believe it would appease the gods.
The Aztecs and Mayans believed that the universe was sustained on human blood and required human sacrifice to maintain cosmic order. Interestingly, the supreme god, Quetzacoatl, was averse to human sacrifice. Human sacrifice was practiced in many civilizations included Mesopotamia, Rome, Greece , China and among the Celts and Vikings to name a few

Ironically, the real Cortez was more like Miguel and Tulio.
What do you mean? Like based on looks?
@@markreyes7454 He took the Aztec Emperor (Montezuma II) prisoner in order to manipulate the masses and aquire wealth, then turned against the Spanish and fought Spaniard forces when they came to take his position as leader. He even had a child with a native woman.
Pitfall anyone?
LOL 3:33
Still have a crush on chel
😂
One can imagine how the Spaniards actually felt when they saw Aztec sacrifices the first time
Right? Lol. Or imagine what Tulip and Miguel would've thought if they walked in on these guys as they were pulling hearts out.

Well originally Miguel and Tulio were supposed to be a gay couple. So that might give them points with liberals.
